Pond life. Art by M. A. Koekkoek (1, 4) and Ned Seidler.
Image 4—a version of image 1 as you can see; I’m not sure which one came first—used to hang on the wall of the staircase in my aunt’s house. I passed it often, and I always looked at it. Sometimes it was just a sideways glance, other times I studied it more thoroughly. But I always had to look. To live among those creatures beneath the surface... Somehow that idea appealed to me. I can easily get lost staring at these illustrations, especially the fourth one, with its twilight haze and its misty floor, teeming with life and yet so quietly mysterious.

The threespot dascyllus, domino damsel, or simply domino (Dascyllus trimaculatus) is a species of damselfish from the family Pomacentridae. It is native to the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa, to the Pitcairn Islands, southern Japan, and Australia. It has two lateral white spots and one between the eyes like a domino, hence the name. However, its coloration is somewhat variable and the spot on the forehead may be absent and the lateral spots very much reduced. Generally, adults are found in small groups around coral heads or large rocks. Juveniles may be found associated with large sea anemones or sheltering between the spines of diadema sea urchins or branching corals. This species may be found to depths of 55 m.
