I remember waaaaay back when eah started they released ebook short stories of the main cast on their last day of summer break. And Ashlynn is woken by her mom to start getting her things ready for school. During this Ashlynn sees her moms famous glass slippers and dreams of the day she will inherit them. Only to be knocked back to reality at remembering that will only happen when her mother is dead, a fact she does not like to think about.

People always talked about Cerise living a lie or Briar sleeping her life away. But Ashlynns destiny always felt really fucked up to me. I dont know if they fleshed this out in the other books, but as far as I’m aware, Ashlynn does love her mother. But shes the sacrifice to a happy ending. Ashlynn has to bear the knowledge that she will get a fairytale wedding, meet a handsome prince, have those slippers shes coveted all her life, only her mother wont be around for any of those things. Ashlynn would have to live with that guilt that the moment she agreed to her destiny, it would be the final nail in the coffin. And one day she would have a child as well that would do the same to her.

Imagine being Cinderella. You spend years toiling away, being neglected and humiliated in your own home. Knowing you had willingly brought it on yourself the moment you signed that book. But what choice did you have? But it dosen’t matter, that grief is still there. You may not have directly killed her, but this wouldn’t happen if your mother was alive, but that cant be because it is not how the story goes. You have to spend your youth in misery to gain a happy life, but you’ll never know what it’s like to grow old with the people you love.

Imagine knowing who is destined to be the wicked stepmother. Knowing the woman who will replace you. Marry the man you love. Knowing who is going to hurt your daughter for years and years and being unable to do anything about it. Your daughter grows up, is excited for legacy day. To begin the path towards her happily ever after.
