I keep saying there are literally millions of good reasons to wear a respie in public, and people keep ignoring me.
Can unfortunately confirm this is 100% real. Sources and more info below.
EFF's Threat Lab used static code analysis to confirm Meta deployed facial recognition to millions of Ray-Ban smart glasses. The "Name Tag"
TL;DR: On June 4, 2026, the Electronic Frontier Foundation published “Move Fast, Surveil Things,” confirming through static code analysis that Meta has already deployed facial recognition code to millions of Ray-Ban smart glasses. The internal “Name Tag” feature converts every face in view into a 2,048-number faceprint array and matches it against a stored database. An EFF researcher activated the feature in debug mode and watched the glasses detect a known face in real time. Meta’s spokesperson says this is just “evidence of exploration.” Exploration doesn’t ship to millions of devices. This is staging for launch, and internal documents show Meta planned to flip the switch while privacy groups were too busy to fight back. ...You don’t need a central database when every user builds their own local faceprint collection. The faces still get scanned. The biometric data still gets created. Meta just outsources the storage to your phone, and the legal liability to you.
-via State of Surveillance, June 7, 2026. Emphasis mine.
But good news! There are things you can do to protect yourself and your community. As quoted from the article:
What You Can Do
Assume You’re Being Scanned
If someone near you is wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses, treat it like a running camera, because it is. The small LED indicator that’s supposed to signal recording can be covered with tape, and Meta’s “always enabled” mode processes video without activating it [6]. The Nearby Glasses app can detect Meta Ray-Bans via Bluetooth.
Lock Down Your Meta Profiles
Name Tag matches faces against Meta platform data. If you have Facebook or Instagram accounts, set your profile photo to something that isn’t your face. Make your accounts private. Better yet, consider whether you need them at all. Every photo of your face on Meta’s platforms is training data for identifying you later.
Support the Legal Pushback
The EFF, ACLU, and EPIC are fighting this on legal, legislative, and technical fronts. Texas’s investigation proves state-level enforcement works: Meta paid $1.4 billion last time Texas came knocking over biometrics. Push for biometric privacy laws in your state. Illinois and Texas showed the way.
Don’t Buy the Glasses
Every pair sold expands the surveillance network. Meta has shipped millions already. Each one is a camera pointed at everyone else. If you own a pair, understand that the facial recognition code is on your device right now, and Meta can activate it with a software update whenever they decide the political moment is right.
-via State of Surveillance, June 7, 2026. Emphasis mine. And remember that for an undocumented person in the US right now, facial recognition spyware identifying them could be the difference between life and death.
Just days after a damning WIRED report exposed that Meta had quietly embedded facial recognition technology (FRT) code into millions of phon
Hey good news they're already quietly removed the code!!!!
Public outcry matters!!!
But still don't buy the glasses, they can add the code back in by pushing an invisible update whenever they please

So the big pool thing. Did they not chlorinate it or what? Did they not know you have to chlorinate it? I'm really baffled about what the fuck even happened there. SURELY they chlorinated it.
#Algae in the pipes#This isn’t the first time this has happened it’s become victim to new pond syndrome every time it’s been refilled in recent years#And they are treating the water#(Hydrogen peroxide not chlorine)#It shouldn’t have chlorine in it it’s massive and would fuck with the wildlife#The project itself is incredibly obnoxious but the pool turning green isn’t really an orange specific problem
Oh okay good. I was terrified that their level of incompetence, which is already comical, had jumped to truly incomprehensible. I am so relieved to learn that this makes sense and it's only their twitterposting that makes them seem unhinged about it.
See, you also don't want hydrogen peroxide in the water, either.
The administration either got rid of or didn't listen to people who could explain the algae problem, and decided that the problem was because other administrations were just stupid and didn't know how to take care of the pool, and also saw an opportunity for grifting some money.
So they painted the bottom of the pool dark blue, which absorbed more heat from the sun and made the algae bloom faster than ever. So they dumped hydrogen peroxide in it, which only killed the algae around the edges and also made the new paint job peel.
So folks were taking pieces of the bottom as souvenirs so now we have National Guard and deputies from several states who are just arresting people for as little as putting their hands in the pool.
Oh HEY so like, the Obama administration renovated the reflecting pool to draw from the Potomac rather than municipal water, and installed an extensive filtration system, and APPARENTLY at some point in the last 10 years Trump ripped it out or stopped maintaining it, and look, algae.
Everything stupid that they do is such a great metaphor for everything else stupid that they've done
It's very likely that the paint was not appropriate for the usage to start with, and that that was on purpose. It's a standard shady really-the-mob contractor thing to guarantee more work, I'm told. It's quite possible that himself agreed to it, even, because he gives no fucks about national monuments, but does like handing out favors to friends, like this no-bid indefinite contract.
McDonalds ice cream machine arse groundskeeping
One of my friend's husband has a business building pools. His very technical response was:
“Donald’s trump mate who applied the surface is not very good.”
Some ducklings have now been spotted dead in the water from the hydrogen peroxide
this is amazing 🐈 ♥️♥️

Anti-Book Banning Bingo
We made this for an event with the Writers' Guild of Alberta to fight the book bans in our province. Feel free to use it, and if you want to fill in the "support a trans author" square, consider becoming a paid patron of Making Queer History!
@dragon-in-a-fez I bet you have some Thoughts about this. (Sorry if this is out of line... feel free to ignore if so.)
my favourite (derogatory) thing on there is "find out about a school board meeting". like you don't even have to go. just like. know about it. it will help fight censorship if you are aware of an event where someone could potentially try to censor something but maybe they don't and you won't know anyway because you didn't go
Guys I don’t know how to tell you this, but folks don’t really care if you, as an adult, read To Kill a Mockingbird or whatever. What they are doing is things like:
1. Coming into MY GOSH DANG LIBRARY, going into the kids’ section, and taking books with titles like “things you are too afraid to ask your parents” or “julian is a mermaid” and either hiding them or straight up stealing them
2. Trying to get teachers and librarians labeled as sex offenders for having books like the above available for children to read
3. Forming giant groups to heavily pressure schools and libraries into removing this content
4. Trying to strip funding from schools and libraries who have The Bad Content
You, as an adult, do not have to rely on your school or library to carry a book. You can buy your own copy or pirate it. But for kids, they just completely lose access to this information.
Hey guys! Super interesting criticisms. This is a bingo sheet that was meant to be completed within a two hour meeting so those constraints led the making of it. I can't make someone go to a school board meeting, because we have a two hour time limit for the event.
Also it is an absolutely wild point to make that reading banned books is useless. It is actually vital that adults know exactly what is in the books people are trying to ban. Book banners share salacious portions of books specifically to take advantage of people's ignorance and make books seem more sexual/controversial then they are. Understanding the context of a sexual scene, or reading the whole of To Kill A Mockingbird, is not useless. Also when you look at these details you can find connecting threads between banned books.
Like in Alberta, many of the banned books discuss sexual abuse, which is important to know because fighting bans against sexually explicit material looks different than fighting bans against "critical race theory" in books.
Anyways, hope you did something today to fight book bans! I know I have.

yk guys I think a lot of ppl when arguing against the death penalty go for a like "people don't deserve death, etc" view and I get why ppl argue for that I rly do! but it doesn't matter. I don't trust the government to do it, I don't trust them to decide who should die, I don't trust them to determine who is mentally competent, I don't trust them to not be bigoted and discriminatory in their practices, I don't trust them to have the right people, I don't trust them to execute it in a humanitarian way. and I've had discussions with ppl who otherwise have similar viewpoints to me in many ways but can think of people they think deserve to die, and I think if abolishing the death penalty is like, a super important cause to u the same way it is to me, the argument u use shouldn't be "well these people deserve to live" (although in some cases I think yeah the death penalty is done to people who totally don't "deserve it") because that's so subjective, it should be "do you trust the government to do it?" like, do you trust the people who cant even fill potholes on your road to determine who should and should not live
I will never shy away from the word goon. goon is the only way to describe a particular type of henchman, lackey, or thug. look at these guys. they're goons.

The best part of that video is that the owner found the ORIGINAL plush later on the beach and took another video with it after their grandmother stitched it back up
I love the death grip after the toy was fixed up. Lessons were learned. Try to steal it this time you fucking bird. I dare you.
