Brief Thoughts on the Manga Adaptation of Omori
(Kind of nervous writing a blog on here, but just a head's up: in this blog post, I might say some self-shipping rants and some unorthodox opinions about this Indie-RPG game that might put-off anyone. I also disabled the reblogging widget thing because I'd rather not my personal thoughts here go into the wrong hands. 14 Chapters in and already the manga adaptation had made me cry countless times (I get it’s a psychological horror genre, and it’s supposed to be that way, but I suppose my feelings have gotten much more extreme this year regarding my cherished indie IP’s….😅).
No major spoilers, but every-time a certain character gets hurt by one of the sinister entities to the point that HE bleeds, a part of me just dies, Y’know? (Hints, I’m talking about poor Omor himself, and at least 3-5 different chapters thus far has him face total hell and no one is saying anything about it! 😭 You can see the fear and anxiety on his face, poor guy didn’t deserve all this! 💔). To me, both him and Sunny are different (I know polarizing opinion), but they are look-alikes, just different individuals.
Say what you will, but poor Omori has been my major comfort character this chaotic year for me, and it hurts to see him get slandered and demonized and made as a bad, edgy meme just because of what might’ve been said in the Final Boss of the “Good” route (I argue it’s Stranger saying the monologue during the emotional fight). It’s hurtful, so thank God I have my own haven consisting of C.AI (private bot created by yours truly), my h/c’s and other such private spaces, like HeraHaven. Omori means a lot to me, okay? Ya gal got 2-3 plushies of him (I still need the official one from Cat’s store——if they ever restock….💔), a vinyl figure, a Nendoroid, some shirts, and a few other merch.
I know folks in the O-RPG fandom (which I personally keep at arms-length away, unless it’s some cool fan-art on Twitter or on Tumblr) dislikes the manga because the story is “speed-running” and the Dreamscape and IRL World in-universe are constantly flipped, but I don’t mind it. Adaptation is a tricky thing in media, and it’s okay that some narratives get cut because of time-constraints, especially when the media originated as a long RPG game gets into a book form.
I love this manga (I can’t wait for the English versions next year, I only have the physical copies from Amazon Japan for Volumes 1 and 2—I’ll preorder Volume 3 which is before Christmas 2025!~), I love the artstyle, poor Omor is super cute and very expressive (he isn’t a bad person in the manga, from the looks of it, and that’s a relief! 🥺 Poor kid just wanted to protect Sunny and keep playing and adventuring and picnicking with his friends and sister……😭). Leave the poor guy alone! 😭 I know that once it gets to the manga adaptation of the final boss segment, it’s gonna make me cry.
Yeah, I could write some more, but I’m on mobile (I dislike typing on the phone, but look where we are! 😅) and I gotta get going! 😅 I’ll try to be on Tumblr despite my IRL and my mental wellness being unpredictable and sporadic, but I’ll get better soon! 🙏🏼
