Monolith large. 63" x 64" (Unstretched, Ships Rolled)
This painting explores the quiet violence of what society chooses to value. At its center, a cement block—an object born of infrastructure and permanence—is held, supported, and strained over by human figures. Their hands grasp it with urgency and care, as if the object itself carries more weight than the lives surrounding it. Faces emerge and recede around the block, suggesting individuals caught in a system where labor, productivity, and material progress are codified as worth, often eclipsing human presence and vulnerability.
Like the Monolith painting, this work reflects on how industrial symbols become normalized, even revered, while the people who uphold them are rendered secondary. The cement brick becomes a stand-in for systems of power, stability, and survival—unquestioned, immovable, and demanding. Through layered figures and raw, expressive brushwork, the painting asks the viewer to consider what is being held up, and at what cost.
