the death of your (now ex) girlfriend had changed both you and shauna. you'd never expect jackie's passing to bring you and her best friend closer. thank god she's not around to see it, because jackie got jealous.
you'd been having problems with slight hallucinations. they'd slowed since winter, meshing less of jackie to more born from paranoia of the woods around you. you're sure you'd have died drifting through the wilderness at dusk if it weren't for shauna.
"hey," you jumped at the feeling of warm, big hands on your shoulders, snapping out of your thoughts and back to your surroundings. you turn to meet shauna, looking down at you with concern only reserved for you nowadays. "let's go back."
your shared hut was a place of solitude in the camp that had spiraled out of control, as shauna was never calm out there, and you often were overwhelmed by the others stares and murmurs.
"tell me what you saw this time." the brunette's hands threaded in your tangled hair, braiding it for you before you settled for bed. "was it her again?" shauna had gained more complicated resentment towards the dead girl, one for her getting to date you during her time alive, and two for the way she haunted you everyday.
"a little. but she went away." you answered honestly and quietly, picking at your thumb until it bled. "i just got distracted."
"you need to stop doing that." she finishes your hair and sits in front of you, looking into your eyes with the intensity that they hold now. "it worries me when i wake up and you're gone."
"i know." you nod, not pushing further on your reasons that don't exist.
"what do you think her problem is now?" you overheard misty whisper to mari, watching you listlessly hang a nightgown on the clothesline. "is it shauna or jackie?"
the murmurs continued between the two until it got to be too much for you. you folded the last piece of clothing with a sigh, abandoning it on the rock that was your makeshift table and walking from the two.
you knew shauna was near the lake, she'd been put on water duty today (much to her annoyance), and you needed rescue from the others.
shauna came into view when you reached the lake, her muscles shifting under her shirt as she lifted a metal bucket. she seemed to have heard your footsteps, because her head snapped around, ready to yell. she loosened up once she realized who it was.
her eyebrows pinched in a way that might look threatening to others, but to you, you could tell she was trying to read your emotions before you could speak.
"what's wrong?" the words came quick, and the bucket dropped fast from her hands onto the ground. she made it to you in long strides, hands settling on your waist as soon as she was in reach.
"nothing, i just needed a break." the lie fell flat on shauna's ears, and she could tell you were lying when the hand that wasn't on her arm went up to fiddle with the gold heart pendant on your chest. it was a nervous habit of yours, ever since jackie gave it to you to "keep you safe" on the first night after the crash.
"did someone say something?" your silence was response enough. she didn't push more, you would talk when you wanted. pressing you got nowhere, she'd learned that the hard way when a week after jackie died, you refused to talk to her for four days when she asked how you were feeling.
"it's fine. i just needed to see you." you said vulnerably, and her face softened as much as shauna shipman's face could after all she's been through.
"i'm here," she pulled you for a hug, one hand cradling the back of your head and one on your lower back. "they won't bother you anymore."

it had started four days ago. lottie's always been too observant, sometimes too much for her own good. so when she heard a small sniffle coming from where you slept in her arms, she knew something wasn't right. it was too deep into winter for it to just be the cold.
her suspicions were confirmed that morning when you woke up with a sore throat.
"here, drink some tea. it will help." her voice was almost a soothing coo while she gently lifted the mug to your lips. another thing about the brunette is that she was devoted. which means that when the girl she loves most is sick, she is all in.
"it's fine, lott." you attempt to protest, but you're quickly shushed as she gains persistence in her moves.
"you won't join us at morning prayer. at least drink some of this." you relent and sip some of whatever herbal mixture she's prepared. it's not bad, but the liquid burns your throat like acid and causes a grimace akin to vodka.
"that hurt." you mumble, leaning back onto the pillows on the floor. no doubt ones she's stolen from the others— she's not new to an abuse of power when it comes to you.
"i know, i know." she sets the mug down gently on the floor beside you, being careful not to spill any. "just drink it slowly."
she kneels in front of your slumped form, brown eyes staring into your soul with a gut-wrenching concern. her calloused hands come up to brush away the stray hairs that stick to your clammy forehead, and she presses the back of her hand to it instead.
the warmth that follows prompts a close-eyed and whispered prayer from her mouth, something too quiet for you to make out other than "wilderness" and "saves". her eyes flutter back open, looking down at you with that same crushed expression.
"you'll be okay. i'm not letting you leave me. it won't let you leave me." you don't question what "it" is particularly, or what she means by "leave me", having long accepted that your girlfriend now finds comfort in different... things rather than what she did before it all.
you nod tiredly, face paler than she'd like and eyes dimmer than usual. nobody's gotten sick like this out here before. mari had a small cough from the cold the second week it snowed, but she built a tolerance up fast. the fact that you'd been sick, actually sick for four days was concerning to everyone. but lottie wouldn't let anyone else tend to you. not even misty, the cabin's very own "nurse". she was a bit too possessive for that.
"sleep." she presses a kiss to your forehead, hand smoothing over your hair as if to try and calm you. you knew it was to calm herself. "drink the tea, you'll feel better in the morning." the words felt foreign on her own tongue, and she hadn't doubted what she'd said in a long while.
because it took two weeks for you to get better, and the wilderness provides. sure, you'll probably never fully recover from the illness, but at least you'll survive until spring, right?
