The Horror Of Facing The Blank Page: Part 1 Overcoming Creative Fear Forever!
As a artist and writer we all face the blank page! The hitman that make us fear we have nothing to say and hold us from creative block. Yes I have had to face the mercy before and sometimes do. What should I draw? What should I write? Where do I start? This is a 3 part series over coming creative fear forever!! Thanks to "The Oatley Academy of Visual Storytelling (The Storytellers Submit)", "Steal Like an Artist" by Austan Kleon, and " Understanding Comic by Scott Mcclound I'm able to break the shackle that binds me in the depths of HELL! Keeping me away from being creative. Now let tackle the 3 obstacles that make it hard to start! Let be water my friend!
3 obstacles that make it seem Impossible
1. The fear if messing up (Perfectionism)
Have you had the fear if messing up? Messing up that beautiful fine good looking sexy white line paper/bristle board that speaking to you " Don't mess me up, draw or write on me with perfection". Don't listen to it because if you do, you will never get anything done. Put something down first, THEN make it pretty and sexy. Appreciate the progressive nature of art. Fall in love with the process, you will improve over time and getting better and the more you write and/or draw. Look at it like this when I Loin is hunting a gazelle and a gazelle is hurt does the Loin attack it? No, The Loin watches the gazelle because it's hurt! Fall in love with the process, people what the prize but don't fall in let with the process.
"Every want to eat but few are willing to hunt, everyone want to success but a few are whiling to put in the work required".
You going to go though 10 to 20 of them if you want to be good, so keep working at it and love the process! Live through the ugly ducky and work with what you have.
2. Worrying about Originality (Comparison)
We all worry about being original with our work and of course I thought about it as well, however from "Steal Like an Artist" by Austan Kleon "Nothing is original". The writer Jonathan Lethem said that when people call something "original," nine out of ten time they just don't know the reference or the original source involved. What a good artist understands is that nothing comes from nowhere. All creative work builds in what came before. Nothing is completely original." Also in the Bible " There is nothing new under the sun." (Eccelesiastes 1:2)
Every artist will get asked this question, "Where do you get ideas?" and the honest artist answers will be "I steal them." Figure out what's worth stealing, then move on to the next. Don't worry about originality run with it and build on top of it, originality comes from combining ideas or material or coming up with whatever has been done before. In Hip-Hop and Rap it called remix! Look at this video
Don't compare to much, don't play down your uniqueness, don't water yourself don't, don't look at the left and the right see too what the other person doing! How In look at it is when I see something that I like that is far better than me. I think and look at it as I know I can get to that level because this person is human, so that means I can get the that level to and maybe further with my own art style. I'm not to much worrying about how good that other person is, however I admire their work and I believe I can get to that level just by having faith of look at other work. I don't compare myself because it all started at being an amateur. Writing and drawing is a skill not a talent. I suggest picking up Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable by Tim Grover. A great book on mental toughness and you will get a goos understanding why it not a good looking at other because you will not be focus on your own work. remember you are unique don't it down, don't compare yourself so much and don't fight against it accept it. You will improve over time because of the Law of Inertia and the 80/20 principal or Pareto's principle ( I will write about a blog about Pareto's principle later)
3. Fear of having "Nothing to say" (Self-Doubt)
The fear of having nothing to say, bruh I can reality and having doubt... yes I remember it so well. What I learn is you don't need to say anything. I learn to have faith what what I have, what you want to say. I hope that make s sense to you. have faith and yes we all have doubt, buy we don't have to say anything just don't let that stop you from creating art. Don't need to say anything right away just create and everything else will come together. When I started off creating Fallen The Son Of Synn, everything did not make not sense however overtime is started to come together because of changes and lots of ideas keep coming even though it still in the works but don't let that stop you from creating, have faith.
