“Your Highness.” Auguste said bowing low to the princess, who reminded him of a young Ella.

It wasn’t often that Adora got to go into town. Her lessons aside, there was quite a bit of planning that needed be done on the grown ups’ part each time she did. She did still have her lessons, and the additional ones took in the Moors. But today, today she’d been given permission to wander around the square, so long as Percival came with her of course.

“Yes, very far.” Auguste smiled, he had silk to trade today from his home country, and after he had sold it all he intended to get something for Ella, just as he always did when he went away.

“My darling wife,” Auguste greeted before walking into Lucienne’s open arms. He hated being away from home for long periods of time, especially now that the couples darling daughter Ella had been born.

“Well, we will have to remedy that right away.” Auguste laughed, the gentle man adored his wife and daughter with all his heart, being away from them was like living without air to breathe.

“I will not be deterred.”

“Being a widow would not be unwelcome.”

“If we were wed, it could be beneficial for both of us.”

Auguste laughed, Flora was indeed right, Ella shot up like a weed every time he went away, and how he hated to be away from he beloved daughter and wife.

“My darling,” Auguste greeted kissing his wife, he’d been on the road for several weeks, and after his long journey it was good to be home.

“Welcome home, my love,” Lucienne greeted in return. 

She gratefully took the offered parcel from his hands and unwrapped it carefully. Inside was a poetry book, the cover embroidered with silver flowers. 

“I saw it and thought of you, I thought you could read it to the baby when the baby arrives. Speaking of the baby, you’re well, you and the baby both?” Auguste asked wrapping his arms around his wife’s waist.

Anastasia felt her heart swell. Did this mean he loved her? Was this what a father’s love was like?

“Can I stay with you?” Anastasia asked hopefully.

“Stay with me?” Auguste asked he had not expected such a request from his stepdaughter, he had figured that she would much rather explore the village with her mother and sister.

“If you like, but I can’t promise it will be much fun, I’m going to visit the animals today. Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll see a new lamb amongst the sheep.”

“As you wish, mademoiselle.” Auguste smiled his stepdaughter was proving to be more interesting than he had expected.
