What does "Feuer und Flamme" mean?

“Feuer und Flamme [sein]“ is a German idiom, which literally translates to “fire and flame“. It is used when you describe somebody being very passionate (leidenschaftlich) about something.

„Ich bin Feuer und Flamme.“ – I am very passionate (about this). [lit.: I am fire and flame].

Similarly: „Ich brenne dafür.“ – I am passionate about it. [lit.: I am burning for it.]

The expression is a hendiadys, or figure of twinnes; a figure of speech meant for emphasis by turning an adjective-noun construction into a noun-conjunction-noun construction.

In the case of “Feuer und Flamme”, the adjective-noun construction would be “flammendes Feuer” (flaming fire).
