FLATLINERS (2017), dir. Niels Arden Oplev

Walking into the bar. She bee lined to an empty chair at the bar. “Elena Gilbert a bar tender?” She examined the free drink suspiciously. Of course she’d mistake the first doppelganger with the latest one. Katerina was too cowardly to show her face in front of her presence. She knew better. It would be her death if so. Rebekah tapped the umbrella touching the end of it with her tongue. The contents of the drink seemed clean.
“You and I? having a chat? No…” The original said. Their ‘chats’ always ended in blood shed. She believed she was speaking to Elena. The trust between the two women was barely there. “I’d rather not get stabbed in the back again.”
THE ORIGINAL BLONDIE WAS RIGHT. there’s something about her last comment that activated something within tatia. she was right. there was indeed a tendency in her blood to push people away, to stab them in the back although she had no ulterior motive for it. lips pursed into a thin line, shoulders rising & falling as if given rebekah approbation, that did happen and it was all on me. so why wouldn’t the drink be too on her? she quickly turned around on her heels, grabbing an old bottle of whiskey. alike many stories she knew, what’s old means that is also bitter, but better nonetheless. ❝ you’re right. that’s why i’m giving you free drinks. that, and of course, if you accept to have a little chat. no backstabbing, you’ll barely hear anything coming from this mouth. just… tell me how are you, how have you been. is that a little too much? ❞ genuine concern, no matter which version with the same visage rebekah thought she was, it was still dangerous, to come across her even, let alone sparking up a conversation as if, there was no bad blood separating the two of them.
Her hand let go of Tatia’s throat forcefully. Making the original doppelganger nearly take a few steps back at her release. “I don’t want your help or whatever debt you feel owed to me!.” Rebekah’s voice rose. “You will leave my brothers alone or I will kill you.” Her blue eyes were piercing as she spoke of her elder siblings. “I’ve dealt with the three of you lot over a thousand years. I’d like to never see your face again.” Tatia was a reminder of the humanity she lost. She, Katerina, and Elena. All of them possessed an ulterior motive. It was in their blood. Rebekah distrusted them with every fiber of her being. She crossed her arms. deciding to entertain herself. “You may… I would choose your words carefully.”
THREATS WERE RIGHTFULLY DESERVED. she was scared to some extent — but not enough, clearly. doe eyes scanned her surroundings, hoping to find something, an object to cling on. if she focuses on something, she can calm herself more efficiently. tatia took a step back, gaze fixed upon the silver cut ring on her finger. ❝ i know you’re angry, ❞ and rebekah had all rights to do as such, similar to how tatia had the rights to be afraid. ❝ but i can help. with something i believe matters to you. but please, correct me if i’m wrong… ❞ voice cracked under pressure and tatia was left stone cold at what was supposed to follow from her cursed tongue. ❝ what if there is a way of achieving something that you never truly had? being free to choose who you want. and be with them. ❞ an offer hard to accomplish given the state of her relationship with the entire family, yet not so impossible to reach by any means.

Life is beautiful, as long as it consumes you. When it is rushing through you, destroying you, life is gorgeous, glorious. It’s when you burn a slow fire and save fuel, that life’s not worth having.

Broken promises had littered Rebekah’s past, both from acquaintances and devils wearing the masks of people she loved. While she may be prone to the sweet words they whispered she knew well enough not to trust them on face value alone – finally. With how much she had lost – how much time had been stolen from her – it would be oh-so-easy to accept the woman before her as a sister stolen from her at the price of immortality. If the world were kind she could embrace the familiar figure without lending a thought to lessons past learnt.
Her mind raced with questions she could ask. Enquiring about a trinket a young girl made for an even younger babe was too easy—her own memories had often been used against her, let alone those of a ghost. Instead, she kept to the simple “How – where have you been?” She feared if she said more it would only be followed by the inevitable plea of ‘ if it is truly you, why? Why has it taken so long? ‘, but that was a dangerous road, one too close to accepting Tatia’s claims as truth.
TIME STOPPED FOR A BRIEF MOMENT. and she was insatiable for those. doe eyed gaze staring at the exquisite damsel before her very own eyes. she missed rebekah. truly, undeniably, unequivocally. ancient heart sank for a moment and she was unable to think properly, too many thoughts rushing at an unbelievably fast pace. mouth half opened and nothing came out. what could she say? nothing could change the fact that she left them. agonizing as her life was after their mother used her drained ichor, she had a choice. to stick around. but she didn’t. a lie? could work, but it would only make things worst. so truth then shall be spoken. that could be a good start. ❝ it’s a long story, one which has been twisted so many times that now i’m left to hear hundreds of alternated story lines. but, i didn’t die. ❞ those words pained her like no other. because what followed was the aching truth. ❝ and i hid, all over the place. but please, try to understand that after what i’ve done, and i keep myself accountable for it, i couldn’t face you. neither of you. i thought- ❞ that they’d kill her. again, for some. firstly, for others. ❝ i’ve made a grave mistake trusting esther and i only realized it when it was too late, ❞ she became breathless, words coming out too fast, almost unintelligible, ❝ i’m sorry for ruining everything. ❞

She was right. People did love to eavesdrop. This bar wasn’t exactly a big one. He looked around at the people betting money on a game of pool in the corner. The rest of the crowd was sitting, drinking, and watching an old game on the tv. He looked back at her tempting him to go with her.
“What the hell.” He gathered up his things, and threw his laptop bag over his shoulder. Sam followed the women into the night. He checked for his pistol in his holster. It was loaded with wooden bullets. All the signs pointed to a vampire from the bite marks from his case file. He pursed his lips on guard for the attractive woman to show any signs of her true motive to get him alone. “We’re far enough. What’ya know?” He asked, walking beside her as she strut along side him. He stopped. “Let’s just say I have little bit of trust issues with killer on the loose.”
A SHEER MOMENT OF FEEDING HER EGO. he complied with her request. that meant that the game had begun. for a while, they wandered into the moonlit streets, no place pinpointed to arrive. it was moments like those, in which she stopped worrying and appreciated life, no matter how chaotic it was. but he broke the silence. rude. head turned to a side, doe eyed gaze darting up to look sam in the eyes. ❝ have you always been a buzz killer? ❞ her words were carefully chosen, given the situation that connected them. a sigh followed, whilst arms crossed against her chest. ❝ at first, i didn’t think much of it. people get killed for numerous reasons on a daily basis, we all lost count. but when it became more frequent, it was a matter of time until the folks decided it was a serial killer on the loose and everyone’s life was in danger. as you could see back there, they care, just not enough. anyway, i don’t think this is just a serial killer, i think it’s a gang. though it’s still bothering me that they do not take personal belongings. crime of passion, maybe? or is it a paid assassin? ❞ manicured brow arose as lips pursed into a thin line. ❝ also, i got you out of there because i too fear for my safety. if i’m not alone, that makes me less of a target. and if you were the culprit, then i’d have to kill you. ❞ she mused nonchalantly, fastening her pace.

He can sense the tension in her, feel it like waves of pressure pouring from her body. At first he thinks she’s afraid, filled with fear for what he might do to her, but that soon changes as she speaks. Her anger is clear – though it is not directed at him. Niklaus wonders why.
“I do not want or need your forgiveness,” he growls, unable to control his own rage. And his is most certainly directed toward her specifically. “And I’d rather not hear any more from you unless it’s a bloodcurdling scream.” He has yet to make good on his threats, but if she continues to push, he just might soon enough.
And yet she continues on, her tone changing vastly and her demeanor growing tired. Frustrated. Defeated. Tatia was never one for fighting before, and Klaus isn’t surprised that it hasn’t changed. The realization brings small, fond memories to the forefront of his mind that he promptly pushes away; he cannot recall stolen moments and passionate kisses whilst he is very blatantly threatening her. He will not be a hypocrite.
“And again, I say – it’s a little too late for that. Your apologies and if I had knowns mean nothing to me.” A pause in his speech leads to him stepping toward her, albeit slowly. “I don’t even have to torture you, really. My satisfaction comes from the knowledge that your choice led to your inevitable end.” Niklaus stands in front of her now. The proximity between them would have been intoxicating, once upon a time. But that time is long past, and he forces his heart to slow its excitement as he leans down, speaking low into her ear. “ – and I hope that when Elijah was draining you lifeless, you realized the grave mistake you had made.”
SENTIMENTS OF ALL SORTS TWISTING AND TURNING WITHIN, FORMING A LUMP IN HER THROAT. she used to know him, appreciate his presence and acknowledging his power, over her heart at least. the man in front of her however turned out to be scarier than she ever could imagine. heartless, self assured, ready to come for her throat. there were many ways in order to inflict pain to someone and niklaus managed to inflict pain to her intellect and to her heart alike. she was helpless around him, always been, regardless how many centuries have passed them. ❝ do you mean it? ❞ unfiltered thought formed into words and was mistakenly said out loud. it took her a moment to realize what she did and her doe eyed gaze darted upon the floor, ashamed of so much she forgot the count. ❝ right now, you mean it, of course, why did i even bother asking that, ❞ not the proper save for the moment, but good enough at last. ❝ but did the old niklaus share the same opinion? it was him i wanted to apologize the most. the old you, the one who had honorable values. ❞ cue the dice that’s been cast, she was entering a dangerous zone, but she had to continue, even if it led to her destruction. ❝ not implying that you don’t have those anymore, but by your nature, i know they’re tainted. but you’re not a monster, like i first believed, centuries ago. i know you have your reasons. ❞ tatia herself couldn’t discern if what she said was either truth or lie and her heart began throbbing again. for caution she took another step back, doe eyes fixated on his physique – in case he were to attack her. the bomb she’s thrown out there was almost ticking out of time, she thought.
