` * â retrospect
feykijungâ:
kijung wonders if hyunwoo has grown kinder, or his own memory of him was smudged by the hands of grief. his presence is warm the way donghyunâs is bright, and he thinks, if theyâre to be a bonded pair, that theyâll suit each other well. perhaps foolishly, kijung hopes he can remain in contact with them both this time. he still hesitates to call it friendship, and there is danger in surrounding yourself with people you donât want to lose if youâre an immortal, butâŚwell, heâll think about it.
âare you happier?â kijung asks, figuring it only fair that he poses his own question after answering hyunwooâs. he isnât sure if hyunwoo looks happier, but maybe. he doesnât look like heâs suffering, at least, and sometimes, after seeing and experiencing as much as they have, itâs all you can ask.
these are questions kijung can appreciate, somehow easier to answer than how have you been? and more sincere tooâ harder to lie in response to. kijung has an inkling that even with all the time that passed between them, theyâll still speak the truth with one another, and itâsâŚnice, despite kijungâs previous reservations.
maybe itâs nice because hyunwoo doesnât ask more questions. thereâs no suspicion, or inquiry about how kyuhwan was turnedâ no request for further details at all, and while kijung wouldnât mind (carefully) speaking about his best friend, it comes as a relief. family. âyes,â he replies. thatâs what mei and kyuhwan are to him. a mother, and now an eternal best friend and brother. âiâm glad too.â some vampires donât have anymore. kijung always pities them, because he is far more lucky.
the question catches him off guard â itâs something he hadnât expected and yet should have expected, all at the same time. the question is one that he hasnât really considered before. not in the time frame that they had known each other. of course, hyunwoo has suffered loss too, but he doesnât believe it came around until long after the last time theyâd met each other. heâd lost minsoo, but that had been relatively recent in the long stretches of his memory. and heâd found minsoo again, years later, which had been a blessing heâd never thought heâd be lucky enough to receive.Â
but is he happier? is he happier than the last time they had met? hyunwoo doesnât think he can answer that question. the thing is, his time with haneul had been some of the most precious times in his life. she had been warm and kind, and had taught him a considerable amount of patience. as a child, he had always tended towards the more impulsive side, and that had changed as time passed and he grew up. with haneul, he had learned about strength, patience, kindness, and love. he wishes their lives could have been easier, but he doesnât think that they suffered unduly.Â
the times had been hard, that was all. after a long pause, where he had carefully considered his words, he finally says, âi donât know if iâm happier now than i was before.â his voice is soft and contemplative. âi donât think i was particularly unhappy back then... life could have been easier, but i think i was still happy, then.âÂ
he doesnât need to know the specifics of kijungâs life. itâs enough for him to know that the other is happier now, because the sadness in kijungâs eyes had always made hyunwoo ache inside. âyou deserve this happiness, this family,â he tells the other, even though heâs sure that kijung already knows.
