Evolution of the Hollow Crown design

Randomly had the idea to draw a rampant brown hyena inspired by heraldic crest design destroying a crown and later thought of the phrase “ghosts do not fear the weight of hollow crowns” to add to it.

I’ve often seen brown hyenas nicknamed as ghosts so initially this was just referencing the hyena in the design but obviously could extend to whoever relates to this message, kind of meaning that one shouldn’t pay heed to those who presume themselves more worthy of respect without earning it and with arrogance for undue attention and praise because the fame and reputation built upon such a feeble foundation is indeed hollow and the weight it carries is superficial.

The initial sketch was super rough because I just wanted to get a really loose idea down before I forgot, originally I planned to go with something more like traditional heraldry styles but it didn’t look right, I wanted something with more raw energy so the looser more brush stroke inspired design happened.

I often use hourglasses and lanterns as imagery to show impermanence or even supernatural themes and used them in this to reflect the transience of reputations built upon shallow and arrogant egos.
