Did you know that modern C sections were invented by African women— centuries before they were standard elsewhere?
Midwives and surgeons living around Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria perfected the procedure hundreds of years ago. When a baby couldn’t be delivered vaginally, these healers sedated the laboring mother using large amounts of banana wine. They tied the mother to the bed for safety, sterilized a knife using heat, and made the incision, acting quickly as a team to prevent excessive blood loss or the accidental cutting of other organs. The combination of sterile, sharp equipment and sedation made the procedure surprisingly calm and comfortable for the mother.
After the baby was delivered, antiseptic tinctures and salves were used to clean the area and stitches were applied. Women rarely developed infections, shock, or excessive blood loss after a cesarean section and the most common problem reported was that it took longer for the mother’s milk to come in (an issue that was solved with friends and relatives who would nurse the baby instead).
In Uganda, C sections were normally performed by a team of male healers, but in Tanzania and DRC, they were typically done by female midwives.
The majority of women and babies survived this, and when questioned about it by European colonists in the mid-1800s, many people in Uganda and Tanzania indicated that the procedure had been performed routinely since time immemorial.
This was at a time when Europeans had only barely started to figure out that they should wash their hands before performing surgery, when nearly half of European and US women died in childbirth, and when nearly 100% of European women died if a C section was performed.
Detailed explanations of Ugandan C-sections were published globally in scholarly journals by the 1880s and helped the rest of the world learn how to save mothers and babies with minimal complications.
So if you’re one of the people who wouldn’t be alive today without a C-section, you have Ugandan surgeons and Tanzanian and Congolese midwives to thank for their contributions to medical science.

Thank you, my sisters.
Currently reading a book about the beginning of germ theory and antiseptic technique and I wish this info was in there. I’d like to know more.
Thank you 🙏🏾
All the flavor, none of the bigotry!
Side note: I always knew that chicken tasted vaguely of pickles.
Also you can recreate Chick-fil-A sauce, too:
¼ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard (optional)
2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
PSA FOR THE GAYS STILL EATING HATE CHICKEN!
All this time.

my entire life changed when my dentist told me that the only time my teeth should be touching is when i’m chewing. every single time my teeth are touching i have to separate them. and i noticed that i clench my teeth a LOT.
when your mouth is closed and your teeth are touching or held tightly together, you are unnecessarily straining muscles out of stress. the healthiest way to hold your jaw is slightly apart, where it is relaxed. THIS HELPS WITH HEADACHES
I unclenched my jaw upon reading this.

"you’re hot”
Should I be flattered? Do these words have power and influence over my self-perception? Should I be grateful for this attention? Do I like this attention? Do I want more of it? If not, what are these presumed insecurities of mine that I am projecting? Is this harmful or harmless to my long-term self-esteem? What is trying to be achieved? Am I supposed to return the compliment? Are things supposed to escalate? Is my outer appearance a good measure of my own worth? Is it how I want to be valued? If someone puts extra effort into their outfits, makeup or hair, it’s nice to be noticed. A compliment here or there is harmless…but many people have trouble deciphering when these words get toxic–when men believe their words have power and influence over the self-esteem of others, and use it as a tactic for sexual dominance, or to lure in the insecure and vulnerable into bed, or when the insecure become addicted and rely on this attention to fill a forever void that can’t be filled. Just remember, complimenting someone’s outer appearance is EASY. It takes zero effort to look at someone and make a comment based on observation. Whether you’re giving or receiving the attention, whether you have an agenda or simply want to make someone’s day, dig a little deeper. Taking the effort and care to get to know someone, and finding value in what you learned about their existence, sense of humor, wit, intelligence, emotional intelligence, contributions, skills, accomplishments, potential, character traits, etc. is flattering and promotes people to be their overall best selves. Focusing on the outer just promotes people to live at the gym or in front mirrors. But also, practice how to source this confidence from within and be forever self-sustained.
The words of someone who is conventionally attractive.
Not saying you’re a douche, just that someone telling me “You’re hot” would make my fucking year. Most particularly because it’d be the only time that whole year that anyone says that. And I’m not all that ugly. But I’m also not conventionally attractive. So appreciate the fact you have the chance to get bored of being told “You’re hot”
No, words of someone who has gone through a brutal journey from a place of self-hate, and was only seen as attractive because he spent a third of his existence working out for the attention of men. First of all, you assume I’ve been attractive my whole life which is NOT the case, and you’re basing your statement on photos of me from years ago; a lot has happened to my body and mind since then. You have no idea what I look like right now. You have no idea what I looked like in high school. Any photo you’ve seen of me were from another time in my life when everyone reduced me to my looks and that’s all I felt I had, and you have no idea the cosmetic shit, the grooming, the endlessly bland/cold meals, the hours I spent at the gym to look the way I did. Here you are continuing to reduce me to my looks because that’s how you value people and how you devalue yourself. Obviously, everything I wrote went way over your head.
