In honor of the new year, here is my simple tutorial for setting up and maintaining a language journal. I’ve made 3 so far using this method for spanish, french, and italian because it’s so simple. Disfruta y espero que logres sus metas de lengua este año! <3

A déteminant is a word that introduces a noun in a sentence, like determiners and articles in English. As such, it is always followed by a noun, although in some cases, the two words will be separated by an (or more) adjective.

There are several types of déteminants in French:

Déterminant défini (Defined article): Introduces a known noun (like “the” in English) – le, la, l’, les, du, au, des, aux

E.g. : la pomme – the apple

Déterminant indéfini (Indefinite article): Introduces an unknown noun (like “a” in English) – un, une, des, chaque, plusieurs, tout, toute…

E.g. : un enfant – a child

Déterminant partitive (Partitive article): Introduces a noun that cannot be counted (such as sand, rain, etc.) – du, de l’, de la, des

E.g. : du sucre – sugar

Déterminant numeral (Numeral article): Indicates the quantity of a noun (usually through numbers) – un, une, deux, cinq, cent, mille…

E.g.: deux amoureux – two lovers

Déterminant possessif (Possessive article): Indicates possession (like “my” in English) – mon, ton, son, ma, ta, sa, notre, votre, leur, mes, tes, ses, nos, vos, leurs

E.g. : tes voisins – your neighbours

Déterminant démonstratif (Demonstrative article): Introduces a noun that is present in the context (like “this” in English) – ce, cet, cette, ces

E.g. : cette maison – this house

As we’re in the middle of summer and a lot of us have time to read, I thought it would be great to list all the great french books I know and I’ve read if you want to practice french or read french books!! (or just if you don’t have books to read now) note : the list is faaar from being complete !

Nous trois ou rien (2015)

If you only watch one of the films on this list, please watch this one. It’s the most recent one that I’ve seen but I can’t even describe how much I love this movie. Best French movie I’ve ever watched.

Le Premier Jour du reste de ta vie (2008)

Really nice movie about a French family.

Les Intouchables (2011)

This movie is so popular and well known but it’s great and definitely not overrated. Most French learners have probably seen it, but if you haven’t I would highly recommend it.

 La Haine (1995)

This is an older film compared to the others on this list but it’s a classic. It is a lot darker than the other movies, though, so if you’re into more light hearted/comedic films then then skip this one.

Jean de Florette + Manon des Sources (takes place in the 1930s, tragic story about 2 families, that plot twist tho) 

Naissance des pieuvres (teen love, a girl falls for another girl) 

Jeune & Jolie (nsfw, might be triggering for some people!!, a girl has sex for the first time, it’s very unpleasant and then she starts to sleep with men for money)

Le prénom (choosing the wrong name for your baby might end up like in this movie)

Tomboy (the title says everything! very good film!)

17 filles (17 high school girls decide to get pregnant at the same time)

Nathalie… (a woman wants a prostitute to sleep with her husband because she wants to find out if he’s really able to cheat on her)

La famille Bélier (lots of singing, about a girl and her family - everyone is deaf except for that girl, her dream is to sing but her family isn’t that supportive at first, also involves teen love and a latex allergy)

Respire (2 best friends who don’t stay best friends for the entire film and things escalate)

La cérémonie (lesbian vibes, a woman who doesn’t tell anyone that she cannot read and write gets into trouble, a bit bloody at the end)

L’homme de Rio (old movie, adventure and love in Rio de Janeiro, very cute main actress)

Les demoiselles de Rochefort (movie about 2 sisters, lots of singing and dancing)

Paulette (a racist granny starts to deal with drugs and turns into a nice person, awesome comedy)

Dans la maison (a high school student writes stories about the mother of his buddy and it escalates)

8 femmes (lesbians, bisexuals, drama, a dead man, nice clothes, takes place in the 50ies)

Swimming Pool (you see boobs sometimes, a British writer spends a few days in the South of France and writes about mysterious things that happen there)

Sagan (a biopic about Françoise Sagan, dramatic and a bit gay)

Le placard (a guy pretends to be gay so he doesn’t lose his job)

Poltergay (gay disco ghosts from the 70ies mess up a man’s life and relationship)

Une nouvelle amie (great movie about a trans woman)

Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain (y’all know this one)

Belles familles (family drama about a house and feelings, a man falls for his very young step sister)

La femme d’à côté (a man discovers that his new neighbour is his ex girlfriend, a lot of amour fou, sad film, dramatic)

Le dernier Métro (a Jewish theater director hides in his theater and his wife falls for an actor, during WW2, nice clothes, 2 gay characters (not main characters but still…))

L’enfer (1994 version) (a jealous man turns his wife’s life into a real nightmare, very interesting film)

L’homme qu’on aimait trop (based on a true story, takes place in Nice, crime, mystery)

Lila dit ça (drama, 2 teenagers living in Marseille, sad love story, a bit nsfw, about a writer)

La belle saison (Lesbians in the 70ies, unshaved arm pits for the win, cute yet sad, takes place on a farm)

Rien à déclarer (a very funny film about French and Belgian ppl and stereotypes)

Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (y’all should know this one!!! a classic! watch it with French subtitles!!!!)

Persepolis (animation film, an Iranian girl tells us about her life in Iran, France and Austria, very moving, based on real events)

Les innocents aux mains sales (older movie, with Romy Schneider!! a woman kills her husband but he’s not as dead as she thinks he is)

A la folie… pas du tout! (You think this is a cute romatic lil film? you are SO wrong!!)
