Violet is going on her trip to Montserrat Outpost with her squad. There is one issue: Keir can't come, and now she needs to find a dog sitter at the last minute, and everyone she truly trusts to watch him properly is going on the trip.

That is, until a certain broody Wingleader is recommended to her. And he, fighting his feelings for the silver-haired dog mom, reluctantly agrees to watch Basgaith’s four-legged menace for the week she is gone. Chapter 33:

Xaden passes one of the two mugs over Keir’s head to me. “Coffee. Sgaeyl says you haven't slept. Been held up in your kitchen.”

“It's none of Sgaeyl’s business if I'm sleeping or doing something like night cooking,” I snap. “But thanks.” I take the cup, and Keir gives Xaden a look that says he is insulted that he didn't bring him anything. And the half-bark and paw at Xaden’s leg makes it known to him that Keir isn't happy he didn't get anything.

“The last thing your ass needs is caffeine,” Xaden tells my sweet boy. And Keir lets out a huff, sneeze. Why does Xaden look like he is reliving a nightmare that stars my sweet baby?

As I take a sip while Xaden and Keir argue, he looks like he has had a full eight hours of sleep and a vacation since yesterday. “I bet you're sleeping like Keir once he slips into a food coma.”

“Stop telling Sgaeyl about my sleeping habits,” I grumble to Tairn.

“Im not dignifying that demand with a response.”

“Andarna is both Keir’s and my favorite.”

Chapter 8: Yay, Mama’s Home!!!

Keir’s POV

Dang, what is Moving Tree’s issue?! All I did was try his crapy food; Mama’s tastes way, way better. Ugh, now I might really have to bite his ass come the next morning. Ugh, I miss Mama, and it's only been four fluffing days! Anyways, I have to go potty, and Moving Tree is about to fall asleep; it's only like what, almost eleven.

Garrick’s POV

The fluffy little shit not only blocked me from sealing the deal with Zee, the blue hair cutie, but he ate the rest of my fucking dinner! And Bodhi was no help! He was the one who pushed my food closer to him!

I feel a weight jump on my bed, and I turn to face away from Keir. Nope, I'm still upset with him.

Huff, bark bark, grrr

I shut my eyes tighter and hope he gets the hint and goes away for now. Not like I can stay mad at him for long; I'll forgive him come sunrise. The dog, not Bodhi.

“Ooff,” I grunt out as he pounces on me. “Dude, the hell?!”

Keir whines and runs to the door, prancing in place as he looks at it and back to me.

Great, just fucking great. He has to go out.

“Ok, ok,” I say as I get up and stretch. “Just let me get some pants on, and I'll take you out one last time for the night. Shouldn't have eaten all that extra food. And my extra, I mean, my dinner.”

Chapter 32:

A hand that brushes the back of my neck and then rests on the back of my chair drags me out of my thoughts as I glare at the man who is now sitting next to me. Dain hasn't stopped glaring at him and making snide remarks since he showed up. Mira is no better. Keeping an eye on Xaden and every little move he makes. And me? Well, I can't seem to keep my eyes to myself, and I'm questioning him on why he thought leaving Keir with Garrick unsupervised was his best option. Fucking Xaden showed up late for whatever reason and made sure to sit next to me. No matter the room he enters, there is so much tension that you can cut it with a dagger. No, I am going to ignore how some of that energy brushes over my skin like a caress each time our eyes meet. I am aware of every breath he takes as he sits next to me, not in my personal bubble but in my personal bubble at the same time.

“We are going to consider this time as your Battle Brief,” Mira continues, giving Ridoc a somewhat annoyed glare as he gets back in his seat.

“This morning's flight was about a quarter of the patrol we'd regularly go on. So that means that we'd just be arriving back right about now and report to the commander. But for the sake of killing time, since we will be the reaction flight for this afternoon, let's pretend we'd come across a newly fortified enemy outpost crossing our border.”

Mira turns to the map and pins a small red flag near one of the peaks. “Let's say it's right here.”

“Wait, so are we supposed to pretend it just popped up overnight?” Emery asks.

“For argument’s sake, third year,” Mir says as she narrows her gaze. “Yes.”

Emery sits up straighter as my sister stares at him.

“I like this game,” another Montserrat rider says from the end of the table.

Chapter 7: Keir and Uncle Moving Tree (Uncle Garrie):

Ok, Xaden left about an hour ago, right after dinner, because that was as soon as he was able to leave once he had all matters settled and gave leadership a small heads-up so they couldn't stop him. However, I don't know who in their right mind would tell Sgaely or Tairn no, and after that mess, I have Keir all set up in my room. He is sniffing around as he paces, taking it all in. Not because my best friend didn't trust me to get Keir’s food. Geez, you break into a private kitchen one time to test out some snacks, and suddenly you can't go in anymore.

“Pretty sweet, eh?”

He sneezes and shakes his head, then huffs at me. “Well, excuse me, prince.” I roll my eyes. “Sorry, I don't have a bigger room. At least I have my own toilet.”

He gives me a look.

“I doubt the furry hatchling will need use for that, traveler,” Chradh says.

“I could teach him, you know, to pee in the toilet bowl?”

“You struggle with that, Traveler.” I can feel Chradh roll his eyes at me.

“Hey, I don't miss that much!”

“Then why do your bedmates and den mates complain about pee on the seat?”

“It was one time, Chradh!”

Chapter 6: Wait Broody, where are you going?!

Fucking hell, it's only the third day since Violence left, and I can't fucking focus or even fucking sleep.

“Is that due to the normal reasons you can't sleep, or the fact you can't keep your mind off the Violent One, and if she is getting closer to the squad leader, among the usual thoughts you gave of her?” Sgaely cuts in.

“I don't know how many times I have suffered because of you and Tairn’s bond or the beds I have ended up in.”

“You never complained before. Perhaps you are frustrated, as the humans say the Violent One is. You haven't taken anyone to bed or been in another bed since you laid eyes on her.”

“Grrr, not now.”

“Only proving me right, Wingleader.”

“Whether or not Violence is getting close to Dain fucking Aetos isn't the reason I can't sleep. It's due to Violence’s ‘white noise maker’.”

“Keep telling yourself that.”

I grip my hair as I wait for the ‘white noise maker’ to go to the fucking bathroom. Seriously, why is he talking so fucking long?! He woke me up before the fucking sunrise by punching me in the face, I might add. I think that I might have a new scar or at least a black eye.

“Better than when he hit you in your genitals,” Sgaely takes this chance to remind me how he woke me up after the bath incident.

Chapter 5: I think this place could use a touch-up:

Keir’s POV

I can't believe that broody gibbed me a bath last night! The fluffing nerve!

Only Mama can gib me one. Geez, you try to have a relaxing spaw treatment, and you are punished for no good fluffing reason! Thus, I am refusing to meet Broody again today except for meals or till I gib bored and go crash his classes. Whichever comes first.

I decided to try my luck and head over to GG’s lair to see if I could bug her. I'll even try not to chew the sofa…..

this time. It's gonna be really fluffing hard but Keir is willing to gib it a try.

“Did you hear that the General Sorrengail and Colonel Aetos were called away to the Calldyr for a few days?” I hear a random guard say to his partner.

“Ya, I did,” they say. “General Sorrengail reinforced her wards after what her daughter pulled during the final trial of the squad battle.”

Blah, blah, blah is all I hear after they said that. Fluff, that means I can't go into the lair. I normally could if she were there, cause I would cry and cry till her aides and guards at her door begged her to let me in to stop the noise. If it were only up to her, I would cry till the overgrown lizards came home, and she still wouldn't gib into me’s.

Chapter 4: Wait there’s a free Mud Bath?!

And the silence on the other side gives me my answer. I don't fucking care why those asses are mad and shooting me glares during this meeting of all third-year leadership cadets.

But I can't help but feel some of those are aimed at my companion. And where the fuck did he get that fucking boot from, he is carrying around d like a trophy?

“Man, what was up with those Infantry bastards?” Garrick asks as we make our way to meet up with Bodhi.

“No fucking clue and I don't fucking care.”

Garrick shrugs as he folds his arms behind his head. “It's like someone took a shit in their boots.”

We continue to talk about random stuff as we meet Bodhi.

“What's up?” my cousin greets in a mock salute.

“Other than infantry being bitches?” Garrick jokes, and the furry fucker tilts his head and whines as he looks around.

“Different kind of bitches, boy,” Bodhi laughs at him, causing the dog to grumble.

“Nice day, isn't it?” Bodhi talks as we walk.

“I don't, Bo, I think a certain someone might like it better if a certain silver-haired-”

“Finish that sentence, and you will regret it when I take you to the mat.”

“Oh, please, would you. Do you have any daggers that I can take from… ouch,” Garrick rubs the back of his head after I hit him. “You are no fun, you know that?”

“Never claimed to be,” I fight the smirk that wants to grace my lips. Fuck, Garrick and Bodhi always make me laugh even when I don't want to.

“How is your custody time going?” Bodhi smirks, bumping into my shoulder.

“The furry fucker keeps trying to take my bed.”

“Hey, he is used to cuddles, from what I hear. Isn't that right?” Bodhi encourages the four-legged menace. And I shoot him a look to tell him to knock it off.

“Maybe he would be better behaved if someone gave him his kisses right away instead of making him beg for them.” Garrick jokes.

“No,” I deadpan.

Chapter 3: I thinks I need a new collection:

It's horrible, just horrible. Mama has only been gone for not even a day, and everything is just horrible. I can't say it any other way. First, Broody refuses to gib me my kisses so I can eat. Then the broody fluffler won't share his big bed with me. Wants me to sleep on the floor like I am some kind of animal.

So fluffing rude!

I had to sneak both Marbh and myself into his bed, only to be rudely woken up and forced to sleep at the foot of the bed. Broody says that is the only compromise he would make. I am not allowed at the head of the bed with all the fluffly pillows.

How fluffing rude, again!

And out of fluffing protest, I refuse to be seen with him, except for meal time. I know in my puppy heart that if I don't show up, then fluffing Moving Tree would eat all of my fluffing food!

Chapter 2: The First Figh- I mean Night:

Fucking hell, Violence hasn’t been gone for more than a few hours, and I already miss her, if only so she will take back her ‘child’.

“Oh, so is that the only reason you are going to admit to about missing the Silver one?”

“Not now,” I groan down the bond.

The Iron Squad left shortly after formation for the six-hour flight to Montserrat, and the worst part…

“Other than the Silver One being gone?”

“I was going to say that we have to listen to Markham do Battle Brief by himself and his condescending attitude. Without Devera there to act as a buffer between us and his better-than-you attitude.”

Devera really made this bullshit joke of a fucking class tolerable, but she is with Violence.

On the bright side, the furry fucker seems to hate the scribe as much as I do. And I try not to look for the splash of Silver hair in the first-year section that I know will not be there, and ignore the ache in my heart at that thought. And Aetos better keep his fucking distance from her as they fly. Wait, what if they are flying next to each other? Talking most of the way? Getting close again. No, Tairn would never let Aetos’s dragon closer enough for that. Right? RIGHT? And Liam knows to get in the middle of the two of that fucking happens. At least I have the dagger and he…

“Wingleader! Pay attention to the liar while you are in the ‘class’. The furry hatchling is doing a better job than you.”

Chapter 1: Good News, Bad News:

Violet’s squad had won Squad Battle but poor sweet baby boy Keir can't come. So Violet needs to find a last-minute puppy sitter for her baby. Who can she turn too when all the people who like Keir and she can trust are either going the trip, in a different quadrant, or too busy or old to take care of Keir for a whole week.

Liam had an idea on who can do it.

Chapter 31:

Of course Dain and the other upper cadets are minimally affected, if their posture is anything to go by.

I can't stop but worry about Keir since the moment we took off, and Basgaith wasn't even a hundred feet behind us.

Gods, I hope Keir is fine. This is the longest we’ve been apart, and even then we were in the same place. What if he goes on a hunger strike? Or what if Xaden doesn't follow my instructions? Or what if my sweet boy gets sick or hurt? Or….

“Everything will be fine, Silver one,” Tairn tries his best to claim my mind.

“Your Furry Hatchling will be ok while you are away. Might do you both some good to be apart.”

“We haven't been apart for more than a few hours since he was a puppy. And Keir needs to…”

“Again, this will be good for you. Not like there is a way to get him on my back. And no, he will not climb on me a second time, Silver One. That was a one-time thing. I cannot channel my full power to you once you can keep your seat and keep him from falling off.”

“What if there was a way to keep Keir on your back without you using your magic?”

Tairn hums before the bond goes quiet.

Chapter 30:

“Tap out!” Rhiannon screams as a rider from Second Wing fights to drag himself forward on the mat, as Liam holds in a leg lock. Keir is barking up a storm in his own encouragement, tail wagging so much that his whole butt is shaking with it.

I can't help but agree with my sweet boy, and I'm sure that if I had a tail, it would mirror his as the excitement of today’s matches reaches a fever pitch.

It's the last challenge of the mat portion of the squad battle, and the crowd pushes at our backs. At least Keir is beside me, so I don't have to struggle as much to keep from falling onto the mat. A few snaps, my sweet boy gives those who are a bit overzealous in shoving me, makes them back off, and gives us room to breathe.

Good puppy.

After the two events, our squad is in seventh out of twenty-four on the leaderboard, but if Liam. Keir barks at me and gives me a look as if he knows what I am thinking. Sorry, baby, I meant to say when Liam wins, we’ll jump to third.

“We would have been higher on the board if you had just let me hold you in place during the sky race Silver One.”

“And what good would that have done me?”

“Not have the slowest time in your squad or have me live with the humiliation of that time. I am a might war dragon and a descendant of the-”

“Of the cunning Dubhmandinn line.

Son of Murtcuideam and Fiaclanfuil, I know, I know you, overgrown curmudgeon. I am pretty sure I have bruises on my ass from landing so hard from when you threw me back into the saddle from when I landed on the divot.”

“And then face the added shame of having my rider die by falling from her seat, which was an easy fix if you only let me use my magic to keep you in place, in a laughable race. Be thankful that this ‘overgrown curmudgeon’ kept catching you.”

“Don't worry, Violet, I think it's great that you are keeping grumpy old Tairn’s reflexes sharp by falling off so much and having him catch you,” Andarna beams down the bond, causing Tairn to grumble, and I can hear his eyeroll.
