TAPES by Miljan Suknovic
OPENING: Thursday, September 27th, 7 pm
On view until Sunday, September 30th
FB Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works by New York based artist Miljan Suknovic. On view will be a range of new works on paper and canvas in which Suknovic continues to translate color and line into luminous and flawlessly calibrated abstractions. Suknovic's technique is straightforwardâ by using a brush and masking tape he moves color around in controlled areas. Sometimes the tape has been previously painted and used to create other art works. It then returns to blank paper and creates a new original pictorial concept. Suknovic creates a spectacle of great beauty, in which the painting alternately offers resistance to the eye or pulls the viewer into glowing fields of brilliant depth.
Miljan Suknovic studied art and architecture in Belgrade, Prague, Florence (graduated 2005), Hamburg (DAAD Scholarship for Artist) and New York. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries in Italy, France, Serbia, Greece, Germany and the US. His first solo show in America was held at the Union Gallery New York in 2008. He has also created large scale mural paintings in Florence and Bologna. He currently lives and works in New York.
3 days / 3 events at FB Gallery To celebrate the impending end of FB Gallery at its current location in Tribeca, we are organizing three last events: 1. SARAVAH, Umbanda in multimedia. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 9:15pm The Saravah exhibit is an experience of fascinating Afro-Brazilian Umbanda rituals as seen by three acclaimed Brazilian photographers. The images are projected onto inflatable structures especially created for the event. Umbanda is a unique Brazilian syncretic religion born in Rio de Janeiro over a century ago. It absorbed African cults of possessions, Catholic elements, Spiritism of Allan Kardec, Indian traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Kabbalah. Mel Alexenberg in his 'Educating artists for the future' concludes, 'Umbanda reveals isomorphisms and similarities between so many cultures that it can be seen as exemplar of coexistence.' The exhibition is organized by TicĂşn Brasil/ת×ק×× ×ר××× in collaboration with FB Gallery and the Brazilian Endowment for the Arts.

NYC in Orb, a photo installation by Conceição Praun
Opening: Tuesday, September 18 @ 7pmÂ
When coming to New York for the first time last April, Conceição Praun, a photographer and filmmaker passionate about environmental issues, decided to focus her attention on NYCâs environment and document her observations through a series of original black and white photographs.
Ms. Praun is recognized internationally for her persistence in travelling the world to document the environment. Those trips and meetings have opened her eyes to various environmental issues and has contributed greatly towards Praunâs attitude of questioning the humanâs values on the 21st century.
âI would like to express just how difficult it has been for me to encourage people here in New York City to recognize the importance of their awareness to our environment. Often I have felt frustrated by the seeming lack of interest displayed by many. I have found myself to be a pioneer, touching lives with these very real issues that are crucial for our survival. I have come to recognize that the senses of the masses appear dulled and have nurtured extreme passive attitudes towards our social dilemmas that we should responsibly address. We are all part of a great family called the human race living on planet Earth. Take care of the environment -- itâs not only our collective responsibility, but is also our right to do so without obstruction. To this, I remain committed.â - Conceição Praun
About the Artist
Conceição Praun was born in Olinda, Pernambuco in the north east of Brazil. Ms. Praun developed an interest in the "camera obscura" and learned the principles of this optical device while living in London where she had her first showcase. Ms. Praun then moved to Paris where she met George Fèvre (1930-2007), a master of photo development who was an apprentice to Henri Cartier-Bresson. This relationship encouraged Ms Praunâs deep appreciation on his theory of "lâinstant dĂŠcisif". Fèvre became Ms. Praunâs mentor and exercised a great influence on her career, she promised him that she would focus on the metaphysical contrasts of black and white. Her photographs favor spontaneity over prose and composition. Praun travels the world seeking to highlight the conditions of social and environmental circumstances in order to create awareness on societyâs behaviors. âTake care of our environment -- itâs a duty which transcends cultural, socioeconomic and all kind of boundaries.â â Conceição
Video of Axel DÜrner & Phil Minton AMAZING performance at the intimate FB Gallery last night. Thanks to Kevin Reilly for filming. "Phil Minton's light cooing and imputed engagement with both the core and periphery of language blend
ed with DĂśrner's faintly audible hisses and escapes of air - a sense of leaky valves and drifting vessels. Minton's clusters of coughs, sniffs, and faint whistles, his rasps and passages of air and almost-found words were the prelude to a spellbinding silence near the close of their duet." - Geoff Winston (londonjazz.blogspot.com)

Experimental Jazz concert at FB Gallery, Sunday, Sept. 9 at 8pm: British jazz/free-improvising vocalist Phil Mintonâs only performance in New York! Minton began playing in jazz bands in the late '50s. Late his specialty became literary texts: he has sung lyrics by Daniil Kharms and Joseph Brodsky and James Joyce among others. He is perhaps best known, however, for his completely free-form work, which involves "extended techniques" that are extremely unsettling. His vocals often include the sounds of retching, burping, screaming, and gasping, as well as childlike muttering, whining, crying and humming; he also has an ability to distort his vocal cords to produce two notes at once. As an improviser, Minton has toured throughout the world, working with a great many creative musicians, including Peter BrĂśtzmann, Fred Frith, John Butcher, and Derek Bailey's Company watch: http://youtu.be/Z3PFIYka1dU read: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/phil-minton-mn0000845323 Rare appearance in US by German trumpeter Axel DĂśrner who developed one of the most unique voices in free improvisation. As an improviser, Yeh has focused on developing a personal vocabulary using violin, voice, and electronics. As a sound organizer/composer, Yeh works with all aspects available surrounding a work, aurally and physically, as elements key to the cumulative experience. He is concerned not only with the sensual aspects of sound, but the gestural qualities as well.
