“ she gave birth to them, ” sam agreed, though the mom title had certainly not been a title she supported these past few months. he shrugged his shoulders, “ she lives a good life. you have to understand when I met mia —- she didn’t want children, ever. we never planned for kids, obviously, we had them fairly late but… when we had elio, she was a good mom, less so when nova followed.” he paced slowly, “ we brought you in because she wanted to go back to work, understandable, but she still has an —- allowance from me, if you can call it that. she doesn’t have to work, she chooses to, which I can understand, but she works nine to five, and she doesn’t walk in those doors till —- eight sometimes. ” sam rolled his eyes, and stopped, offering holland an apologetic smile, “ sorry. this isn’t for you to be hearing.”
holland didn’t interrupt as samuel spoke. whether or not this was appropriate didn’t really seem to matter because who else was sam going to tell? it wasn’t as if holland was going to run to his wife and repeat anything that he had heard. ‘ it’s okay, ‘ he said as he leaned up against the counter. ‘ maybe...you should try talking to her before, i don’t know, deciding anything crazy. i don’t want to assume that she doesn’t care about being a moment, i don’t, but, you know what they say. kids grow up fast and maybe she doesn’t realize that before she knows it, they’re going to be grown and they aren’t going to need her anymore. ‘ he pressed his lips together, ‘ even if they kinda don’t need her now. ‘ holland didn’t want to toot his own horn or cross any lines but even holland knew that he did everything. he knew that was his job but mia barely stepped in half of the time at all. holland got the kids up and got them out the door and did everything else inbetween.
