" Sometimes I get so far into my head that I forget anything else exists "
A few days ago I read Call Me By Your Name. I particularly have a bad relationship with books that have seen movies because most of the time the adaptations I got to see spoiled all the magic of the story I had already read and I will always prefer the book. In this case, it was no different, it just changed the order.
The filming and aesthetics of Call Me By Your Name have always caught my attention and I say without a second thought that in cinematic matters this film is one of my favorites. I also always had a peculiar characteristic of being a fan of sad and melancholy stories, without happy endings. When we seek art in general, we seek to escape our reality and this makes happy stories more pleasing to us (because the bitterness of life is enough). However, I believe that art also serves us to express all kinds of feelings and the naked truth of the human being. These details were what made me have a affection and sentimental attachment to this 2007 work.
I believe that Call Me By Your Name talks about love in the purest form, youthful love and that proves us once again that the age difference does influence our decisions and thoughts. 17-year-old Elio seems to be unafraid to express himself and is probably truly in love for the first time in his life. When we are young, the world seems amazing and beautiful too and we always make a point of giving everything we have and giving ourselves completely. Meanwhile, Oliver, who is already older and who must have lived through more things than the other boy, often proves to be much more mature and able to deal with the separation in a more "calm" way. 7 years is a lot of years.
The book also manages to demonstrate in words much more vulgarity and sexual desire. The "controversial" peach scene or passages such as the red shorts for me become clearer and more explanatory and make the film and the book become, in the end, a complement. The controversial and the vulgar are perhaps the most beautiful demonstration of the true meaning of "Call Me By Your Name". Call me by your name and I'll call you by mine is like saying: "join me and we become one flesh and one body. I in you and you in me".
The biggest pain is that of the reunion, where 20 years pass and they still show that they haven't forgotten anything. "I remember everything." And the pain of meeting two soul mates who were meant to find each other, but not be together the way they wanted to.
