The loneliest, are the kindest. The saddest, smile brightest. The most damaged, are the wisest.
Hideaway, getaway // Selfpost
Carys looked up over her forearms, her hands clasping her knees to her chest as she rocked gently. She'd lost track of the time in the cupboard with no doors or windows, but the people outside had left a long time ago. The lesson bells were the onlyĀ thingĀ that had made her open her eyes, just to make sure she was alone. Except for now.
Her hands hurt, her muscles tired from being tensed for so long. Her breathing was finally calm and steady. She hadn't heard anything in a while now, and although theĀ silenceĀ was comforting, and the same time it made her think why no one was there. Were they sitting there, lying in wait for her to leave the cupboard? Why her? Why now?
She felt unsteady as sheĀ stretchedĀ her knees out in front of her, her grip on the shelves to her right as she stood up. Only now did she realize how thirsty she was. The screaming had made her voice hoarse, and while her thoughts had been a million miles away her body had been struggling to recover.
Taking a few slow steps to the door, her eyes peered through the key hole. From what she could see, no one was there. No one was looking for her...
As sheĀ attemptedĀ to lift the latch off the door the muffled sounds of someone strolling down the corridor made her jump. She fell the the floor, biting the inside of her lip as her breathing became sharp and shallow. Her whole body was shaking, but she tried to make as little noise as possible so that they wouldn't know where to look.
"Carys? Carys!"Ā She knew his voice as Max Knight, but everything she knew seemed to beĀ unraveling in front of her. He could be a trick. He could be one of them. Anyone could be one of them, messing with her head and making her trust.Ā
Her palms were sticky with sweat, his footsteps grewĀ fainterĀ as she heard him turn the corridor and leave. Cary's voice cracked as she swallowed and opened her dry lips.
āIn a Kingdom far far away where the fields were as green as the leaves of summer, where the waters are as clear as crystal. There lived a young Witch princess who was called Carys."
Here was her kingdom, and no one would get though that door if she didn't want them there. Not the voices, not the screams, not the thoughts of being mad. Here in her kingdom, she was safe. Here in her kingdom she could hide, and no one would miss her.
Flying lessons - Carys and James
āWell, have you seen the pictures of Merlin?ā James pretended to cringe, nudging her slightly with his elbow. āHorrendous wrinkles. Heād glad to have you represent him.ā There wasnāt very many ridiculous things that James hadnāt done - half of being a prankster, or the James Potter kind, was not minding being ridiculous. āDonāt say I didnāt warn you when you want to claw your chin off. But if youāre set on it, I can give you the spell.ā With two of them it was hard to tell if either was joking. James was genuinely willing to help her grow a beard if that was what she wanted. Heād be the consulting man of ridicule next.
There was something undeniably light about Carysā presence; James was tempted to start skipping himself. He tilted his head curiously at her stuttering. āBut itās fun! Flying is one of the best things to do. Youāre missing out!ā
She screwed up her face, pushing her chin into her neck to make a few wrinkles before saying "Like this? I want to try it! It would be an adventure!" Carys was completely serious, as always. Sarcasm was never something she actually could comprehend, but ad the talk turned back to flying she began to bite her lip with anxiety.Ā
Her step lost a bit of it's bounce, he looked so confused by her."M-mister James I don't want to fall. I'm not scared of flying, but falling... No one can catch you. And you can't stop it..."
Flying lessons - Carys and James
āMothers.ā James said simply, rolling his eyes and laughing. The thought didnāt occur to him to wonder about Carysā family, her mother, whoever she was. It was too nice a day for flying for him to worry about anything else. It wasnāt that James didnāt care, but his flaw was sometimes simply not thinking. He burst out laughing at her own antics - though he was never sure if she was being serious or not - and pretended to stroke his own beard. āYouād make a very pretty Merlin, Gariad. I tried to actually grow a beard once and itās actually really itchy. Donāt grow a beard is my advice to you.ā
Smiling, because James Potter rarely refused an audience, he beckoned to her to follow. āI thought you said you liked to fly?ā He stuck out his arms to imitate wings, like from the other day when sheād talked about birds and racing and flying away.
"I do?" She shook her head, her matted hair falling back into it's overly frizzy place. It stuck up in all angles, just the way she was used to it. "You did? I'd like to try it just once, I think it would be fun. There must be a spelly thing for something like that somewhere... Then I could be a pretty Merlin all the time!"
She skipped alongside him, in her usual manner as her fingers gently drummed theĀ rhythmĀ of his tune still. She laughed as he imitated wings, but her eyes were wide as she shook her head. "I like to watch people and birdies fly, I like to think I can but I can't. I'm- Not scared but- I don't..." She was trying to find the words to explain it. Heights were her flaw in a way, because once you slipped you couldn't save yourself. And you could still see what was coming.

Burning your heart out// Self para
Pushing the blonde cascading locks off her face, Carys sat up gently and slipped her feet out from under the duvet. She couldn't remember falling asleep, she couldn't remember much truth be told.Ā SomeĀ running... Some carrying... Her eyes fell to the girl and boy asleep on the floor. That was him, Mister Max.Ā StretchingĀ her legs, she stood up and looked down at him with her headĀ tiltedĀ to one side. He looked so peacefulĀ sleepingĀ with the girl leaning on his shoulder. Carys looked to the girl,Ā rememberingĀ her as Miss Lizzie from her dorm. With each of her hands she took a corner of the duvet, gently draping it over them as she wasn't going to sleep now. Her eyes flickered to the window, almost dawn by now.
She turned to the door, taking a few steps before looking back at the people sleeping one last time. Some things were wonderful, some things were just perfect. People said things when they slept that they couldn't say when awake. Mister Max's head on leaning gently on Miss Lizzie's was enough to answer any questions.
Her eyes turned to her cut palms, looking at the deep but healed scars that were across them. She didn't remember how they had go there as she walked the corridors, taking a few turns here and there. She didn't really have a destination, she never did when wandering. If you weren't heading anywhere, then you couldn't be disappointed.
TurningĀ violently on the spot, her hair flayed out behind her as she looked around frantically. Someone had been following her. She had heard footsteps. Her arms wrapped themselves around her as she looked forwards again, but even there it was empty. She was alone.
Although she wasn't. The hairs on the back of her neck were raised, some kind of faintĀ laughterĀ seemingĀ to echo down the cold stone halls. No one was there. Yet Carys could hear them. Them.
The warm light of the dawn streamed through the window pain to her left, and all Carys saw was something else. Flames. Flames all along the wall, flames reflected onto the stone bricks, her golden hair alight with...
Running her fingers through her hair she screwed her eyes tight shut, screaming like the people she couldn't see. Her knee's buckled underneath her as she kept screaming, the light glowing red evenĀ thoughĀ her eyelids. Her scream grew fainter as she refused to breath, letting it all out, all of it, until she was almost faint from not taking a breath. From where sheĀ kneltĀ on the floor, she made her way to the wall, pushing herself up and keeping her back against it. She had to be as far away from the flames as possible, the flickering fire only she could see.Ā
She pulled the door to a broom cupboard at the end of the hall, pelting inside and covering her ears with her hands. She shut her eyes again, repeating over and over, "I'm alive. It can't hurt me. It can't hurt me if I'm safe and alive in here.".
The sounds of footsteps outside the door spooked her further, making herĀ barricadeĀ the the door in fear. She wouldn't let them in. Never. She heard faint glimmers of conversation about where the screaming was coming from, but she wasn't going to let the people find her. If they found her they wouldĀ realizeĀ she was the source of it, that inside her head was where all the voices began. They would call her mad, they would take her away. She didn't want that. Not again.

Dilemma : Max and Carys
He was careful as he healed the wounds, during his work with his father and The Sanctuary team heād found himself having to deal with more major wounds than these. Usually burns but things in some cases had been prettyĀ gruesome. He continued to murmur - nothing important just reassuring words. Heād learnt that keeping a person distracted from their injuries meant they noticed the pain less. Once he finished he let go of her hands.
Once heād gone to fetch the blanket and pillows and placed them down for her heād been careful to get her to lie down so he could wrap her in the blanket. He ended up sitting on the floor beside the sofa she was now lying on. āYouāre welcome⦠Now maybe you should sleepā¦ā He suggested with this. āIāll stay here⦠You have nothing to worry about.ā He murmured reassuringly then tilting his head back to rest against the front of the sofa arm.
Tucking herself under the blanket and bringing her knees up to her chest again, watching him from where he sat. "I can't Mister Max. I don't... I'm not scared but..." She wasn't going to admit that she didn't want to shut her eyes and feel alone again. Instead she pulled the blanket up to below her chin. He seemed as tired as she felt after carrying her all the way up here.Ā "T-tell me a story Mister Max."

Dilemma : Max and Carys
He watched her quietly for a few moments after sitting her down onto the sofa his attention quickly going to her hands and as she looked around rather unnerved and frantically he lightly placed a hand on her upper arm. āHey⦠Youāre fine. Look at me. Look at Max okay? Youāre fineā¦ā He murmured trying to keep her attention on him in that moment then. There was no one else around Max had noted that fact when heād come into the room.
He let her sit up but carefully too her hand drawing his wand and removing the glass from her hand he used multipleĀ Vulnera Sanenturs to move teh blood back into her veins before he began healing the wounds over. āYouāre not mad. No youāre fine. Youāre safe here.ā He glanced at her hand once heād finished his work carefully taking the other and repeating the process. It took a while all the time he was just murmuring āYouāll be fine. Just look at me.ā Eventually once he was done he let go of her hand. āNow⦠You stay here⦠Iām going to get something. Okay?ā He got to his feet after this and immediately hurried up to his dorm before returning down with his pillows and duvet.
Walking over to where Carys was he carefully placed the pillows down beside her. āLie down. Ā ..ā He murmured carefully draping the duvet over her body with this.Ā
Carys watched as he healed her hands, her breathing heavy but evening out again. Her eyes peered up from behind her knee's,Ā staring at him. He wasĀ murmuringĀ softly, calming her. The blood disappeared, the shards of glass leaving her palms which soothed her even more, as he told her she wasn't mad. Someone believed her. Someone knew she wasn't crazy. Ā
But as he motioned to leave she hid her face yet again, her whole body tensing. She didn't want to be alone. When she was alone it all got strange...
Yet he was back in a few seconds, covering her with the warm blanket as she settled onto the sofa. The voices were gone, either that or they were so quiet she couldn't hear them. She wasn't about to question it, she was too tired. Instead she watched Max from under the covers, her head tilted. "M-Mister Max, thank you. T-Thank you."
