Rakitin's character is shaped by impersonation and envy, being a shadow of the Karamazovs, though quite an ineffective one. He envies Ivan, speaking of him with the most venom because no matter how socially skilled he is, Ivan is seen by others as more interesting and intelligent than him. Instead of asking questions, he wants his own answers about this family to be true to prove his own intelligence. He envies Alyosha's moral beauty and natural likeability, being a superficially likeable but insincere and selfish person himself. By trying to provoke him into "corruption", he appropriates such beauty, trying to "expose" his ulterior motives when all he does is project his own, perhaps, to find similarity when his imitation is not enough. He envies Mitya's appealing boldness and vigour, reducing him to his physical impulses, yet bearing the resentment of a "clever man" towards open eroticism (see his attitude towards Grushenka). This last one may seem like a stretch, but it seems like a bit of a Freudian slip that after his ridiculous courtship of Mme Khokhlakova failed, he slandered her in an article by wrongly portraying Mitya as an unattainable object of her desire.

i will always champion finding a recent translation when reading an ancient text but i do also think there is value in learning how to read older translations and especially how to read them critically. for one thing it's a snapshot of how a work was perceived at a specific time and by a specific person, but also those translations do have literary value and may reveal something about the source text that you won't find in something newer. and it's also the case that newer translations can have many of the same flaws, because we are still in a racist misogynist etc. world.

I want fallout fans to know you don’t need to adhere to the 50s aesthetic. You don’t need to make your character (or NPCs) wear a 50s housewife dress or a greaser leather jacket. You can if you want but you don’t have to. Fo1/fo2 were heavily based on mad max and were originally supposed to have that 80s aesthetic, the 50s retrofuturism was more of an additional lore retcon to make it unique. Adam Adamowicz concept art also a super unique 50s retrofuturism that is combined with 80s industrial scifi/body horror with the implants and the pip boy being attached to you.
