-----------------------------------------
It had been about an hour since Jack had checked on you and figured that by now the drugs had worn off enough for him to test the waters of flirtation; something he never thought he would do.
Walking up to your door he gave it a quick knock and then stepped inside
âHey silly girl, how are you feeling?â
You looked up at Jack with your big beautiful eyes and smiled at him
âHi Dr.Abbot, Iâm doing okay, throat is still a little sore but I feel betterâ
âGood good, your throat will probably be sore for few days which is normal but if it starts to get worse you should go to your doctor or come back here to see us.â
You were nodding along as Jack spoke and smiled at him when he mentioned coming back for a visit
âOh yes because Iâm sure everyone will just love to see the idiot girl who got lockjaw from tetanus againâ
Jack smiled and gave a chuckle
âHey thatâs what we are here for, canât say I would complain about seeing you againâŚâ
You were smiling along at the words coming from Jacks mouth and then what he said hit you like a bag of bricks⌠He wants to see you again⌠holy shiii
âOf course I would never wish you to need to be in the ER again, obviouslyâ
You blinked and watched as a cherry blush started to creep over Dr. Abbots face; he was blushing! Oh my god say something back dummy heâs literally flirting with you!
âOh yeah of course! I mean if I ever do end up in the ER again I hope youâre my doctor, you made everything seem so easy and calm.â
That seemed to ground him again and he started to smile
âOh yeah I can do just about any type of intubation with my eyes closed, well⌠maybe one eyeâ
And then he winked at you.
Now you could feel the blush rising on your face; you luck out with Dr. Silver Fox and now heâs flirting with you, itâs like reality did a 180 and you woke up in dream land. You decide to push the envelope some more and flirt back.
âOh really? What else can you do with your eyes closed Dr. Abbot?âÂ
The words came out as innocently as you could manage behind the gravel of your sore throat and the effect was immediate, Dr. Abbot was as red as a stop sign and you watched as he opened and closed his mouth trying his best to come up with a response. You tried your best to hold you composure but eventually you had to let out a laugh.
âIâm sorry haha I shouldnât have said that.â
He shook his head and laughed
âNo, no I deserved that 100% haha you got me good.â
You smiled at his sheepish look and had to admit to yourself that maybe him reading the transcript of everything you said to Sam earlier wasnât the end of the world.
âI know you told me about having to verify the transcripts of my communication earlier⌠and I know I said some thing possibly pertaining to youâŚâ you were smiling sheepishly back at JackÂ
He nodded while rubbing the back of his neck
âYeah, youâve caused me some trouble with that sweetheart, now my coworkers are starting a petition to change my name to Dr. Silver Fox.â
âOh nooooâ
Your held your head in your hands and covered your eyes embarrassingly.
âOh yessss, Iâm sure a new badge was ordered an hour agoâ
âI am so sorry!â You looked at Jack half laughing half mortified âthat was so so sooo not my intentionâ
Jack laughed at your mortification
âItâs okay, you could have said much much worse about me; at least that was a complimentâ
With your face still in your hands you murmured âI am never going to show my face here ever againâ
Jack pulled his chair up to the side of your bed and pulled your hands from your face
âPlease donât do that, I was just getting used to seeing itâ
His lopsided grin spread a heat to your face and you could feel yourself smiling back
âOkay okay I wonât go that far but I am still sooooo embarrassed; Iâm one of those people that flirts with her doctor! Whatâs next? Flirting with a waitress. I am the scum of the earthâ at that you quite literally facepalmed and then flung yourself back onto your pillows.
Jack was chuckling at the outburstÂ
âIâm pretty sure I just flirted back so maybe not the scum of the earth, thatâs a little far.â
âTrue, but you got all embarrassed and blushy while I pushed it too far. Like what did I expect you to do when I said âwhat else can you do with your eyes closedâ.
âMaybe thisâ
âWhat? What are you doingâÂ
Just then Jack grabbed your hand and took out a pen and closed his eyes while he wrote something on your palm. Once he finished he gave your hand back and opened his eyes while you looked at what he wrote.
âWhat did you write⌠wait is that your?â
âPhone number? Yes it is; and I expect my contact name to be Dr. Silver Foxâ
Your stared at Jack with your mouth hanging open, looking astonishingly similar to how he did earlier. You closed your mouth as your blush bloomed across your cheeks and looked at your hand then back to Jack
âYes sirâ
He smirked at your response knowing that you were just trying to push his buttons to see if he would start blushing again; at that he got up and started to walk towards the door and gave you one last look
âOh and thereâs a lot more I can do with my eyes closed than write down my number, you should call me later to find outâ
At that he gave you a wink and let the door close behind him
Your face was on fire and the heat pooling in your stomach felt like you were going to explode. âCall me later to find outâ oh you could bet your ass I would. You started to frantically search for your phone finding it tucked under your leg inside the hospital blanket. Opening the contacts list you started to add a new contact: Dr. Silver Fox. Sam was going to lose their mind.
24 hours later:
You were discharged almost immediately after Dr. Abbot had stepped out of your room and had come back home with Sam to sleep for 15 hours straight. Once you woke up you had seriously considered if everything that had happened had just been some weird flirtatious dream and that Dr. Silver Fox was just a figment of your over active imagination; but alas the numbers on the palm of your hand told a much different, much realer story. You decided to give it some time to settle and and to weigh the possible outcomes of actually getting in contact with the Doctor and ultimately came to the conclusion that if he was interested enough to give you his number at work that you were interested enough to give it a shot. You dialed the number and it rang twice before the sound of his voice came from the other end
âHello?â
You could hear the gravel in his tone like he had just woken up, and god he sounded amazing. Biting your lip you answered.
âHi, is this Dr. Abbot?â
âIt is, may I ask who is callingâ
Now you were smiling, time to roll the ball back to his court.
âIâm calling later to find outâ
You could feel his smirk on the other end of the line
âOh sweet girl, took you long enoughâ

Jack was being completely unprofessional
He wasnât required to tell you in person about the documentation being uploaded to your chart, and he definitely didnât have to disclose that he was the one required to validate the entries. All of that information was in the tiny 6pt font disclosure that you had clicked the check mark beside right before you decided to type out how HE was more your type and that his curly grey hair and pretty eyes were doing something to you.
âGod I am so fucked in the headâŚâ Jack was mumbling againÂ
He could admit to himself that he went in your room and told you that information hoping to see if you would turn that pretty shade of pink again; which you did. He had never acted on any attraction he had for a patient in the past, it was unprofessional and honestly, he had never been so naturally attracted to someone to have the urge to even try. But, you⌠you were somehow digging into his mind and making him question if he should try just this once to flirt back.
He was pulled from his thoughts when Shen decided to join him at the command hub.
âHey, looks like that code from earlier is doing good, surgeon is closing up nowâ
Jack nodded âthat good newsâ
Shen was slurping down the last few sips of his iced coffee making that awful noise with the straw; Jack peered back over to Shen with his eyebrows raised:
âDid you need anything else?â
âOh no, Iâm good. Hey do you think theyâll let you change your badge to say âDr. Silver Fox?âÂ
Jack groaned
âNot you too?â
Shen was laughing then
âHey sheâs cute man, why donât you give it a shot?â
âUh maybe because Iâm nearly twice her age? And Iâm literally her doctorâŚâ
âShe obviously doesnât care that youâre ancient so donât even try to use that as an excuse; and she not gonna be your patient anymore in an hour so thatâs bullshit too.â
âItâs not bullshit, I donât wanna cross a line. Sheâs here because she is sick, not to find a boyfriend.â
âCould be both manâ
Jack rolled his eyes at thatÂ
âGo do your job Shen, I think North 4 needs to be checked onâ
âYeah yeah okayâ
Shen walked off leaving Jack alone with the hopeful thoughts of trying to make a move. He was actually going insane if he was considering hitting on a patient; yet here he was⌠thinking about hitting on his patient.
It had been an hour the last time Jack had checked on you and it was time to take the tube out of your nose. Jack made his way to your room and took a deep breath before knocking and going inside.
You were laid back in the hospital bed, eyes drooping from the increase of pain medication. Jack had told the nurse to give you 2mg of Versed to help with the discomfort he was about to cause you. He saw your eyes catch him walking though the door and a bright smile made itâs way to your face; you started looking for the tablet but Jack realized the nurse had put it on the table beside your bed, he grabbed it and quickly handed it to you.
âHere you go, how are you feeling?â
âI am feeling soooo much better Dr. Abbot. Whatever that lady gave me a minute ago is really workingâÂ
Jack smiled at you, you were high as damn kite and somehow knew how to make the tablet sound high too.
âI ordered some Versed for you because the process to take the tube out can be a little uncomfortable.â
âAhhhh well I feel GREAT, youâre a really good doctor.â
âJust doing my job.. lets get this tube out of your nose and see how you do actually talkingâ
You nodded as Jack began to deflate the cuff holing the tube in place and watched from the corner of your eye as he did some brief suctioning.
âAlright, I am going to start removing the tube, I need you to take a big deep breath in and when I say Go you start to let it out in a big push okay?â
You nodded and gave Jack a thumbs up
âAlright deep breath in⌠Go!â
Jack quickly pulled the tube out as you let out the deep breath you took, it came out easy and you didnât seem to be too bothered by it.
âDoes anything hurt?â
You shook your head no
âOkay good. Well your throat might be a little tender but you should be able to talk now. Do you want to try?âÂ
You gave Jack another nod this time to say yes.
Jack dimmed the lights now that the procedure was over and he rolled over a stool from the corner and sat down beside you.
âHow about we start with some yes or no questions to take it easy?â
You gave Jack a thumbs up and so he started
âWere you admitted to the ER with tetanus?â
You let out a raspy breath and more so whispered the word âyesâ but it was better than the tablet.
Jack was smiling now, you had a softness to your voice present even now around the raspiness caused from the tube.
âWere you transported here by your roommate Sam?â
âYesâ this time it was clearer, still raspy but you had more volume.
âGood, you sound great. You will probably have some lingering discomfort around your neck from both the tube and the distention of your neck muscles for such a long period of time but it should clear up quickly.â
You had a big loopy smile on your face again, the versed was still working its charm and now that the procedure was done the nerves were gone.
âThank you Dr. Abbot, youâre so great⌠and reallllly handsome tooâ
Your head was lolling against the pillow behind you and you had fully closed your eyes not like you were about to fall asleep. Jack was completely stunned, he knew the Versed would make you loopy but he didnât anticipate you to outwardly flirt with him.
âUhhh thank you⌠I should probably go check on some of my other patients nowâ
You nodded again still with your eyes closed
âOkay Dr. Silver Fox⌠you and your big arms go save the day for someoneee elseeeâ
You were slurring your words and he could tell you were nearly asleep but he sat there jaw slack, he could feel a blush coming back up his neck and his mind was running wild.
He slipped out the door to your room and made a beeline to the bathroom so no one could see him blushing like a 14 year old boy. Once inside he grabbed the sink and just stared at himself in the mirror.
âGet a fucking grip dudeâŚâ he shook his head at himself âyou are literally 48 years oldâ
Jack made the decision then and there that he would test the waters of flirting back, you were obviously interested in him and while the drugs were making you a little more vocal you had expressed private interest with your roommate earlier before all the drugs.

---------------------------------
You woke up startled by a loud alarm blaring in the ER hallway, nurses were running by your room door with what looked like a crash cart, they were shortly followed by Dr. Ellis and another male doctor you had not met.
âI wonder whatâs going on?..â you thought.
The alarm was cut off quickly but you could still hear the commotion of all the staff seemingly in the room next to yours. There was some yelling, not the angry kind, just the âthis situation requires volume and urgency because thereâs a lot of noises happening all at onceâ kind.
You could faintly make out distinct phrases, like a nurse yelling âBP is dropping!â and a male voice saying, âset up an intubation tray and call the OR!â
The commotion went on for about five solid minutes before you saw someone on a gurney getting wheeled towards the elevator, assumedly to go up to surgery. All you could think about was how you hoped that person would be okay and how in awe you were of the quick action by the staff.
The adrenaline of being woken so suddenly was wearing off but you felt a hundred times better than you did before going to sleep; and you noticed that the stiffness in your back and neck was almost completely gone. You could move your jaw and probably talk if you werenât intubated. Just as you were about to grab your phone to let Sam know you were feeling better, Dr. Abbot knocked on your door and came inside.
âAhh youâre awake! Thatâs good. How are you feeling?â
You were able to smile a real smile this time and Jack noticed as you went reaching for the tablet
âI feel so much better, the lock jaw is gone!â
Jack was nodding as he came up closer to your bed side
âThatâs good, it means the antibiotics are doing their job. I am going to feel around your neck is that okay?â
You nodded a âyesâ to him and raised your head for better access. You could feel the warmth of his hands through the gloves he was wearing, and it made you twitch slightly at the sensation, you tried to write that off as just surprise.
Abbot was quick with his examination; he gently prodded at the base of your neck and around your jaw, once he was finished, he pulled his hands back to look at you:
âYour neck feels significantly less distended than it was an hour ago, but I think we should keep you intubated for at least one more hour. You are making quick progress so I wouldnât worry.â
You nodded again and typed:
âWhatever you think is best Dr. Abbot, thank you.â
He gave you another soft smile, and you could tell he was tired. He had to be nearing what? The 9th hour of his shift⌠how does someone still look that good at 3am? Your brief day dream was broken by him speaking
âOf course, also I wanted to inform you that the tablet communication is backed up to your chart, as the attending on duty I am required to confirm the communication documentation is accurate, for liability purposes. When it does come time to be discharged you will be able to request those documents for your records should you so choose.â
You watched the words come out of his mouth in what felt like slow motion. Every thing you typed on that tablet was uploaded to a document in your chart that of ALL the people in this hospital HE had to read⌠âoh fuck me!â
You were almost certain the mortification was showing on your face, the searing heat of a blush wash washing over you like a tsunami. All the while Dr. Abbot sat there with a flat look on his face.. oh shit yeah he is waiting for you to respond, duh!
You quickly typed out a short answer hoping he would leave and you could sit in your shame alone as god had intended
âOkay, thank you for letting me know.â
Dr. Abbot gave you a quick nod and turned to excuse himself from the room.
âIâll be back in an hour to remove the tubeâ
At that he was gone, by the time the door closed you had somehow sunk further into your bed, the shame of what you had typed on that god forsaken tablet was going to haunt you for the rest of your life. You quickly grabbed your phone to send Sam a litany of texts:
âHe knows!!!â
âThe freaking tablet uploads everything I type to my chart and GUESS WHO HAS TO READ IT AND SIGN OFF ON IT?!?!?â
âDR. SILVER FREAKING FOX DOES!!!â
It didnât take long for Sam to respond:
âoh shit dude fr? Thatâs hilarious lolololâ
Of course, Sam found this funny, they had been doing everything in their power to get you hooked up with someone; and if someone just so happened to be your doctor then so be it.
âThis is not funny SAM! He knows we called him Dr. Silver Fox. I am going to DIE!â
âYou are not going to die, so what if your doctor knows you think heâs hot! He is obviously still being a professional about it!â
You thought about that for a minute; Sam was right, he had already read the entries in your chart and made the decision to still treat you and remain completely professional about all of it.
You took a deep breath.
âYouâre right, heâs been a great doctor, and he probably gets hit on all of the time, its fine⌠its totally fine, I need to chill out.â
âExactly, did he give an update on anything?â
âYes, should be getting the tube out in about 45 minutes now.â
âSounds good, Iâll start getting ready to head back then.â
You sighed
âOkay, be safe!â
A few deep breaths later and you felt mostly calmed down, there was nothing you could do about anything anyways, the entries were already read, and Dr. Abbot had made the decision to remain completely professional. You didnât admit to Sam that you were maybe a little hurt he didnât flirt back even slightly.

Jack had been having a pretty slow night; no one had come in with any injury or illness that required him to break a sweat and by 2 AM he was edging onto the belief that this shift might end up being relatively boring.
Of course, fifteen minutes later that belief was harshly broken by Ellis who came up to him with a wide look on her face.
âHey, Iâm pretty sure we have a case of Tetanus that just came in.â
Jack was nodding then stopped.
âWait, tetanus? What makes you think tetanus?â
âPatient presents with stiff neck and back, high grade fever, and get this⌠she has lockjaw. The friend that transported her here says she cut her arm on a rusty air conditioning unit while moving it and thought her tetanus shot was well enough up to date, so she didnât come in.â
Jack ran a hand over his face.
âJesusâŚif she already has lockjaw, she needs antibiotics now.â
âAlready on it but hereâs the other thing, her O2 isnât looking the best, sheâs okay for now but I really think she is going to need to be intubated, I figured we could do another nasotracheal intubation since the lockjaw hinders oral access?â
âThat will work, have you ever done a nasotracheal intubation before?â
âNo, but I bet youâre about to teach me.â
âThat I am. Get a tray ready with a Nasal RAE tube in some warm water and make sure she is numbed up really well.â
âGood to go, Iâll grab you when we are ready.â
Ellis left Jack standing at the command hub to let the nurse know to go ahead a numb the patient and went to grab the supplies they would need.
Jack sat down to give his leg a break and was wracking his brain trying to remember the last advanced tetanus case he hadâŚhe couldnât remember.
Most of the âtetanusâ cases that came into the ER were people looking to get a booster because they stepped on a rusty nail, which is when Jack would take the time to educate them on the fact that the tetanus infection actually comes from the bacteria Clostridium Tetani which is often found on dirty and or rusty items but the infection does not come from the rust itself. You could just as easily get tetanus by putting an injured hand into a pile of manure, but obviously people are more likely to step on a nail than do that.
By the time he finished his thoughts Parker was making her way over to grab him.
âPatient is numbed up if you want to do a quick once over before we go through with the full intubation.â
âSounds good, Iâll go ahead check her now and then we can go from there.â
Ellis gave jack a quick double thumbs up before turning around and leaving him alone again.
Jack made his way to the patients room and could hear laughter though the door, kind of odd for someone with an infection that can be fatal but hey, heâs definitely seen weirder. He gently knocked on the door and made his way in.
âHello, my name is Dr. Abbot. I am going to be to be doing the Nasal intubation today, I just wanted to come in and check on the numbing before we get everyone in here to do the intubation. You mind if I poke around some?â
The woman on the bed quickly typed out something on an iPad and was shortly followed by a robotic male voice.
âThatâs fineâ
The womanâs friend laughed slightly which earned a smile from Jack, it was quite funny to hear such a masculine voice come from such a pretty woman.
âOkay Iâm gonna touch the inside of your nose, you will feel some pressure and it might be a little uncomfortable but let me know at any point if you are in pain. Also, if you want, I am pretty sure there is a way to change the voice on the tablet to something more feminine.â
That made the friend laugh even harder and they piped up to tell Jack:
âOh, donât worry about that, she said the male voice makes her feel powerful.â
That earned a chuckle that turned into a small laugh as he turned back to the patient who was actively flipping her friend the bird and rolling her eyes; the pain medication Ellis prescribed must be kicking in.
âAlright youâre gonna feel some pressure now.â
Jack leaned over his patient to assess her nose and ensure the numbing spray was doing its job. He became acutely aware that he was being stared at but tried to pay it no mind, itâs not like she had many other places to look at with how close he was. He also couldnât really be mad considering he was looking at her too, she had beautiful dark eyes, and he could faintly smell the coconut shampoo in her hair; even with a thin sheen of sweat over her body, he could admit that she was absolutely gorgeous.
Once he finished his exam, he leaned back to address the patient.
âAlright, seems like the numbing agent did its job and you are ready for intubation, Iâm gonna let pain medication from your IV do its job for a few more minutes but I will be back with the rest of the team to get everything going.â
She gave him a quick nod as an okay and he smiled back before heading out of the room.
Jack found Parker at the command hub and gave her the update.
âEverything looks good to me, I think we should proceed, told her I would let the meds work a little longer so hopefully she is more comfortable before we shove a tube down her nose; other than that, we are good to go.â
âYouâre the boss; did she seem like she had a good grip on using the communication tablet? Iâve been setting up the connection to her chart so the conversation is recorded from the tablets responses; Gloria said we must have full documentation of her responses while she is unable to physically speak.â
Jack nodded slightly confused.
âYeah, she used it to answer me, but hold on what do you mean we have to document her responses from the tablet to her chart?â
âNew rules apparentlyâ Ellis sighed âTo limit liability the tablet communication app connects each session to a chart in the system; we can pull up every response she types out in real time.â
Jack winced
âThat feels like an invasion of privacy, do we have to screen the responses, or can we just hope it works and leave it be?â
Parker was shaking her head.
âThe communication documentation has to be signed off by an attending as accurate, obviously the conversation responses to her friend are not going to be an issue but you have to sign off on the communication we her care team have and essentially say that you verify the record as accurate.â
Jack was sure his face was telling exactly how he felt.
âI do not like this at all, Iâll sign off on whatever, but I am not going to read through that poor girls private conversations.â
âHey! Iâm just telling you what Gloria told me, you do what you think is appropriate.â
Jack rolled his eyes.
âThis feels very 1984âŚâ
At that Parker shrugged her shoulders and motioned for Jack to follow so they could get the intubation done with.
The intubation went smoothly and it didnât take long to see your O2 levels improve significantly.
âWe are going to head out now and let your meds do their work, if you need anything there is a call button on the bed, would you like us to let your friend back again?â Jack watched you slowly type out a response.
âYes, please send Sam back in. Thank you Dr. Abbot and Dr. Ellis for everything.â
Ellis stepped out to grab your friend and as Jack was leaving, he gave you a quick smile.
âDonât worry about it kid, Iâll be back later to check on you, try to get some sleep.â
He walked out of the room and went to check on some other patients.
After wrapping up his rounds Parker came over to let him know the nasal intubation patient had gone to sleep.
âJust checked in on South 15, she is knocked out asleep. Vitals are looking better and fever has come down from 102.3 to 99.5.â
âThatâs good, thanks Ellis. Why donât you go take your break and I will go ahead and look at the chart to make sure the tablet it is uploading everything accuratelyâ
Parker gave Jack a nod.
âSounds good, Iâll be back in 10.â
Parker made her way to the break room while Jack sat at the command hub opening up his Tetanus patients chart and battling with his conscience about the ethics of reading through his patients private conversations.
âThe things I do for you GloriaâŚâ Jack mumbled to himself.
Opening up the chart Jack was quickly able to see the communication tab and multiple documents that were uploaded from the Tablet. He opened the first document and started to skim the page hoping he could find a break in the communication log from when he was present to be able to confirm the accuracy of the documentation. Unfortunately for him something caught his eye and before he could stop himself, he was reading an entry made just before the intubation was performed.
âDr. Abbot is definitely more my type.â
Jackâs eyes got big, this has to be a glitch⌠he is twice her age! There is no way that is what she typed, it must be a typoâŚ
Jack kept reading hoping to prove himself right. At least that is what he is telling himself. The next entry was not aligning itself with his theory of a typo.
âI do not have a fetish for old men! Plus, heâs not even that old, he canât be older than like 48.â
âFetish for old men? I know her friend was not calling me old⌠maybe I should dye my hair, itâs gotta be the greys.â
If anyone saw Jack right now, he would definitely be put on a psych hold, mumbling to himself, frowning at the computer screen. He needed to pull it together before a nurse saw him. He skimmed down again, preparing himself to get to the parts he could verify but something else caught his eye.
âIâm not gonna flirt with him, this is his job and that would be wrong. But he does have really pretty eyes, and the curly grey hair is really doing something to me.â
âŚohâŚ
âMaybe I shouldnât dye my hairâŚâ Jack was mumbling again but his brain couldnât keep up with his thoughts.
A light blush was creeping up his neck to his face, and he had to admit finding out the beautiful woman in South 15 thought he had pretty eyes and nice hair was doing something to him. That, and the knowledge that she was considerate enough to not try and come on to someone at their place of work; Jackâs thoughts shifted to Myrna and her passive aggressive tactics at trying to seduce any male member of the ED that sometimes turned aggressive aggressive.
Shaking his head to relieve himself of the nightmare that is Myrna he turned his attention back to the screen. He was able to find the pieces of communication he could confirm were done during the procedure and quickly signed off on the first document. The second document contained a few quotes from after the procedure and while Jackâs curiosity was piqued from the quick skim and acknowledgement of the phrase âSilver Foxâ being present, he already felt as if he had crossed a line, he signed off on the second document and closed the chart for the time being.
Just then Parker came back to the command hub.
âWere you able to sign off on the communication documents for our Tetanus patient?â
Jack nodded
âYeah, everything is there and accurate from what I recall.â
âAwesome⌠did you read anything interesting?â Parker was wagging her eyebrows and side eyeing Jack.
âNo⌠I donât know what youâre talking about.â Jack could feel the blush creeping back and was doing everything in his power to keep it at bay.
âOkay, whatever you say Dr. Silver Foxâ Parker was full on grinning as the words came out of her mouth and her smile quickly turned to laughter as she watched Jackâs pale Irish skin turn red.
He was shaking his head hoping the blush would magically disappear.
âWho else did you tell Ellis?â Jackâs eyes were pleading.
âOh, itâs already in the group chat buddy, thatâs payback for making me handle the three different disimpactions and a C-Diff patient last week.â
Rubbing a hand over his face he nodded, he deserved this.
âOkay, fine. Weâre even now, right?â
âIâll think about it.â
The grin was back and before Jack could beg Ellis to show mercy the code alarm started to go off.

Typing... You get hurt and end up in ER with a highly inconvenient injury, and a very handsome doctor. Jack Abbot x f!Reader, nonbinary OC, background ish Parker Ellis, inaccurate medical procedures and injuries. This is my first fic ever please be gentle with me Word count: 3.4k Rating: E no beta
--------------------------------------------------------------
You woke up in a pool of your own sweat feeling like you had been hit by a truck, your neck was stiff and back was aching, and you were definitely running a fever. You grabbed your phone to check the time
2 am⌠god, you only slept like four hours.Â
Rolling out of bed was painful, the stiffness spreading from your neck down your spine felt worse by the second; âTylenol, I need Tylenolâ you thought quietly. Hobbling into your bathroom you searched the cabinet until you found the bottle of acetaminophen and twisted open the cap to pour out two pills. You opened your mouth to throw in the pills, except you couldnât open your mouthâŚÂ
âWhat the hell?!â You mumbled and quickly looked in the mirror. You looked as sick as you felt, your skin was covered in a sheen of sweat and the muscles in your neck looked pulled tight. You tried to open your mouth again and were only able to get your teeth a few centimeters apart, there was no way you could take any medicine and you started to realized that you were even struggling to swallow your own saliva. This was not good.Â
You slowly made your way out of your room and down the hallway to your roommates bedroom and knocked on the door a few times before hearing a tired âcome in!â. You opened the door and your friend Sam was immediately concernedÂ
âOh my god! Are you okay? You donât look so hotâŚâ
âI think I have LockjawâŚâ you managed to get out through literally gritted teethÂ
âUhhh okay⌠do we need to call an ambulance orâŚ???â
Sam looked at you with questions in their eyes and all you could do is shrug
âI donât know, I mean I think am okay if we just drove there. I donât know whatâs going on though, why canât I open my mouth?â
Sam grabbed their phone and asked SiriÂ
âHey siri, what can cause Lockjaw?â
âLockjaw can be caused by muscle spasms, jaw injuries, dental issues, and by the bacterial infection tetanus, which can be fatal if untreatedâÂ
The cheery robotic voice delivered that last bit of information a little too upbeat and the realization seemed to hit you and Sam at the same time. A week ago you had both moved into this townhouse together, it was old and full of the rustic charm that came with a house that was over 100 years old and that included no central AC. The previous tenants left several old window units in what was at best an attempt to be helpful and at worst pure laziness; the landlord had told you to keep what you wanted and trash the rest, so you and Sam made quick work of getting the old rusty units out of the windows as soon as possible. While moving one of the larger units you had cut your arm pretty bad on a rusty corner and Sam had immediately asked you if you had a tetanus shot.Â
âYeah! I had to get one when I was a teen and theyâre good for like ten years! Iâll be fine, Iâm pretty sure I was like 16 so itâs been less than 10 years.â
And you had left it at that.Â
Looking at the google search now of âhow long is a tetanus shot good for?â Felt like you were a little late to your own funeral
ââŚ.booster recommended sooner if you experience a deep, severe, or contaminated woundâŚâ
You looked up a Sam with a sheepish grin⌠or whatever you call what you were doing with your mouth right now.Â
âSo ER? Like now?â
âGrab a coat..â Sam sighed
Sam drove as quickly as Pittsburg would physically allow possible and it didnât take long for them to park outside the Emergency Department of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The drive was only about 10 minutes but the pain in stiffness in your neck and back seemed to have gotten a hundred times worse and you were in intense pain. Sam quickly came to your side of the car and helped you out, you were still able to walk but it was becoming increasingly hard and by the time you crossed the threshold to the lobby you were sweating from the effort it took to stay upright. Sam sat you in a chair and immediately went to the reception window.Â
âHi! I think my friend has Tetanus and she has some pretty intense lockjaw right now. We need help.â
The receptionist face as soon as she heard Tetanus changed from polite to intense worry and she immediately buzzed the door open and told SamÂ
âSomeone is coming out with a wheelchair right now!â
You were quickly surrounded by about 6 people, and a million questions were being asked around you. They immediately took you back to a room and got you on a bed, there was a nasal cannula around your face and sticky pads on your chest within seconds of the break locks being secured on your bed, you could hear Sam in the background answering questions and finally a doctor looked at you to ask you what happened, she was pretty with brown braids pulled into a bun and an undercut, you could see on her scrub top a badge that said âParker Ellis : DOCTORâ.Â
âIâŚutââŚmyâŚarmâŚon aâŚ.rutyââŚâ you couldnât finish, you looked up at Dr. Ellis pleadingly, it was nearly impossible to speak now and the pain in your neck was getting worse
âOkay, okay donât worry about talking just nod your head yes or no okay?â
You nodded âyesâ
âYour friend Sam mentioned you got a nasty cut from a rusty window unit correct?â
You nodded âyesâ
âOkay, we are going to start treating you with Antibiotics, while we run some test to make sure we know exactly what is going on. However, your oxygen is a little lower than I would like and the nasal cannula isnât cutting it, we cannot do a typical intubation on you because of the lockjaw but there is a method of intubation through the nasal passage, you will be fully awake but we will numb the passage and make you as comfortable possible, do you consent to us running some tests and doing a nasal intubation?â
You nodded âyesâ again but you could feel tears pricking at your eyes, you were starting to get really worried and now you couldnât even talk. It seemed like Dr. Ellis was able to read your mind and immediately called for a nurse to go find the communication tablet.Â
âIâm having a nurse grab a tablet we use for patients who are unable to verbally communicate with us, it will be here shortly, everything is gonna be okay. While we get your meds and let the numbing agent sit would you like me to have your friend come over to be with you?â
You nodded vigorously âyesâ a single tear falling down your cheek.Â
âOkay, sit tightâ
Dr. Ellis disappeared and nurse quickly came over to spray the numbing agent into your nose and throat while another was setting up your IV antibiotics and pain management. Once they wrapped up Sam was allowed into the room and immediately came up to your bedside, a worried look across their face.Â
âThey told me I could come back to see you while they waited for you to numb up⌠and that you canât talkâŚâ
You nodded again trying to smile at Sam but it probably coming across more as a grimace.Â
âItâs gonna be okay, Iâll be here the whole time okay?â
You closed your eyes again and nodded. The fear and pain were compounding on your exhaustion and all you wanted to do was go back to sleep and have this all be some crazy horrible dream.Â
There was a knock at the door and the curtain was pulled back to reveal the nurse from earlier returning with the communication tablet.
âThis is for you, itâs a pretty simple set up, there are categories for preset phrases like your pain levels, or simple responses like yes or no. Iâm gonna let you play around with it for a little bit while the numbing agent works some can get adjusted to it okay?âÂ
You nodded and pressed the big green âyesâ button on the screen.Â
The nurse smiled at you and turned to leave, letting you and Sam test out the tablet.Â
âSo⌠on a scale of 1-10 how much pain are you in right now?â
You flicked to the âPainâ category and pressed the number sevenÂ
The robotic voice from the tablet said âmy pain is a sevenâ in a monotonous and very male voice.Â
Sam laughed a bit, âI wonder if there is a setting to change the voice to a womanâ
You chuckled silently and found the custom message category that allows you to type out a message on your ownÂ
âNo, no, I like the male voice. It makes me feel powerful muhahaha.â The robotic voice said everything perfectly except the evil laugh, thatâs when it decided you had instead meant âmoo HA HA HAâ which pulled a genuine laugh out of Sam.Â
Samâs laugh was cut short by other knock at the door and the curtain being gently pulled back by a man this time, he very quickly announced himself.Â
âHello, my name is Dr. Abbot. I am going to be to be doing the Nasal intubation today, I just wanted to come in and check on the numbing before we get everyone in here to do the intubation. You mind if I poke around some?â
You quickly typed out a response
âThatâs fine.â The male voice said, earning a quiet giggle from Sam.Â
Dr. Abbots lips ticked up in a small smileÂ
âOkay Iâm gonna touch the inside of your nose, you will feel some pressure and it might be a little uncomfortable but let me know at any point if you are in pain. Also if you want I am pretty sure there is a way to change the voice on the tablet to something more feminineâ
âOh donât worry about that, she said the male voice makes her feel powerfulâ Sam piped up with a laugh
Dr. Abbot chuckled lightly, and you rolled your eyes while flipping Sam the bird, which made Abbot huff another laugh.Â
âAlright youâre gonna feel some pressure now.â
The entire time his hands were on your nose you were distinctly aware of just how close he was to you. You hadnât really paid much attention when he first walked in, still softly laughing at the failure of an evil robotic laugh, but you noticed now just how handsome Dr. Abbot was. He had curly salt and pepper hair and beautiful greenish blue eyes, there were probably thousands of freckles across his face and arms, and thatâs when you noticed his arms⌠wowâŚthe veins running down his forearms to his hands were bulging and the sleeves to the T-shirt under his scrub top were straining against his biceps. You could feel the warmth of a blush climbing from your neck to your cheeks and quickly cut your eyes away from Dr. Abbot and instead focused on the ceiling tiles above you.
You could feel the pressure of Dr. Abbot inserting part of his pinky into your nose but it wasnât painful and he was done prodding around fairly quickly.Â
âAlright, seems like the numbing agent did its job and you are ready for intubation, Iâm gonna let pain medication from your IV do its job for a few more minutes but I will be back with the rest of the team to get everything going.â Jack looked at you for confirmation and you were able to give him a weak nod as an okay. He nodded back and gave a small smile before turning to leave.Â
Once he was gone Sam came back to your bedside and was gushing as soon as they were sure Abbot was out of earshotÂ
âDude, he was hot! And so was Dr. Ellis, how do you manage to have two hot ass doctors taking care of you. Last time I was in the ER my doctor looked like the Slug receptionist lady from Monsters, Inc.â
You laughed hard which caused your neck and back to stiffen in pain but it wasnât as bad as it had been earlier so you still managed to stifle out a chuckleÂ
âI donât know, I guess I am just lucky. They are both attractive but Dr. Abbot is definitely more my typeâ the statement sounded wrong coming from the robotic voice but it was true; Dr. Abbot was one very attractive man.Â
âYou and your fetish for old men, I always forget how the peepawâs are what do it for youâ Sam laughed
You rolled your eyes again and started to type quickly
âI do not have a fetish for old men! Plus heâs not even that old, he canât be older than like 48â
âOh yeah, not that old just nearly twice your age!â Sam scoffed
âLooking doesnât hurt anybody, itâs not like I am really in a position to flirt with him anyways, plus whoâs to say he would even be interestedâ
âYou never know, the sweaty sheen and inability to talk might be his thingâ
You laughed again at your friendâs sarcasm, finally feeling the full effects of the pain medication it didnât hurt to let out the laugh this time.Â
âIâm not gonna flirt with him, this is his job and that would be wrong. But he does have really pretty eyes, and the curly grey hair is really doing something to meâ
âYeah, I caught you staring at him and then turning a shade Iâve only seen on tomatoes. Your subtlety is lackingâ
âDonât remind meâ you rolled your eyes.
Just then a knock at the door came and soon the room was filled with people again. Sam was quickly asked to step out into the hallway and Dr. Ellis and Abbot both approached your bedside.Â
Dr. Ellis was the first to speak:
âOkay, we are going to do the intubation now; do you have any questions before we start?â
You nodded your head âNoâ
âAlright, if at any point during the procedure you feel anything that hurts I want you to tap Dr. Abbots arm for me okay? Donât be scared to tap him hardâ
You nodded and acknowledgement and peered over to Dr. Abbot who gave you a smile
âDonât worry about me kid, I can handle a little love tapâ
His words made you giggle slightly and helped settle some of the nerves you felt crawling into your brain. âI canât believe a little cut from an ancient AC unit landed me hereâ you thought to yourself.
Dr. Ellis was prepping all the tools and the nurse from earlier came around to lean you back slightly. The nerves were slowly coming back to your mind but just then Dr. Abbot put your arm around his.
âRemember, if you feel anything besides pressure, tap me hardâ
You nodded again
Dr. Ellis leaned over you then and began to insert the long tube into your nose.
âYou are going to feel some pressure nowâ
You could feel Dr. Ellis pushing the tube further into your nose but just as she said, it was painless.
âOkay, the tube is at 14 centimeters, just above the airway. Dr. Abbot are you ready to feed in the scope?â Dr. Ellis was looking across you at Abbot waiting for his response.
Your eyes flicked over to him and he was holding a long wire looking thing with a bright light on the end.
âYeah; Iâm gonna feed this camera though the tube that Dr. Ellis just inserted so that we can get a clear view of your vocal cords nowâ
You could faintly see the tube at the end of your nose and watched as Dr. Abbot inserted the scope. The monitor next to your bed lit up with the view of the inside of your nose and then your esophagus
âAlright I need you take a big breath in for me so we can see your vocal cordsâ
You looked over at Dr. Abbot and he gave you a small smile as if to tell you everything was okay. You took a deep breath in and felt the tube move just ever so slightly forward.
âAlright perfect, the cords are sensitive, so we are going to spray them with some lidocaine nowâ
You could see Dr. Ellis moving over you again with a syringe of the clear liquid and could feel the cool sensation as it hit your vocal cords.
â1cc of lidocaine is in, we are going to let that sit for a moment, how are you doing?â
You looked over at Ellis and gave a thumbs up.
She smiled at you softly âokay, once the tube is in you are going to have to breath through your nose okay?â
Another thumbs up
âAlright we are going to progress the scope to get a view of the Carina and once we see that we will progress the tube. Remember to keep breathing through your nose right now.â
You felt the sensation of movement again and could see on the monitor as the scope brought two passages into view. Dr. Abbot spoke then:
âOkay there are the right and left mainstem, Dr. Ellis you may progress the tube nowâ
You felt the tube slide further in and watched as Dr. Abbot began to pull the scope out.
Dr. Abbot was nodding in approval
âThat went really well, we are going to hook you up to the CPAP to help support your breathing some that way your body can restâ
You were able to reach the tablet again to type your responses now
âSounds good Docâ
âWe are going to head out now and let your meds do their work, if you need anything there is a call button on the bed, would you like us to let your friend back again?â Abbot was looking at you patiently as you typed.
âYes, please send Sam back in. Thank you Dr. Abbot and Dr. Ellis for everythingâ
âOf course, Iâll go grab Samâ
Dr. Ellis stepped out then to go get your friend and Dr. Abbot stayed behind just a second longer
âDonât worry about it kid, Iâll be back later to check on you, try to get some sleepâ
Before you could respond Dr. Abbot was stepping out of the room and was replaced by Sam.
âHow are you?â
You could tell Sam was concerned and the visual of you with a tube in your nose probably wasnât helping
âI feel a lot better, the meds are definitely working.â
You could see Sam relax some then, their shoulders dropped and face was less pinched; then a smirk made their way onto their face.
âSo how having Dr. Silver Fox that up close and personal?â
Sam was wagging their eyebrows at you as you rolled your eyes.
âDonât call him Dr. Silver Fox that is so childishâ
Sam shrugged âYouâre the one that said he was hotâ
âI said he was attractive not hotâ
âYeah, yeah okay whatever, the other Doctor, Ellis, she told me to let you rest so Iâll leave you alone. Iâm going to run back to the house and get into some actual clothes and not my Pajamas. Do you want me to grab you anything?â
You shook your head no
âIâm good I think, just tired. I will probably sleep while youâre gone.â
âAlright, if you change your mind just shoot me a text.â
âOkay, be safe driving please, I know you are tiredâ
âI will be I promiseâ
Sam then leaned over to give you a quick hug and to hand you your phone. Then they were out the door.
You realized then just how exhausted you were, the lack of sleep and now the stress of dealing with a fatal infection was really starting to wear you down. Before he left Dr. Abbot literally told you to get some sleep and who were you to defy the very handsome doctorâs orders. You closed your eyes and drifted off to sleep easily, familiar green eyes and silver hair gracing your dreams.

Currently writing a Jack abbot x reader fic⌠first time ever writing fanfiction but I got an idea and I had to run with it đ #nervous
the switch up is so jarring...
the way robby came into that room with the most gentle voice and demeanor possible to check samira over and then when they realised she was having a panic attack because her mom is ringing her constantly and she's scared about her job - that switch! yeesh! i got whiplash! girl in the middle of a full blown panic attack and got the most mentally sick dude yelling at her to go home!
samira didn't deserve that. at all. but! robby is not in the best place either. i'll forever love how similar they are.
And so accurate to how panic attacks are treated in the ER!! You come in with chest pain and difficulty breathing and they take you seriously until the ekg is normal and you mention that you have had issues with anxiety and they immediately pull a 180°. They are both medical situations that no one wants to be in!! Yes one is emergent while the other is less so but they both deserve care.
