it had not been a complete surprise.
hideo had been aware of the interview, had a vague overview of elijah's schedule whenever he opened their shared calendar and was confronted by the barrage of colors highlighting different events, all his games in cool gray while eli's life was a vivid mixture of blue, red, yellow, green, pink, all for different occasions (blue meant filming, red meant overseas, yellow meant interview or press, green meant photoshoot, pink was reserved for premieres, a color added to the vernacular after eli's life had expanded and exploded, the hectic usually only reserved for hideo's erratic season schedule finally clawing at elijah, too.) when he had been in the middle of it, hideo had been on the other side of the country for a series in seattle right at the beginning of the season, and he had gotten a million texts in between the setups, the pictures, the questions and whatnot. about the bad craft table food, the terrible phone reception, the even slower wifi, the nice lady interviewing him, the bespoke clothes they had put him in. hideo had soaked it up like a sponge once he was reunited with his phone, had saved every candid picture elijah had sent him to his phone, not necessarily uncaring of who was watching but mindful either way. it was better to be safe than sorry. after all, loose lips sunk ships all the time and hideo enjoyed his career for what it was.
the result was infinitely amusing, though, and miguel, one of their rookie infielders, had left the magazine strewn around in the clubhouse, easy for hideo to catch the sight of a familiar face in the middle of it. not in the back, which was reserved for people no one gave a fuck about, but close to the center, where the good stuff and important people where located. it made him stupidly proud, no matter how meaningless it was, because he had seen how long it had taken eli to get there, and if eli could cheer for every asinine achievement hideo had accomplished, he could do the same three times over. it was no hardship to do so, even less so when he had sat down in front of his locker and read what had actually been written, what eli had actually said. he was known for his quick mouth and the funny nonsense he occasionally came up with, blessed with a quickfire wit hideo could never hope to even attempt, and it made conversations with him fast and quirky, something hideo had enjoyed the first time they had met, that he enjoyed to this day or else he would have never shared his life with the actor to begin with. he had made his peace with the fact that the only silence he would ever find was on the field, because his home was a constant wall of noise, music that played from phone speakers or his vinyl player, the television playing some show that eli had grown obsessed with, the constant stream of words eli never got tired of, that hideo listened to with rapt attention. for the most part, anyway.
" am i looking smug? i think i have any right to, " hideo said and he could barely hide the grin on his face. elijah was standing in the middle of their kitchen, his face dismayed and somewhat sheepish, his ears and cheeks pink, and hideo was leaning against their kitchen counter and grinning so wide that he was afraid it made him look all dumb. " i mean, elijah hsu said that the only reason he goes to the stadium is to see the players. one player, actually, he corrected himself in the middle of the interview. it has to be true, because i read it in a magazine, hm? " he knew he was gloating, insufferably so, but he couldn't help it; when he had read what eli had said, he could barely hide the warmth flooding him either, the satisfaction of such a public, obvious claim, even if eli had never said his name. it wasn't hard to figure out if you checked his instagram, and hideo had finally arrived at a place where he was comfortable enough to admit it, admit this big thing he had kept a secret for so long. his agent was about to get a heart attack once the season was over, once hideo would make the announcement, but it was a fair price considering the years of secrecy hideo had lived in. he snorted, " please be serious, i lost my virginity like twenty years ago. " give or take, it was a rough estimate but hideo was old now, older than he had ever been. " they should have given you my jersey, actually. you should have been photographed in that. "
