The BlackRose mod is a Malaysian made mod. I purchased it from a closed list limited to Malaysians only (BlackRose Dna Mod on Facebook). 35 units made available and I was lucky enough to nab the second unit (#002). #001 was auctioned before the list was opened. Unit comes with two raffir matching drip tips and also the option for matte or polished sleeve.
I was a bit skeptical at first but when I had the mod in my hand, I was amazed by the build, finishing and attention to small details which reflects how serious and passionate the mod maker was. It’s great to see passionate mod makers in the local vape scene.
Yes, it does comes with some flaws but nothing major that turned me off. Some small scuffs on brushed area, different finishing on the battery cap, lighter engraving on the logo, raffir doesn’t fit so well at the rounded edges and some parts of the mod (slight overhang where the raffir meets the metal area). I would prefer a polished metal frame but that's just personal preference.
I’m just being nick-picky and seriously, nothing major that bothers me. Nevertheless there is still room for improvements.
Metal edges are chamfered which make it nice to hold. Firm clicky firing and wattage adjustment buttons. (Hana’s wattage adjustment buttons seems softer). Fitting of the buttons are very good including the USB charge port. I would have preferred the metal parts to be polished but that’s my personal preference. The 4 screws that holds the sleeves are flushed with the metal. The battery cap comes with a small copper screw which is used to eliminate battery rattle (Copper with fine threading to ensure proper grounding). Small groove on the cap to assist removal. I personally like the battery cap idea. This make battery changing so much easier.Â
Size wise. It’s small but solid. Feels heavy and in fact, it feels as heavy as my Hana V3 with a Sony VTC5. It is a tad small for my hands but I can live with that. I had no problems firing the unit in my hands using my thumb and pointer.
There is really nothing much to talk about the unit in terms of functionality. It functions like any other DNA 30 mods.Â
All my other attys including my Ti Steam Turbine worked perfectly with the mod. (Taifun, Kayfun, Quasar, Origen Dripper, In’ax v2 and Sat22.) I try not to sit the attys too tight or flushed on the mod to avoid scratches. You can however adjust the 510 pin to have your attys sitting perfectly flushed. Do bear in mind that the pin is reverse threaded which ensures pin always in contact when screwing in an atty. No springs here. I have never been a fan of springs.
I look forward to new sleeves for my unit and I believe the maker will be making some special and limited editions. Who knows?! Maybe a 26650Â 0r 26500 in the pipeline? Stay tuned.
Overall, I am glad I purchased the unit and I am proud to own #002. I was trying to get my hands on Zero, Champion, Wapari and etc. Well I don’t think I’ll be hunting or buying any of those because I already have a BlackRose.Â
