How I Perceive the Bible for a More Relational Reading Experience: an update
hey all! finals just ended so I just wanted to let you know I probably won’t be finishing my series on Bible study or won’t get around to finishing it until I get through Orthodox catechism, which I started earlier this year and want to make sure what I’m doing lines up decently with Orthodox thought more thoroughly. Thanks for understanding!

idk if this is gonna get misinterpreted but I feel like determining whether being LGBT is wrong can be kind of a weird chicken & egg thing for ppl who don’t know any LGBT people in person bc I think there are def certain aspects of like zoomer tiktok/twitter LGBT culture that really don’t align with Christian ideas to (at least in my experience) but it’s more just because a lot of these people feel left out by churches who deny them the right to be out and feel accepted by God at the same time so they end up turning away from God’s presence and you can’t really expect people who have been turned away from God’s presence to live in a godly manner.
How I Perceive the Bible for a More Relational Reading Experience: an introduction
Growing up in an Evangelical Covenant Church in Northern California and attending youth events at a Presbyterian church near my house, I knew that reading the Bible was something we were supposed to do, and many songs and rhymes were taught to help us learn about it. In high school, I developed a habit of reading through different books of the Bible about a chapter a day for about ten minutes every day before going to school, to which I added a brief four line prayer in a journal starting mid-senior year of high school when I began to have a difficult moral crisis and irrational thoughts of dread. This practice soothed the weird emotional nag on my conscience but as I went through my school day it felt like I could talk about God if They came up in English or history but rarely talked to God or dwelled on God in my thoughts and I never even really thought about what knowing God in a relational sense meant, let alone began that process, something that created major problems for me when I needed to discern whether the moral crisis was legitimate or not.
Over a year after that moral crisis period, I’m still struggling to find motivation for prayer and Bible reading outside of guilt and obligation, but I’ve begun to understand a few important ideas for perceiving scripture so that reading it can give us a better idea of discerning God’s voice and finding God’s presence.
The first principle I would like to emphasize is that the Bible is your friend, or rather a literary extension and distillation of God, the friend of man, as documented by various ancient peoples. Thus, you should get to know it deeply and slowly, and engage your emotions in the reading.
When I was in high school I tended to read the Bible a bit like a textbook I needed to skim for an assignment, reading over a chapter once and noting any salient moral points and confusing parts. This is a good start but it gives God little space to communicate with you and isn’t conducive for loving God. Instead, just like you don’t expect to learn everything about a new friend right away, don’t think you understand a passage just by reading it once. Find things that are interesting to you on a first reading and look into them deeper, maybe memorizing those passages if you feel led.
That said, if you are tired or just not willing for whatever irrational reason to study in depth or with great attention, go easy on yourself emotionally. One thing my mom tells me when I struggle to allow this to happen in my life is that if our imperfect human friends understand if we are tired and unable to pay full attention to what they have to say and still value our time, a perfect God must to an even greater degree understand what is going on in our minds and value our time regardless of how sharp we are. Following this line of thought, I have started many sessions of reading believing I could only get through a small section and being at peace with that only to have God carry me through reading two or three sections with thorough analysis. Such experiences will occur on tired days so long as you are open to the possibility of reading for longer than you might initially plan or expect yourself and work far better than days you push yourself beyond your perceived limits and consciously or subconsciously hate on yourself for being weaker than you would like to be.
Additionally, continuing on this line of thought, don’t worry yourself too much about how focused you are at first. There are times when I have a train of thought unrelated to what reading going on in my head and something about reading Bible passages slowly out loud allows me to come to a conclusion about that train of thought in ways I feel I may not otherwise have been able to while simply sitting and fixating on the thought. It may sound weird when people say the Bible reads you and is a person, but when you get into the text in depth this becomes apparent.
That said, while deep conversations with friends - be they human or divine - are important and life-giving, they should not be expected in every encounter. Sometimes we just need to sit and perceive. God is not just in these big miraculous events but also there in our everyday routines in different but equally important ways.
It might also be helpful to see reading the Bible as exercise in that you know you should do it regularly, you know it’s good for you and enjoyable, but something in you just doesn’t want to do it emotionally, and it feels more draining in theory than it is in practice, so you must build up good memories of it. Additionally, like with exercising, regularity in Bible reading is more important than intensity in healthy development, so start small to feel encouraged and gradually get bigger.

ok if it weren't for the sometimes toxic ideas about sexuality and gender in orthodoxy I could see more left-leaning people becoming converts to escape the individualistic marketing-obsessed stuff that goes down in fancy sound system projector-using protestant churches
that said if you’re ok with purgatorial (possibly temporary) hell live in Toledo, Baltimore, Seattle, or Tampa Florida you may find a Universalist Orthodox parish near you
Just want to raise awareness for the Chicago Torture Justice Center, the first and only organization in the US providing trauma recovery services for survivors of police violence. You can donate here.
Broke: Take what you want from Paul's letters and reject what you don't like
woke: Take Paul's letters in their proper cultural and historical context with understanding of their broader ideas and try your best to discern what is specifically for Rome, Galatia, Colossae, etc. in the 1st century vs what is for everyone
I'm not sure if this blog or your other blog is more appropriate than this. I was raised in a branch of Christianity that is very supersessionist (for your followers who may not know, that's the belief that the new covenant in Jesus has replaced God's relationship with the Jewish people and the Mosaic laws). I'm aware of the antisemitism that often stems from this interpretation, and I was wondering what other alternative interpretations are?
Hey yes hi, confronting antisemitism within Christianity is a deep passion of mine. Good on you for beginning the long work of uprooting supersessionist beliefs within yourself!
In short, alternatives to supersessionist views of Christianity and Judaism is to hold that
Jesus didn't replace the torah, and Christianity didn't "replace" Judaism -- Jesus cherished the torah and other Jewish writings as his own, letting them nourish and fuel his own ministry; and Christianity and Judaism are related but distinct religions that both faithfully relate to God; and
God's covenant with Christians doesn't replace God's covenant with the Jewish people -- both covenants are particular to particular communities, and can exist at the same time.
The rest of this post offers resources for learning and understanding these things.
My favorite resources on antisemitism and supersessionism within Christianity come from Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish professor who has dedicated much of her career to Christian-Jewish relationships. The core of what she hopes to teach Christians is this:
"Christian teaching need not malign Jewish tradition in order to make Jesus look good. I’m a Jew. I don’t worship Jesus as lord and savior, but I have spent my life studying him and being inspired by him and learning from him. He’s a splendid teacher! If I can see how profound and provocative he is without having to malign Judaism, surely Christians can do the same.”
Stuff from Levine:
My Amy-Jill Levine tag over on my other blog has some great quotations from her
This post full of resources for combatting antisemitism during Holy Week includes some from Levine that I highly recommend!
If you're able to read academic texts, her book The Bible with and without Jesus is also really cool -- but not the easiest read. Stick to lectures you can find for her online if you prefer stuff made to be easy for anyone to understand.
Other resources:
This article (link leads to google drive) about antisemitism in the Christian pulpit -- goes through the basics of how much supersessionist stuff gets preached even in "progressive" churches without people even noticing!
my antisemitism tag as a whole -- there's tons of good stuff in there, including commentary on the Pharisees as Pretty Cool, Actually, and Jesus's relationship to them
As you study, let me know if you have any further specific questions!
Anyone else have recommendations for resources on alternatives to supersessionist thinking?
yknow it would be really nice if everyone into like cryptic culture and ~cottagecore~ and all that actually like....gave a shit abt appalachia
like i people don't INTEND to commodify or sensationalize us, but every time i see people hyping up cryptids i always get the unpleasant reminder that people only care abt my state for ~mothman~ or to conveniently stereotype in debates abt gun control. please please if you have spent any time learning abt cryptids, also learn abt wv coal miners, who work a dying industry because it's the only job a cycle of Incredible poverty makes accessible to them, have had absolutely no protections against COVID enforced, despite not only working in incredibly cramped, dangerous positions, but Already being at high risk for respiratory diseases like black lung. learn abt the governor who was reelected in the midst of all the other major politics last year, the only millionaire in west virginia, who at one point owed 7 billion dollars in fines for mine safety violations that he still hasn't paid and whose family STILL owns most mines in the state.
that's just two things! in one state!!! the opioid epidemic and the steady defending of education and the absolutely abysmal conditions that people live in across appalachia are staggering in their weight. if you love cryptid culture i am begging you, please please love and care for and talk abt the people who created it and keep it going.
if you have ever bought merchandise abt how much u love the flatwoods monster or w/ever, please please also consider supporting one of these organizations (these are mostly wv-centered because it's where i live, i encourage ppl from other states to add links if they have them!):
Holler Health Justice, a queer BIPOC-led nonprofit that provides access to abortion, free EC, and other mutual aid across Appalachia
Appalachian Mountain Advocates, which works across Appalachia to shift towards clean energy and end fossil fuels and fracking
Mountain Justice, which works in West Virginia to fight environmental damage, in particular mountain top removal
WV Free, a group that advocates reproductive rights in west virginia
Fairness WV, a group that advocates lgbt+ rights in west virginia
WV Can't Wait, a political group that focuses on helping & promoting candidates across west virginia who want economic change
This is literally the only time on the internet I’ve seen anyone not blame poor people in rural areas for being poor? “They work in coal mines and they’re uneducated, ew” Do you understand how poverty works?? Do you?? Anwyay @pechebeche mad props for sticking up for Appalachia. I have been yelling about it for years but nobody on ANY side of the political balance beam wants to listen.
Foxfire - in 1966, a bunch of high school kids in Southern Appalachia (Georgia) created a magazine featuring interviews from their family and community members about Appalachian culture and history. Now, not only has the magazine creation been passed down from generation to generation of high school students, but there’s an entire center and foundation for Foxfire.
What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia - don’t read Hillbilly Elegy; read this book instead. It genuinely changed my life and my understanding of this nation. This is a “why didn’t they teach us THIS in school” book filled with important knowledge, defense of minority groups in Appalachia, dispelling of myths... seriously it’s such a good book.
How Half of America Lost Its F***ing Mind - this article is less Appalachia-centric, but it offers a pretty balanced look at why rural counties glowed red in 2016 and 2020 (note: this article was written back in early 2016, when liberals never fully believed Trump would get any votes, but the also liberal author of the article knew more than he thought he did). Again, one of the few articles on the Internet that doesn’t use “uneducated” as an insult.
Gone Home: Race and Roots through Appalachia - this book was filled with interviews from black Americans who grew up in Appalachian coal mining towns. Fair warning, the editing and formatting in this book is fully atrocious, but the information is still insanely valuable!

Dyslexia Friendly Ao3 Skin (or at least an attempt at)
I've been slowly working at a dyslexia friendly skin following the design suggestions I've found in the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide.
You can find it here with all the instructions to install it
It is still a work in progress and I'm begging for feedback so that I can make it better for everyone.
To Do List:
A dark mode is on the way. I'll post it on the link I've just posted, so if you find this post in a few months you'll be able to find it.
As soon as I can I aim to make the code more ordered, with lots of comments and a guide to change stuff for people who know nothing about css, so you can personalize it for your needs.
More color combinations.
Implement more stuff you ask me. I'm designing this by just following a guide, but it might be wrong in some areas and there might be more stuff that's good to add.
I’ve updated the link to have a guide on how to customize the skin even for people who know nothing about css!
Next thing I’m working on is going to be the dark mode (which I know people are waiting for. I’ll publish it on the same ao3 work in that link as a new chapter, so if you want to be reminded just follow that work)
The link is still the same: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30918077/chapters/76349072 in chapter 2 you’ll find the customization guide for people who know nothing about css and in chapter 3 the dark mode skin!
i’m sorry to have to make another donation post but .. here we are, we basically had to skip the internet bill and barely got any groceries this month in order to make rent. if anyone can spare a few dollars i’m trying to raise $70 for food to hopefully last us two weeks, the internet can wait and i’ll use cell hotspot in the meantime.

Hey all, today is Trans Day Of Visibility so I wanted to make another one of these posts just in case:
I’m a transgender butch lesbian and communist organizer who’s been unemployed for almost three months straight now, and unfortunately I’m being hit with a lot of costs on a pretty constant basis. Even though I feel hopeful about my chances of getting another job right now, I’m still consistently worried about medication (that’s what I get for being on so many I guess) or food.
If folks are feeling generous today and want to make this TDOV a little easier for a struggling tran, I would deeply appreciate spreading this around or shooting me a couple dollars.
Please keep spreading this around! I’m out of my depression and ADHD medication and in a real dark place, I’m try gonna get a new prescription at my next appointment but I don’t know how my doctor will feel about that since I’ve been going through so much trauma lately and we’re not actually sure how the meds have been affecting me. I don’t think any of it could cost more than $40 or $50, so I really hate to ask but anything helps at the moment!
after listening to a lot of gay & lesbian Christian people talk about stuff I’m increasingly realizing that there’s a lot unique about the bisexual Christian experience that their perspectives don’t cover

turkey and azerbaijan are attacking armenia right now, and it’s 1915 all over again because the world is distracted and people are too busy wondering if they’re gonna live or die, and who gives a shit about my country anyway? my mum told me to tell my friends and explain to them what’s happening and that we are the victims in this war because azerbaijan is spreading lies and people are believing their lies and i told her, what good is that going to do? do you think anyone’s going to come to our aid? is russia going to help us? is america? is england? erdogan said they will finish what their ancestors started, and he means genocide. he means ethnic cleansing. he means to massacre every last one of us. and in doing so admitted to the very same thing turkey has spent 105 years denying. i don’t know who to tell and what good telling people will do because we’re a small, insignificant country, and we have nothing to offer to the people in power, the handful who rule the world. so i sit here with my pain and i feel helpless. i know there’s twitter threads and links to petitions and people being urged to contact their senators, and sorry if im being pessimistic, but azerbaijan has been attacking us for the last 22 years, and though we defend ourselves, we can’t do anything to stop them. they’ve violated ceasefires (and geneva conventions) multiple times. i don’t think they’ll rest until every last one of us is dead.
we just want peace. we just want to live peacefully. we’re not asking for a lot here.
Watching this happen I’ve been so scared there is going to be another genocide and nobody would notice. My whole life I’ve hated how forgettable armenian people seem to be to the world. Protect armenian people or rot, please don’t turn a blind eye to us again. And same as above, reblog or unfollow.
here are some cold hard facts for those interested:
1. after losing the war in 1994, the az government spent the next nearly 30 years on a) dehumanizing armenians, b) blaming armenians and losing the war for the terrible socioeconomic state of the people in this oil-rich country while president and his family steal all of the money their oil produces, c) pushing armenophobic propaganda on the population since kindergarten age, d) oppressing and humiliating the other ethnic minorities living on its territories, e) regularly violating the ceasefire of 1994 whenever the internal situation get tense and the ppl get angry, f) selectively sending the youths of said ethnic minorities to the bloodiest parts of the frontline whenever said ceasefire violations happen, g) suppressing free speech, arresting journalists, harassing and threatening those who dare to voice their discontent, etc.
2. in early 1920s, josef stalin, in order to appease the new turkish “republic” and its leader ataturk, with the hopes of using turkey as the base for spreading the communist revolution further into asia, passed artsakh (also known as nagorno karabagh) with its 95% ethnic armenian population onto the new created turkic azerbaijan republic (a country that did not exist before 1918, that’s what newly created means), despite the opposition from the people of the region in question and the republic of armenia.
3. during the 70 or so years that artsakh was part of the azerbaijan republic as an autonomous region, the gov of azerbaijan did everything they could to a) suppress the development of the region, b) change the demographic of the region by moving turkic population to artsakh
4. in 1980s, the people of artsakh, utilizing their rights stipulated in the soviet constitution, petitioned both moscow and baku to be allowed to reunite with armenia. as a response to this, the azerbaijan government started large-scale repressions against the organizers and activists of the reunification movement. arrests on made up charges, threats and violence followed (more info on all that in the link provided below)
5. the people of artsakh then held a referendum as was their right under soviet constitution, and more than 90% of it’s population voted in favor of seceding from the azerbaijan republic. the response to this were the anti-armenian pogroms in baku and sumgait ( https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-01-18-mn-305-story.html)
Alexander Gulanerian heard the mob pounding down the hall seconds before his door was broken down and they stormed in, brandishing knives, b
6. all this grew into the first artsakh war, which azerbaijan lost, as mentioned in point 1.
to sum it up: artsakh was never a part of the independent azerbaijan republic, during it’s brief 70-year forced az control its indigenous armenian people were oppressed via various government policies, the people of artsakh deserve to live a free and happy life in their homeland, free of threats and fear of annihilation that is sure to happen if azerbaijan takes control of the region
to them, it’s just a territory and they want that territory without the people.
for further reading, check out this comprehensive timeline of the artsakh history up to 2017( when it was written)
For centuries the sacred khachkars of Djulfa stood tall along the banks of the River Aras — hulking and ornately carved 16th-century headsto
while you are at it, read up on the armenian genocide and keep in mind that turkey, specifically for this war, moved syrian jihadists to azerbaijan to fight against armenia and artsakh. read up on the kind of internationally banned ammunition azerbaijan has been using against the civilians in artsakh capital, and then maybe make your judgement.
oh, and if anyone tries to frame this as an islam vs christianity thing, send them to hell, regardless of the side they claim to support, bc this isn’t it.
spreading awareness is HUGE because azeris are spreading lies (mainly on twitter bc apparently thats the only social media they’re allowed to use atm? i haven’t verified this but it checks out with the dictator in powet lol) and it’s really really really important for us to counter their lies with FACTS. like there’s far few of us and we don’t have any bots lmao so it’s really hard to get people to listen to us.
cardi b apparently made a post about it, talking about how there’s a genocide going on in armenia, and azeris started harassing her so she sort of backtracked and said something like “i didn’t know there was two sides to this” and like it’s not the only person they’ve done this to!
this video on twitter actually explains their tactics (the girl in the video is basically translating azeri post) how they target people who speak out in support of armenia and make them rescind their support.
so yeah. it’s important for us to fight against the misinformation. and i think i have no respect for any armenian person who chooses to not engage because the internet is our battlefield. this is where we fight because it’s the least we can do. (note i said armenian person, because i don’t think its fair to ask this of people who don’t have a personal stake in this war).
System of a Down just released 2 new songs, their first new music in 15 years, to raise money for the Armenia Fund. Go to their Facebook page or https://systemofadown.bandcamp.com/ to purchase the songs for a donation as little as $2 USD or more of your choice
FYI: The US Government is not advertising this, because of course not, but enrollment for 2021 Obamacare opened today, and you have to be enrolled by December 15 or you are out of luck. It's really easy to apply. healthcare.gov
