Sometimes I'm yoinked out of the repetitive tedium of day-to-day life by the tiniest little moments of human connection.
In the biology labs where I work, the air pressure system is super wonky. Lately this has resulted in a super shrill whistling noise caused by air moving through the gaps in a storage room's door. It's not something I've ever discussed with my coworkers, we're never even near there at the same time. I typically just open the door a crack as I walk by to temporarily stop the noise. Today I walked in to see a roll of tape holding the door open, evidence that one of my coworkers got so fed up with this reoccuring noise that they impulsively grabbed whatever was closest to prop the door open, and that happened to be a roll of lab tape.
Ultimately it means nothing, just that the both of us were independently experiencing the same thing. We never talked about it but by leaving this impromptu door stopper, there's a moment of connection over a shared problem. It's not even really noteworthy, it's just a part of everyday mundane life, but today it made me feel a little more human.
