“Hey, Bucky,” Natasha calls.

He hums to acknowledge he heard her.

“Congratulations on being elected as the Congressman for Indiana’s 6th Congressional District.”

She’s flipping through a newspaper, a real one, not one of the website versions Sam looks at on his phone.

Sam snorts, “They must be getting desperate.”

“He’s getting sworn-in in two weeks.”

Bucky freezes and looks at Natasha. She’s not joking. After living in the Tower with her for so long, he’d gotten to know what her poker face looked like. With all her training in the Red Room, she never broke cover unless she meant to. She’s not joking.

second 100 (ish) words

“You’re being serious?!” Sam exclaims.

“What’s going on?” Steve walks in, puzzled.

“Bucky’s a Congressman,” Natasha answers, like this makes logical sense.

“For New York?”

“No, for Indiana.”

What is happening?

“Wow,” Steve muses, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m really proud of you, Buck. This is a great step. You’re continuing to serve our country, just on a different sort of battlefield.”

“But- I-” Bucky chokes.

“I know,” Steve walks over and claps his best friend on the shoulder. “There aren't any words. Democracy leaves me breathless.”

Bucky looks helplessly to the side and Sam falls out of his chair, cackling. Steve starts whistling Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” and walks out of the room as quickly as he entered. Natasha just flips to the next page in the newspaper.

Pepper is the only one being helpful at the moment. Bucky knows she’s far too busy running Stark’s so-called “empire,” their media coverage, public opinion, and general antics, but somehow she still finds time to drag him into the conference room and pull up a presentation, but without a slide projector. She’d tried to teach him how to use the remote before, but he broke it, and as much as she assured him that they could replace the remote, he’d avoided them since.

“Since you joined the team, you’ve obviously experienced a surge in media coverage, and public opinion of you has generally been very high,” she hits a button and displays a graph that clearly shows a line going up, but otherwise its meaning is lost on him.

Generally?” He raises any eyebrow.

“Well, there were those assassinations,” she hedges gently. Bucky grunts his understanding. “Based on our preliminary assessments, calls to write your name on the ballot started populating on social media soon after the Smithsonian expanded the Howling Commandos exhibit to include a specific section on you, given you are still alive.”

“So I was elected by a petition?”

“More like a bunch of people decided to write your name on the ballot as a joke, except enough of them were in on the joke that it became serious.”

“But the election is still valid?”

“Yep.”

“I don’t even live in Indiana anymore.”

“I think that was part of the joke.”

Bucky sighs, running his hand over his face. He would be the first to admit he wasn’t the most qualified candidate, or should he say congressman now that he was actually elected? Then again, Tony said that most of the politicians weren’t qualified these days. Bucky didn’t know if this was another example of Tony lying at Bucky’s expense, or if he was being serious. Could he turn the seat down?

He broaches the question to Pepper.

“Of course,” she says diplomatically, and her face doesn’t even twitch. “That is always an option.”

independent living centers provide services and support by disabled people for disabled people and can help with: navigating systems, self-advocacy, and accessing services, among many other things. in their truest form, CILs function not in the model of state agencies, but as a form of structured in-community mutual aid. my local CIL provides services like counseling, advocacy, grants to cover some home needs, and meals on wheels for disabled adults under sixty-five. CILs can't fill all the gaps in services we have in this country, but they do important work to keep people alive. if you need help, your local center for independent living may be able to help. if you can give help, your local center for independent living can definitely use your help!!!!!
