All her life, she’d ignored the counter that ticked down. Lower and lower. Soulmates were just hoaxes, weren’t they? She never really did believe in such a thing, no matter how caught up in it her mother and cousins were. Her aunt was the only one who had ever come out and said that it was a hoax.. but maybe that was because the man she had thought to be her soulmate ran out on her with their twin daughters.
Pearl was orphaned not even eight years later and rescued by a man who worked in the law offices. She was raised by him and taught many things during her life there. Essential life lessons, as he called it.
The counter continued to tick down and Pearl never even though anything of it. It was just numbers. Not everyone had a soul mate, did they?

She glanced at her wrist, staring in disbelief at the numbers. Why were they so low at this time of year? It was only two weeks past New Years.. there wasn’t one who looked that special around here, was it? No.. just ordinary faces passing the spirit medium by.

Lower and lower, it continued and Pearl gave the counter a glare. It had to choose today of all days to say that her soul mate was coming? If one even existed. Giving an exasperated sigh, the spirit medium sat herself down on one of the bus benches deciding to take the bus to the courtrooms today.

Twenty-one more seconds. The bus was clearly in view. Would it restart if she left the area? Or would it continue counting down? Getting up and producing a bus pass, Pearl awaited boarding just as the counter finally hit the last number.

..Her soul mate was here.
Yui barely paid attention to her timer. She was too scared to meet her soulmate. What would it be like? Meeting someone that I will be destined to be with. She was on her way to the bus stop.. She checked her wrist once. 00:00:21… My soul mate is coming… She reached the bus stop and noticed the bus was already there. Yui quickly produced a bus pass and noticed her timer was 00:00:00. There was one other person waiting for the bus.
"Um.. Excuse me? Is your timer stopped?"
The question was what ticked Pearl off, no matter how much people seemed to enjoy waiting to get their soulmate. She looked at the girl who asked the question and raised her arm, showing the 00:00:00 on it but put her arm down just as quickly.
"Yeah. But it's not like a soul mate is going to drop by. You have to work for these things.." Work.. that's all she really knew, anyhow.. As a spirit medium and her other job..
"...Why did you ask?"
Even though the man had made her mood go down a bit, it soon rose as the decisive evidence was shown. The defence was shocked at this, however they tried to turn it in their favour. Pearl gave a slight giggle. That evidence.. it had been picked up not a few moments into the investigation, right?
Pearl silently cheered the prosecution on, wincing as the gavel was slammed to quiet the court down some as everyone had gotten into a fuss about it. Concerned, Pearl had to look over the edge yet again.
This was turning out to be good…
The gavel rang out and the judge waited for the defense to give a good enough explanation, lest they get penalized. However, it was obvious that they were scrounging. They had an idea, that was obvious, but they lacked something…the conviction.
The judge looked ready to give a verdict at any minute, but something still wasn’t quite resolved yet. The entirety of the court room held their breath: it was going to end here, unless someone yelled out that famous word soon. The truth was almost out.
The defence seemed to be at a loss. They had something, didn't they? Pearl thought for a minute, as the evidence the prosecution had seemed really solid enough to get this guy his verdict. Or, that's how it seemed to Pearl. No one could really understand what went through a defence attorney's mind.. not even her.
She waited a bit before giving a sigh and sitting back down, pulling her knees up to her chest as she waited for the sign that court was over. The verdict was going to be passed soon, wasn't it? And, even then, would it be enough?
..It was crazy how she started thinking this way near the end of the trial.

{I'm sorry I haven't been on. I've been having a difficult time managing the other blogs I have... I've joined a few groups and made some characters for friends and all but forgot about Pearly...
I'll dedicate the rest of this week to Pearly. After today. Until next Friday. As much as I can.

The trial continued as much as it could with Pearl silently cheering and wincing at certain points. She was so happy to see all of this going on that it really cheered her up some, as she was still kind of upset from earlier.
Kila seemed hard at work and the prosecutor and the defence attorney trading blows and objections. Sometimes one of the objections was so great that the Judge had to slam the gavel to get everyone to settle down.
"I hear he was forging evidence again.." Someone whispered, which got Pearl to stomp on their foot to silence them. The resulting yelp was satisfactory. She knew that the prosecution wouldn’t sink that low.. not any more, right?
”..Hmmph.” She frowned and leaned over again to get a better look.
The judge yelled and banged his gavel for silence, causing the afflicted person to wince. Kila once again resisted the urge to laugh for fear of being scolded by the judge as well.
It really was a bit up and down, but the prosecution supposedly had decisive evidence up their sleeve. That was the best part, in Kila’s opinion, when the game-changing piece finally came into play and it was make-it-or-break-it. It was also the part where she had to be extra careful; if she missed something, then there’d be some bad consequences. Being the court recorder, she had to remain neutral, but part of her wanted the prosecution to win, if only for the expectant girl in the audience.

"What?" Pearl shook her head. "I’m fine, Mystic Maya! Well! There’s nothing wrong!"
It was at this point that she was starting to have to wipe her eyes every so often. “..My allergies are acting up.”
"Pearly! I know that’s not your allergies! You’re going to tell me what’s up or I’m going to unlock it myself!"
She knelt to the younger’s height and dried her tears, her voice softer, “Hey, I’m right here ok? I’ll always been here for you.”
She shook her head at that and bit the inside of her cheek. How would Maya unlock it if she didn't hold enough to actually get through?
"...I know, Mystic Maya.. I know.." She hoped this wasn't a big dream.. otherwise, when she woke up, she'd be even sadder than before.

"I can hear you clearly.. I'm right here, you know. I just wanna--"

I can see ghosts.. (M!A Starter)
She hid under a desk, shivering lightly. For a Spirit Medium, she was certainly afraid of the harmless ghost trying to talk to her.
"Hey! I'm trying to talk to you here. Quit running off!" He said, moving over to the little girl and looking under the desk for her. Unfortunately for the ghost, Pearl had become extremely frightened.
"MR. EDGEWORTHHHH, GHOSTS ARE HAUNTING YOUR OFFICE!!!" She screamed, even though he had gone out for a moment to talk to Detective Gumshoe. Pearl scrambled out from under the desk to the door, frantically opening it and running outside.
"...She's terrified for some reason." The ghost murmured as he followed her without a second thought. How dumb.. This girl was a supposed spirit medium and yet she was acting like a little scaredy-cat when he was trying to talk to her. No matter..
The ghost followed her out of the office, even though she was currently hiding behind the sofa and hoping that the ghost wasn't around.
M!A time! Pearl, for however long the mun decides, you can both see and talk to ghosts. Have fun!
