u no what really fuckin gets me… when we sent out the voyager probes we didn’t expect their instruments to even last as long as they have so far, like. yeah, we wanted to gather information but that was second to just… declaring our existence. like some teenagers writing on the walls of an abandoned metro tunnel. voyager 1 won’t pass by another star for 40,000 years, but that’s not the point. it doesn’t matter when someone finds it. we just fucking want to be remembered, by someone, anyone, eventually.
i just keep thinking about the pictures and stuff on there. a woman in a supermarket. kids gathered around a globe. rush hour traffic in thailand. did you know there’s a song by blind willie johnson on there, too? if anyone ever finds voyager, they’ll get to listen to dark was the night, cold was the ground, and i can’t tell you what emotions they’ll feel but i bet they’ll think about this little probe, pushing forward for thousands of years, alone, in the dark. i bet they’ll think about the probability of voyager ever being found, and realize that we must have sent it out on pure hope. i wonder what they’ll think about us, about humanity. because the biggest qualities we demonstrated when we launched voyager were curiousity, and a desire to share, and an inclination toward hope, always and forever.
