DANNY BOWIEN & JUSTIN HAGER Q&AĀ
This was a verbal conversation between Simlah āShimmyā, Danny and Justin on April 5th, 2021 at Mission Chinese in Brooklyn, NY. The recording was transcribed into the Q&A below. I hope you enjoy!Ā
Transcription and Photography by Simlah HenryĀ
Pick a color.
J: GreenĀ
D: Iām gonna go with⦠like a blueish black. Blue-black.Ā
1.š„WHAT DID YOU EAT LAST NIGHT?
D: I had delivery. It was Vietnamese food from this spot close to my old place. It was okay I havenāt had pho delivered in over a year *laughs*. I had a good day of eating yesterday, me and Mino woke up and went to this Korean spot itās open 24 hours called āGammeoakā. We did this bone broth soup and the kimchi is phenomenal. They only have one type itās crazy.Ā
J: I had a random meal. I had a salad, mac n cheese, and banana bread. It was really good.Ā
D: OH! THATāS A 3 COURSE MEAL!Ā
J: *laughs* Thatās how we eat, we just think about it on the spot. Ā
2.š„WHEN YOU WASH YOUR HAIR AND CLOSE YOUR EYES, WHAT DO YOU USUALLY THINK ABOUT?
D: Honestly. Weirdly, a lot of time when Iām washing my hair I think about food *laughs* or like recipes sometimes. Like when Iām exercising I think about the potential of a new dish or something weāve been trying to figure out and put together. You probably hear it a lot from people, āI get the best breakthroughs when youāre showeringā *laughs* thatās me.Ā
J: A lot of ideas come to me in the shower but when Iām washing my hair Iām bummed cause itās gonna look really stupid after I wash it *laughs*. I wash it once a week but when itās time I donāt wanna mess it up.
D: He wants scene hair.
J: *laughs* Exactly.Ā
3.š„SOUP OR SALADĀ
J: Soup. *giggles*
D: That is an amazing restaurant *laughs* ! Do you remember that restaurant? Souper Salad is a humongous southern salad bar, itās really good itās like S-O-U-P-E-R salad. But honestly, I like my salad in my soup. I know it sounds gnarly but when you eat Korean food a lot of times theyāll have a lot of different greens you can put in your soup, itās really good.Ā
J : Kinda like pho with herbs.
D: Yeah! They get kinda soft, itās delicious.
4.š„ WHAT SHOE DO YOU PUT ON FIRST?Ā
J: Iām left-handed so I always do my left shoe first.
D: I do right. Probably right? Yeah, I do right it would be weird to do the other shoe.
J: Iāve done left so long itās so hard to even try the other way *laughs*.
D: Mino has been using a shoehorn lately, heās using it to learn how to tie his shoes.Ā
J: Thatās amazing! I didnāt know what a shoe horn was till like 5 years ago *laughs*!
5.š„ WHATāS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU BROUGHT ON YOUR OWN AS A KID?
D: I remember getting arrested at a Walmart for stealing *laughs*!
J: WHAT!?
D: Not arrested but they grabbed me and called my dad it was the most embarrassing thing! I tried stealing 3 CDs, it was really embarrassing! Lemme think⦠it was this band āBlessid Union of Soulsā and I wanna say it was the āCandle Boxā album cause my parents were super christian so I couldnāt get like explicit music an-
S: THATāS WHY YOU WENT TO WALMART!
D: *laughing* Yes thatās why I went to Walmart.
J: OHHHHHH.
D: I think the other one was Mariah Carrey I-
J: WOW! *laughing* Thatās amazing.
D: Yeah! It was Blessid Union of Souls, Candle Box, and a Mariah Carey album. I tried stuffing them in my pants and Iām walking through the Walmart parking lot and these 2 dudes tackled me to the ground forcing their hands down my pants-
Us: NO!!
D: Yeah. They called my dad it was pretty funny all he said was āItās fineā. *laughing* He was like ādonāt steal from Walmartā.Ā
J: Yeah my first, honestly, I got two at the same time cause this song was just stuck in my head. I got Tracy Chapmanās āFast Carā and Morrisseyās āYour Arsenalā. Those were my first two.
D: I mean the first album I brought was āVan Halen Greatest Hitsā on CD thatās the first one I brought cause I got a gift certificate for Christmas to Best Buy and I got āMxpx -Life in Generalā *giggles*.Ā
J: Insane.
D: I had this little shitty, it wasnāt shitty it was an Aiwa. It was under Sony like Walkman and Aiwa was a division of Sony they had really cool logos.
6.š„ IF YOU WASNāT DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU DO?
Long pauseā¦Ā
D: I have no idea.
J: I couldnāt imagine *laughs*.Ā
D: I feel like I would be a youth pastor *laughs*.Ā
J: *laughs hard*
D: Iām joking Iām joking but I have been dressing a lot like a youth pastor lately. Iām always checking with Sara like āDo I look like a youth pastor?āĀ
J: *laughs even harder*
D: Yeah I donāt know what I would be doing.Ā
J: I think it was meant for me to be doing something creative just cause Iāve always been into weird stuff. When I was little, I used to alter my clothes, since I can remember so I just do the same thing pretty much.
D: Recently I thought about trying to be a fitness instructor like being a spin instructor.
S: With the dress shoes right?Ā
D: Yeah but with church shoes on.Ā
J: Ahhh!
7.š„ DREAM CAR, THE COLOR, AND THE SONG YOUāRE PLAYING LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP?Ā
D: Oh I know what car I want! Iām trying to get a car right now, I want a 2008 Subaru STI Hatchback, white with gold rims, or like the bronze rims. There are some good deals on that car, itās like 4 doors, theyāre fast as hell. Scar and I were talking about it, I showed Mino today and heās like āWow gold rims?!āĀ
S: What song are you playing thogh? You just paid cash, whatās the first song youāre playing?Ā
D: I donāt know. I like Drakeās āLemon Pepper Freestyleā right now *laughs*. Iāve been listening to it a lot, it is so good! Here Iāll put it on ⦠itās Drake and Rick Ross.
J: DUDE IāVE BEEN LISTENING TO A GOOD BIT OF RICK ROSS! THE BOSS ALBUM!? The cover had a chain made out of his face.
D: I feel like I would have to play DMXās āUp in Hereā.
S & J: OMG!!!
D: Fingers crossed for him.Ā
J: I hope he pulls through. My car would have to be like an old school Volkswagen square back. Itās probably my favorite car, itās probably the coolest looking car to me. Like pea-green maybe burnt orange like a vintage color. Thatās like the ultimate car! Iāve wanted that thing since I was a kid.
S: What song?Ā
D: What DMX song?
J : Oooohā¦Ā
D: āX Gon Give it to Youā? āSlippinā? Na thatās too dark.Ā
J: āSlippinā is probably the best song heās written.Ā
D: I had that album with him covered in blood in my first car. DMX was the first hip-hop artist to have 3 #1 songs back to back.Ā
S: I was just telling the homie that DMX was robbing people with his dog. I think itās genius to be honest. Like what are you going to do? Run?Ā
D: Justin, have you seen the documentary?Ā
J: No, I have to check it out.
D: Iāll send it to you, itās sooo good!!
J: Actually, āHow Itās Going Downā is the best.
S: Thatās #1 for me.
8.š„BOBBY FLAY OR GORDON RAMSAY?
D: GUY FIERI!! THATāS IT!Ā
J: *laughs hard* THATāS AMAZING!
D: Thatās it. Neither of those guys *laughs*.Ā
J: Danny Bowien!Ā
D: The guys at High Snob were trying to get me in that Clubhouse chat room. They texted me and asked me to be a guest and Iām like āYeah, sure Iām downā, then they mention āWe wanna get you in one with Guy Fieriā Iām like *gasp* āI would die! My first question would be, whatās your favorite Ben & Jerryās?ā.
J: Oooo thatās good⦠Wow
9.š„FAVORITE JUNK FOOD?
D: I donāt know. Define junk foodā¦
J: Yeah.
D: Iāll go lowā¦
J: *laughs hard*
D: Beause I donāt wanna offend anyoneās foodā¦Ā You mean whatās food so delicious I would eat it out of the trash?Ā
J: *quickly responds* McDonaldās hash browns.
D: *laughs* OKAY, whatās the number one fast-food hash brown?
J: McDonaldās.Ā
D: McDonald!!! I agree, but this place āHardeeāsā used to do those potato triangles. My mom use to call them potato triangles, it was hash brown. Obviously McDonaldās has the superior hash brown.
J: Absolutely.Ā
D: Then Carls Jrās- WAIT ARBYās HAD THE POTATO TRIANGLES! Why does everyone shit on Arbyās so hard? *laughs* I like Arbyās!Ā
Do you like Arby? *asking SaraĀ
The curly fries, the Arby Q sauce, and horsey sauce!Ā
10.Ā š„ WHAT ARE THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY?Ā
D: *vulnerably* Can I tell people that?
J: *laughs hard*
D : Iāll tell you Shimmy I trust you *laughs*.Ā
J: 6969
D: 6666
