My favorite character type is the fiercely loyal group bruiser with the insanely sketchy past whose evil ex-boss is homoerotically obsessed with them and wants to drag them back to their old life, but the only thing that would make them even think of it would be protecting their new friends who saved them from that life in the first place (especially if the friends have no idea how bad they really were before they all became friends)

Actually I think about Sam and the treatment IYS wouldn't pay for a lot. I think about the different ways that Maggie and Nate dealt with their grief. Of course Sam's death is completely preventable in Nate's brain. It had to be IYS's fault, because if it wasn't, Nate truly had no control. At least this way it was someone's fault, someone's wrongdoing, something Nate can atone for. He rationalizes and rationalizes and rationalizes and suddenly it's years down the line and he can't let Sam go because IYS killed his son. Meanwhile Maggie's had years to come to terms. Maybe the treatment would have helped, maybe it didn't. She still had to watch her son die either way. Her husband blames himself so much that she's not even there, in his memory. She has to move on, she has to figure it out, otherwise she wouldn't even have a place in her son's story.

i dont even mean this in a "they want to fuck each other" way (although many of them do and will never know it) i mean that like the fact that gay sex is even hypothetically possible between them makes it loom over their friendship like it genuinely haunts them that they could be having it. gay sex is the elephant in the room every time they attempt to be emotionally vulnerable with one another, every time they let a hug linger too long. they cannot address its existence and so there is always something in their way, preventing true connection. and that something is the gay sex. that they are not having. the elephant of gay sex
