"Give me foooood"
She wants food
Bmi 15,5 anon. Girl, 169 cm. I want and need to gain weight, I'm nervous. How am I going to look with a lot more weight and how am I doing it in a healthy way? I'm feeling bad when I'm eating unhealthy food. Also hard to eat so much -feeling bloated
So first of all, you need to make sure that you avoid refeeding syndrome. You can read the link for info on that. You want to reach 3000 calories minimums, and you want to respond to any additional hunger or cravings that you have. You are likely to experience extreme hunger, which is normal and expected during your recovery and is essential to respond to should you get it.
I know that eating “unhealthy” food provokes anxiety, but that anxiety comes from your eating disorder and so is crucial to face and overcome.
Unfortunately, anxiety is something that you cannot avoid whilst in recovery: it is why recovery is so difficult. I use this metaphor for eating disorders and recovery: There is a terrifying dragon in your garden, and every time you try to leave your house the dragon tries to eat you. You have a choice: you can resign yourself to being trapped in your house forever, or you can find a weapon and go out and fight it. These are the choices you have regarding your eating disorder. You can either choose to remain trapped by it or you can face yours fears and fight it. You can only make the anxiety stop by eating eat minimums and resting. You only make it stop by going against your eating disorder. It creates new neural pathways in the brain, making your new behaviours eventually become normalised (right now your old behaviours - those created by your eating disorder - are normalised because you have repeated them so often). This is when the anxiety will start to lessen. The more you do something the easier it will become. You cannot avoid the anxiety unfortunately as it is all part of the process and is one of the reasons why recovery is so very hard. One way to cope with it is to shout back. Distinguish its voice from yours and argue back and beat it with logic. Another way is to distract yourself by watching a good movie/reading a good book/writing/painting/drawing/blogging etc.
Here is my post on anxiety management to help you out.
I know that the symptoms of recovery are really hard to deal with - both mental and physical. But you can and will get through them. You can do this! You need and deserve it.
I've been eating the same things day in and out for pretty much the last few years. When I've tried to add new things back into my diet, they make me feel pretty sick and sometimes I've gotten itchy/a red spot or two afterwards. But these are foods I've never had trouble with before my ED started? Is it possible that my body doesn't know what to do with them because I haven't eaten them in years? Its hard to add new foods because of this ):
I’m not sure what this is. Feeling sick I would think is a result of anxiety. If you are having a reaction like a rash, it would be best to consult your doctor to ask about the causes of it in relation to your eating disorder.

Hi, I considered myself in remission for the last year, but lately the ED driven thoughts started creeping in again. For example, I eat something that is generally considered "unhealthy"/has more fats in it, and then it's in the back of my mind for the rest of the day, making me unable to focus properly on studying, hobbies, ect. And even eating such meals makes me anxious, I can't even enjoy them anymore. Any advice? Thank you :)
Keep working on this. Even in remission we have the potential for relapse. When you recognise that things are sloping downwards, you need to catch them before they get worse, so always be aware and keep yourself in check.
Challenge the thoughts, and use logic to try and combat the anxiety. Distract yourself. Keep eating those foods and meals regardless. Don’t avoid them or the anxiety will get worse. Keep facing that fear and it will start chipping away at it.
A good rule of thumb is that the max your body can turn into fat (ie. "real weight") in a day is half a pound. So in two weeks, no matter how many calories have come in, you won't have gained more than 7lbs. Edema is what will be really catching up with you <3
_______
I don't know what to do. There's something that happens me that goes something like this: When I'm at school and I start using my brain to for example analize what the best answer of the question is, I think about the rest of answers I'll have to analize in my life. When that happens, my heart starts bumping faster, I have a sensation of wanting to purge, my hands start sweating. Am I the only one who experiences this?
That’s anxiety. It seems like your eating disorder habits are a direct reaction to managing to anxiety that you feel that comes from other things. Do you have a therapist to work on healthier coping mechanisms for anxiety? I’m back at everythingeatingdisordered so send any further messages there x
This is for the anon who asked about reducing her intake because she wasn't hungry for it/short breath/dad didn't restock food quickly enough, etc.. I was in your exact same boat last August. And I did gradually decrease... but then kept going and ended up fully relapsing by the end of the school year. That lowered hunger/difficulty breathing was nervousness/ED in disguise; it only got worse. Please keep it up!! Keep eating. Restock food faster. You deserve it & you NEED it. <3
Thank you so much for writing in!
It's so beautiful today!

Dry mouth anon: also I'm like thirsty all the timee, it's frustrating because I drink water but I don't feel satisfied, should I drink more? I feel like I'm drinking enough and I don't like to be full of water because I can't eat after that because of acid reflux :/
I think you should see your doctor and check out of you have an electrolyte imbalance which could cause you to be overly thirsty.
does the body positivity movement include naturally thin girls?
Yes
(9000 Calories Anon) Wow 10lbs that's really gonna annoy my ED. I think she meant I was killing myself with the amount of sugar, salts, fats, saturated fats. I was consuming a lot. Like dinner alone yesterday was 1kg of cereal, 2 large pizzas from Dominos,3 pints of B&J and Garlic breads etc (darn word count), Anyway the extreme hunger and water retention were what I was worried about and if you say it's safe to eat that amount then I fully trust you! although my heart pain/palpitations scare me
It is unlikely for you to gain 10lbs - I said that as the tops kinda thing.
Although I am honoured that you fully trust me, I am not a medical professional and I would heavily advise you to go back to your doctors. Whilst I am certain they will advise you not to eat that much, ask for the ways in which it is damaging you in the short term (as extreme hunger - at least to that degree - should not last more than a few months and will probably be less).
If you experience heart pain, you MUST see your doctor, in case there is an issue with your heart.

(9000 Calories Anon) I know it's impossible to gain 25kg. I'm also guessing it's water retention but what am I supposed to do about it. When will it disappear? how can I help it along? how much real weight could have I gained from 2 weeks of 9000+? should I try and stop the binges? how long will this EH last? I mentioned it to a nurse the other day and she said that I'm basically killing myself eating that much on one day, let alone for a fortnight. She was so worried and said I should stop.
Water retention will disappear with time when the body is much more healed. I don’t know how much weight is really possible at its highest - i’d guess around 7-10lbs at the most is physically possible (anyone correct me if I am wrong). In my opinion, I have heard of quite a few people eating that amount in recovery and being absolutely fine. However, I am not a medical professional, and if a medical professional thinks you are harming yourself, it would be wise to listen to them. However, I would ask exactly how it is killing you, because as far as I am aware, you cannot die from eating a lot unless it is to do with refeeding syndrome (which you are out of the danger zone for because it has been 2 weeks).

( Edema anon) I'm sorry I wasn't clear! But yes, it seems like out of blue I got edema. I maintain this weight eating to minimums, however I am an training athlete. Could it be the stress on the body that is causing this, after many years of illness I went gung ho into training? I've asked all my healthcare professionals but they didn't know what was going on , why it was happening xx
Oh gosh, as an athlete, you should be eating far more than that then. Yes, exercise can cause edema because the body is not healed yet. Exercise is really not recommended until the body is fully healed.
reminder:
even if you are unwell, you have to eat
even if you haven’t left the house all day, you have to eat
even if you are going to bed early, you have to eat
even if you woke up late, you have to eat
even if you haven’t exercised at all, you still have to eat
