Yuki laughed aloud, tempted to freak her out by kowtowing, but that might actually stop her heart. They stood, taking her hand again. They wanted to hug her, but this was probably enough affection for one day. There was always someone around watching, and there were enough rumored flying around that they were repeatedly unfaithful to their spouse with Jun without intentionally giving them more fodder.

“Don’t ever leave me, Jun,” they said seriously. “I don’t know what I’d do without you….”

Jun gave a sigh of relief and placed a hand over her ferociously beating heart as the Emprex finally rose. She didn’t even want to know what kind of rumors would if...well, hopefully if there were any peering eyes, it would just be one of the flightier serving girls, who no one would pay any mind to.

Yuki had always loved a good joke at Jun’s expense, and had a talent for ruffling her feathers, but this was going too far even for them! She was just about to give them a good tongue-lashing when they beat her to the punch, their face sobering and making her wait to listen.

“Your Majesty, I...” Jun considered her words carefully, her face going serious. “I would remain by your side even if Holy Leviathan tried to stand in my way. You don’t need to worry--not for a moment.”

Standing up, they took a step towards her. She would likely sputter at what they were about to do, but whatever. She had earned it.

They knelt in front of her, bowing their head to her. “You are the most valuable asset I have. And my best friend. As long as I live, I want you to be by my side, Jun.”

Jun swung her head around franticly, watching to make sure there were no witnesses around.

“Stand up, Your Majesty! Stand up!” She even waved her arms at them, hoping no one chose this moment to walk into the room. “Where would I even go if I wasn’t here keeping you alive?” Sweet Leviathan, a respectful kiss on the hand was one thing, but to have the Emprex on their knees before her! That was too much!

[Chocobonugget] Yuki sneaks into Jun's room. It's almost 3 in the morning, and if their parents hear them, it won't turn out well. They shake Jun's shoulder. "Jun? Jun, I need you to take me to the hospital. Don't ask why, though...."

Jun bolted upright as soon as she felt a touch. She threw off her blankets at the sight of the Heir and immediately began looking them up and down for injuries.

“What happened? Are you hurt? Where?”

Yuki couldn’t help but smile at Jun. “You know,” they said, their voice a whisper, “if they didn’t know us better, people might start to make up all sorts of rumors about us.”

And if they winked at her to rub in the joke, well, who was going to stop them? He and Jun loved each other deeply, just not necessarily in the way some members of the snobby aristocracy might have thought. “I can hear it now: ‘You’re getting very intimate with the Young Heir, Morimoto’.”

“I’ve already heard it,” Jun laughed. “The rumor mill of the nobility runs amazingly well, even without fuel.” Rumors of romantic trysts were, after all, an ancient, traditional expression of jealousy among the oldest Wutaian families. Jun had been by the Young Heir’s side since they could hardly walk, after all, in a move many called “more of that Moritmoto brown-nosing to the Imperial family.”

Jun didn’t mind being the subject of whispers, so long as nothing believable began circulating. Her family had long been supportive of the Kisaragi, but even they wouldn’t hesitate to push to get one of their own into the Imperial family if they thought there was an opening. Jun wasn’t sure she wanted to be in the middle of that particular game of chess. Not when so many people she loved would be playing as the pieces.

“Most people, however, know the difference between truth and rumor, even they pretend they don’t.” She winked in return.

Empress Yuffie was, after, a famous wild child in her youth, (and, truth be told, in her adulthood as well). Yet she was one of the finest rulers Wutai had seen in generations.
