Charlie Kelly - Monster by Meg&Dia - Asymptomatic Trauma
TW: In depth study of Charlie and his trauma. This includes major themes of child abuse, sexual abuse, sexual harassment/assault and mental health spiral.

Charlie means the world to me as one of the most brutally realistic depictions of being a victim of trauma and abuse. A lot of Charlie’s actions and major quirks are through his upbringing and what happened to him.
From the first season episodes, in “Charlie Gets Molested”, where it all ends up becoming a comedic spiral of misunderstanding madness; what stood out to me the most is how Charlie says he’s gonna lock himself and get drunk and cry for the remainder of the day. Throughout the episode, he’s incredibly uncomfortable with the subject matter and how he has to tell off the twins to drop the fake case. Back when the episode aired, this could have been read as the obvious that Charlie didn’t wanna get into hot water and pin an innocent man. But knowing what we know now in the series, the false claim was forcing Charlie to face up to his own buried trauma in the form of a lie.
Later in the seasons, it’s confirmed that Charlie is the victim of sexual abuse from his uncle, told through a schadenfreude dark humor way. The Gang acknowledges it, Uncle Jack disguises it, but Charlie remains in an upsetting split between acknowledgement of awareness and denial. His denial that The Nightman Comenth is a representation of his abuse, Charlie rejecting to The Gang that he was abused, and seeing his own trauma as an abnormal awakening of puberty. However, his same character would go on to bat off Uncle Jack through removing his hands off him and saying how his actions are not appropriate or how he makes them out to be. This is Charlie aware of his abuse and not wanting repeat offenses from his Uncle.
Charlie is amazingly written as an abuse victim, aware of his abuse but downplaying it, going as far as denying it was even abuse.

A lot of Charlie’s abuse symptoms went unnoticed, going on to devolve into irregular symptoms that may seem irrelevant to his trauma. It’s in my personal belief that Charlie’s projection of his abuse relies heavily on his treatment of Waitress.
His persistence beginning as asking repeatedly for her to go out with him, constantly trying to get her to break her boundaries for him. He doesn’t accept her rejections, attempting to still get with her through lounging in her work space, forcing himself within her area that she cannot escape because of her job. This lack of consent is shown through his treatment of his infatuation with her, and as his obsession grows, his treatment becomes more brutal. He goes from staying within her areas of work to her personal spaces, getting her fired from her position and trying to keep her over at his space, following her home, going on to stalk her location and hiring investigators to follow for him. As much as people don’t like to admit, Charlie is sexually harassing Waitress. This is sex pest behavior, even if sex is not the major goal for Charlie.
Charlie’s view on consent is directly warped through his trauma. Being abused and forced and his trauma with no adult figure to correct his behavior, Charlie has a corrupt view of love and how it’s presented. This is NOT to say that Charlie is clouded or innocent by his trauma. Charlie is aware of Waitress rejection, understands her pain once he attempts to lead her back in through ruining her way of life by looking like he’s the one moving on, and is told repeatedly how Waitress does not reciprocate and wants to be away from him. Yet, Charlie still continues because of his own internalized issues from childhood. Him being violated of his consent and boundaries makes him believe that his actions are justified.
As long as he has “good intentions” then he doesn’t see the harm in what he does. And when Waitress was not what he idolized, he became bored and left her out of fear of major commitment, after all that time of breaking her boundaries.

Many more of Charlie’s traits can be explained through his trauma. His routines and systems, his quirks, even down to his emotional expressions and illiteracy.
His Mother loved him dearly, there is no denying that. But she was obviously not in a sound or safe mindset to be taking care of him, especially when the abuse was right in her own family. Without having a mom that was “all there”, his coping began early through huffing strong substances, starting on Christmas Day to escape his home situation mentally. This started at such an early age, directly linking to his childhood with Mac. In throwing rocks at hard walls to trains, doing this with his friend made him feel less alone. In sharing a cope with a friend, more would come down to spiral him further.
Huffing substances went into eating non-editable items, breaking the normality of what should and shouldn’t be done. Just to really satisfy that part of him and questions and lingers, anything but to face his own trauma. And of course, his shared space with Frank. His dependency on Frank starts as soon as he moves in, with the both of them sharing a bed with an extra room in his place being locked out. Not only does he seek out an older male figure to protect him when they sleep, but he locks away an extra space. It’s not confirmed, but to me it represents Charlie’s fear of open spaces where someone (his abuser) could come out directly near his bed, to continue the abuse. His denial that the door is the neighbors, explaining rapidly how he doesn’t like the extra space, and how uncomfortable and long it makes him. Even his inability to read could be centered to his trauma, being neglected of a true education that his home and schools failed him from.
His deep dependency of his rituals and The Gang is one that is far gone from him being able to disconnect from. Being stuck for him for so long has become apart of his being. Removing him of any of it would cause major harm on him.

Charlie speaks to many, including me, as asymptomatic abuse. The way he denies his trauma but is aware of it at the same time, his strange habits that are stuck to him like glue, and his treatment of those around him is one of the most ugliest truths of abuse victims. The major take away from Charlie is his lack of healing from any of his trauma. And as brutal as it is, some victims truly never heal.
The main gimmick of Always Sunny is you watch it to see them get worse, no matter the gag or situatuon. Charlie never truly healing of his major habits and quirks rings true to many victims and their coping mechanisms. Whether it’s to fictionalize their trauma (Nightman Musical), get hooked onto substances (his urge to huff glue), or the inability to accept your abusive actions onto others (Charlie and Waitress relationship). But we still see them evolve, especially Charlie. Although he’s no better than The Gang, only being easier to sympathize for with a majority of fans, one factor is for sure:
Charlie is a failed victim. Just seen as a bizarre creature to point at like a monster behind a cage.
One of the major attractions I feel for Charlie is bizarre nature.
Half of the series iconic moments are from Charlie! From the bulletin board madness, screaming shut up to The Gang, or his blunt love of milksteak. I love me a man that can make me laugh through his pure nature of being an absolute goof.
In between his madness comes around with creative talents that many often forget in between laughs. His natural ability to play the piano warms my heart a ton along with him having his habit of speaking gently to rats. Are we forgetting that in his fantasy scene during “The Gang Saves the Day” is him homing all those rats?!
Although very odd compared to the rest of The Gang. I can’t help but feel like he does it on purpose at times. A lot of Charlie’s actions I personally speculate have a strong connection to weaponized incompetence. The main cases being his treatment of Waitress in his fake promises, pretending to be a goof to get away with his stalking - to his dating profile madness in giving the most weirdest answers to Mac and Dennis so they can leave him alone.
A lot of fanficts often try and remove this madness within him which upsets me a tad bit, a lot actually. Keep his weirdness! It can be cute and sexy at the same time! I think it’s because it’s difficult to translate comedic elements to fanfiction? Either way, please keep his weird traits! Keep his cat food, beer drinking, and glue huffing! Keep his paint drinking and dog breath!
Cause I wouldn’t wanna love Charlie if he’s not his true maddening-self!

Funny how I made this blog to be less shy about my self insert stuff but I’m so shy to talk about Sammy. I think it’s because they’re my most vulnerable self insert (yes, even more than my Sunny insert WAAAT??? 0o0) in my worst flaws and how I write them. I put in a lot into their character and almost treat them like a separate oc, which they kinda are. But they’re also myself, ya know? :’D

Your nuggets of lore is that Travis, Bishop, and Sammy were all close friends pre-NMH 1 before Travis got involved in the UAA. After NMH 1 and before NMH 2, Travis and Sammy would fight more and Bishop was forced to play middle man, having more of a bias to Travis. After Bishop “dies”, Sammy “works” along side in hunting down info about the UAA with Henry….. evil evil man Henry….. that’s all but I have way more heheh. ;)

The way the artist drew the sketch just gives off season 1. Season 1 Charlie where he was a bit of a loose screw but also very grounded, defiantly knowing what he’s doing when flirting.
And as basic as it is, I’m sorry, I’m such a sucker for hands on the waist. I didn’t even request for that! Like all hours of the day, please keep your hand there, Charlie. ^0^
Imagine your F/O being introduced to a unique way of you showing love to them (head scratch, cheek nibbling, anything you can think of!) and that being “The Small Things You Do”.
It comes up at random but it’s one of their favorite parts of the day being with you.
It gets to a point where they become a little needy for it and ask for it. The first time they ask, they’ve just pounced onto you playfully and get close to you, holding you. But because it’s so out of the norm, it doesn’t exactly have a name. So they look down and ask “Can you do that thing?” as soon as they get comfortable.
When you ask what this thing in specific is, they still don’t wanna look up and repeat “That thing. The thing you do? Please?” They then describe it while stumbling on their words, trying to word it right. They fear that looking up, you’ll look at them in confusion that ruins the mood.
But the moment they’re done describing, you go and do that special thing for them. They automatically look back up and melt right back onto their hold of you! <3

Dooodles, doodles, doodles of all kind and any kind!
No major finished piece just yet! It’s a miracle that I have free time to even make these doodles. I’ll admit that a lot of them are obviously traced, but only because it helps me with art block. It’s not 2016 with DeviantArt cringe comps anymore thankfully so don’t be mean that I’m using bases. @-@
I can say something a little strange about the 4th doodle but I’ll keep that to myself for now. I’m keeping this positive and fluffy. But just know I’m thinking about how Charlie can be a bit strange with his systems in loving his significant others… ;’DD

There was a short trend where fangirls were drawing their fictional favorites fangirling over THEM with ita bags and merch collection and I get so giddy over thinking about that. It’s my new favorite scenario to daydream about, especially with Charlie Kelly and his very VERY obsessive behaviors. It almost plays out like affirmations to me. Essentially it goes from Charlie with an ita bag to Charlie having my exact fangirling behaviors.
Like yes, Charlie would fall in love with me after watching my source for comfort after a really bad incident.
Charlie would start to print out photos of me in private because he feels embarrassed at the thought of Frank or anyone in the gang finding out about this fictional crush.
Charlie would buy stickers and decor of my favorite color and mascots to put on the photos. He’d dig through his apartment when Frank’s not around for empty photo frames to put the photos in.
Charlie would use the unused room in his apartment as a secret shrine for me. Making sure it’s free from dust and has a couple of charms and trinkets to go along with it. (Sometimes when Frank doesnt come back to the apartment for mysterious reasons, he takes a blanket and pillow and sleeps in the room next to my shrine!)
Charlie would associate things like strawberries, poodles, bunny mascots, and the Pokémon Whimsicott with me and buy items like that just thinking how cute it’d look the next time he updates his shrine.
He’d try his hardest to keep it to himself. He manages to keep it a tight secret for years! I’m talking since 2012, where not even a single soul would know. But it eventually comes spilling out when Frank actually asks what’s behind the locked away door that’s been there for years… @_@
My friend said it best when she said the gang was gonna have to set up another intervention with him, this time being about some strange fictional character he’s obsessing over. Ahhh makes me fangirl so hard! ^_^
