people still getting mad at this post i made in 2014 so I will add here. in 2026. that the point of this post isn’t “happy endings bad” its when the story’s only way to imagine a happy ending is a heterosexual nuclear family for everyone.

Sometimes I get so emotional when I think about the Redfield Siblings all grown up, hovering around their 50s, tired and worn and still inseparable.

No matter how old they get, Claire looks at Chris and still sees that big dork in the matching leather jacket who'd pat her head and call her tough; and Chris sees his little baby sister, with skinned knees and fire in her eyes.

like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.

they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.
