Gaston hadn’t crossed the threshold into Lefou’s apartment. Instead he stood stooped in the doorway, pale and stricken and stony-faced. No declaration of love had ever been uttered with such severity. 

“Yes.” he replied, and drew himself up as tall as he could go without smacking his head. It was a call to confrontation; an age-old warning not to question his authority. Gaston hadn’t used it on Lefou since their training days. It was as much a crutch as the clothes he wore– anything not to look the way he had.

Anything to not be…Garret.

There was a pause. This was new. Horribly, awfully informally new. But even Gaston could grasp his own ineptitude. If he couldn’t retain his old self, if the Enchanted Forest was as lost to them as they said, he couldn’t rely on what he’d done before. He couldn’t treat Lefou like a servant. Like something inferior. And, more importantly, he didn’t want to. 

And he could learn to say that. He could… learn to adapt. 

He owed Lefou that much. 

…He owed Jack that much, too. 

Gaston’s face softened. Suddenly he looked desperate. And confused. And very, very sorry.

“Once this door closes, it will never open again!”

“Have you really read every one of these books?”

“As a specimen, yes, I’m intimidating!”

“I never thanked you for saving my life.”

“It just occurred to me that I’m illiterate and I’ve never actually had to spell it out loud before…”

“You’ll join me for dinner. That’s not a request.”

“Oh, you are very strong! This is a great quality!”

“I want adventure in the great wide somewhere.”

“You are the wildest, most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen! Nobody deserves you…”

“It’s more than I can bear.”

“You have to help me. You have to stand.”

“Hello! Pleased to meet you! Wanna see me do a trick?”

“Come into the light.”

“Oh, I’m not a princess…”

“You’ve taken me as your prisoner, and now you want to have dinner with me? Are you insane?”

“There must be something there that wasn’t there before.”

“Do you realize what you could have done? You could have damned us all!”

“Just a little change, small to say the least.”

“I will escape, I promise!”

“How lovely to make your acquaintance!”

“When we return to the village, you will marry me.”

“Pretty eyes, proud face, perfect canvas! Yes! I will find you something worthy of a princess!”

“Are there any other tasteless demands you would like to make on my artistry?”

If Jack had gained anything from a lifetime as Garret’s emotional punching bag it was this: he knew Officer Herne extremely well. 

Garret paused. 

“Ruby?”

Something in Garret’s face seemed to flicker. It was a snap-shot expression– sandwiched somewhere between suspicion and greed–there and gone in an instant. It was brief and simple, but for just a second Garret had been surprised.

Then ego rushed in to fill the void. No part of Garret could ever let himself be taken aback, let alone unsure. The world hastily reshaped itself back into a place where Garret was Central Focus; where he’d already planned everything out, where he would always win. His lip curled triumphantly. 

“Of course she did! No girl says no for long!”

Garret leaned back in, a captive audience, his thumbs digging deep into the sides of Jack’s shoulders. Imminent suffering was no longer on the cards, but Jack wouldn’t be hurrying away just yet– for one brief, horrible moment he’d made a friend. 

“What did she say?”

He’d managed to distract the idiot for now-- but a distraction would only do so much. He had to think on his feet, figure something out-- least he once more earn the ire of Garret. If anything, he’d learned how to be a somewhat convincing liar through his day-to-day torment at the hands of the blowhard.

“I-I don’t know if I should say. She-- she shared it in confidence but--” Swallowing thickly, he prepared to lie through his teeth. “We were talking about you and she-- she was asking if you work out a lot to keep up your-- you know-- musculature.”

He winced at the touch-- the firm grip upon his shoulder. From anyone else it might seem friendly-- but from Garret it was naught more than a veiled threat.
