Small fry discovered

Another successful Toad Meetup where I flexed my latest acquisition to a crowd of jealous peers… just kidding. This little Mexican spadefoot toad [Spea multiplicata] was actually found in a parking lot in Hillsboro, New Mexico, by photographer Katie Belle Duke. Quite a rare sight for most of the year, these toads can sometimes be found hopping along roads following periods of rain.

Now it is time for the soaking of the toads. Here we see a group of Colorado river toads [Incilius alvarius] getting ready to do just that. These desert dwellers are excellent at retaining water, and will eagerly seek out water sources in order to replenish themselves. These toads were photographed in Hermosillo, Mexico, by Holly Boom.

Quite the intimidating scowl from this Mozambique rain frog [Breviceps mossambicus], a species with wide distribution throughout southern and central Africa. today’s funky frog of the day is: spea hammondii! commonly known as the western spadefoot toad or hammond’s spadefoot toad, they are found in western california and northwestern baja california. they can be anywhere between 1.5 and 3 inches long. they are nocturnal, and their natural habitats include oak woodlands, grassland, shrub, and chaparral. unusually, these frogs secrete a peanut butter smell when handled, making them easier to handle than other species in their genus, but the smell may cause sneezing. adults mainly feed on grasshoppers, moths, beetles, spiders, ants, and earthworms. females can lay up to 2,000 eggs at a time, and the average lifespan for these frogs is about 12 years.
