"I suspect only you know the answer to this question, my dear Charles," the mage said, tilting his head to the side while a small sad smile spread onto his face. "But fret not, for all is not lost. The past is in the past and so shall it remain. Shall we look into the present now?"
Charles nodded in reply, and even if he could not see the glint in the older man's eyes, he could feel his curiosity and satisfaction in the Lunar Energy pulsing around them. Charles reached his hand out, softly turning the card onto its other side.
"Oh my… " came Michael's surprised voice. "The Lovers! One of the most interesting Lunar Arcana."
Beneath his blindfold, Charles furrowed his brows, suddenly very aware of his entire being.
"What does this one mean?"
With a soft laugh, the mage leaned closer to the table. "This means that you have had an unprecedented emotional experience. The joy of finding your soul becoming intertwined with that of another… A precious and wonderful thing indeed."
A flush had started creeping onto his skin, his milky white skin born of the Frostmoon now deeply affected by his human heart, which had started beating wildly inside his chest. Because Charles knew that not even a few paces away, Max was standing nursing his wine, deeply entangled in a conversation with the others while his eyes were only trained on the back of Charles' own figure.
It was scary to think how his treacherous heart had fallen for the human. Even now, as his road to godhood was imminent...
"It's true," Charles made himself murmur, softly tilting his head downwards. He could feel the soft laugh bubble inside the mage's chest.
"Ah, that sounds lovely. I am most delighted for you. However, I must tell you that The Lovers can also represent important decisions, perhaps related to a parting of ways. Now, if I were to guess…"
"Yes… My return to the Moon…" he murmured, the embarrassment of his flush now turning into something similar to shame or fear. It coiled tightly in his gut, at the base of his back, where the twin scars hurt even now.
"I understand," Michael, nodded, face falling into a soft frown. "Parting with those we love is never easy, Charles. But rest assured, this is not the end of your journey. There is always another story waiting to be told. The future always lies ahead."
The mage motioned with his hand to the last unflipped card and that unease inside Charles' body tripled in size.
"It's finally time to flip this most mysterious of cards. Why did it appear? And what does it wish to tell you?"
Taking in a deep breath and straightening his back, Charles gave the other man a nod and a soft smile.
"I'm ready," he said, reaching out and softly gripping the corner of the card.
"Very well, flip this card and see what lies on the other side- Oh."
Beneath Charles' fingers, the card sat innocently gazing up at the two. Unable to read it, he tilted his head curiously, surprised at the stutter the mage let out.
"Mage Michael? What is it?" he asked, curiosity and unease now bubbling inside his body. There was a flash of emotion that danced across the mage's face, one Charles had no time to decipher until it faded away. But schooling his expression, Michael raised his head, looking ahead at him.
