I have finished my 28th book of the year π§
Guardian is the standalone sequel to Proxy. Proxy was all about the dystopian world of this horrible system that rich people can do whatever they want but when they mess up someone needs to pay the consequences so they have proxies from the poor districts take them be it physical punishment or manual labor etc. then Syd and the gang (Knox and Marie) do what they can to take it down blah blah
Let's talk about the finale of the series with Guardian. So Knox died, he gave his life so that Syd may live, the system of Proxies and data has been shut down and now the Reconciliation is in charge. This group makes a council, names their personal enforcers as purifiers and they build a new world of hope and free of this problematic system. All the rich people are in these camps to help learn to be better people. Syd is this poster child of hope and a status symbol of hope. However he doesn't want it, he has a bodyguard, Liam, who is supposed to protect him from threats but Syd is miserable and he hates doing all this stuff so he's constantly giving him the slip and it honestly gets annoying. Especially when Syd does get into actual trouble a few times and of course Liam isn't there readily to help, but when he does show up he saves the day but then the council yells at Liam for not doing his job and honestly Syd was just annoying fkfkfkf he would try to be like oh wait it's my fault but that's not how the council saw it. Like Syd just let Liam protect you. Marie became a purifier enforcer and a good one too.
In this universe Guardians were like these minions of the rich originally but now that system was shut down they became "nopes" as everyone calls them. They are just mindless and don't talk but then suddenly they start getting sick. Black veins, coughing blood the whole thing. The Council just kills them, since there's no cure currently which upsets Syd. They're still alive in a way and don't deserve to just be beaten to death.
Liam has a crush on Syd which is so cute, we love our positive Yaoi however at the same time Liam is a little ruthless as his bodyguard. He's got a metal arm, hello Edward Elric, he'll literally throw himself on a grenade for Syd, it does get a little intense at times. But idk it's also cute he's so protective of him. Cousin, as he is called, is like this evil manipulative creature, let's call him a creature because that's just how I picture him in my mind, and a doctor could have potentially worked on a cure was killed by Liam because Cousin told him lies and Liam would do whatever it is to protect Syd. But like π fjfjfjfj after he killed her he found her book and was like oh π₯Ί a book, written text, a rarity, let me give it to Syd, he'll like books. Gjgkgjgjgk it was cute, kinda crazy, but cute though idk fkfkfkfk
Listen I'm here for THIS type of toxic Yaoi not the Knox BS.
Literally trying hard NOT going back into the rant of why Knox is the worst but literally even up into the last chapter Syd remembers flashes of Knox and I will not be gaslit! I don't support Knox x Syd! I don't support y'all shipping them, I don't support this author trying to push me into believing that they were doomed romance, it will not work. Yes is Liam kinda toxic because he asked to purifiers to watch Syd while he was away and when he came back he killed those 2 because he didn't want anyone to know where Syd was hiding away....yes...but idc Liam has Syd's best intentions at heart even if he has scary piercing blue eyes π§Ώππ§Ώ like does Liam need Brown contacts desperately? YES! However I'll take killer boy with robot arm and blue eyes over Knox any day.
Again just because Knox learned from traveling with Syd and Marie on "how to be a better person" that doesn't erase all the horrible things you did your whole life, literally it's been a few days and I'm just to forgive and forget? No!
Liam is sweet he got him a book and it was cute π₯°
Also love the typical Yaoi moment of Liam realizing that with his brawn and Syd's brain they made a good team but then wondered what Marie, a girl, offered to the gang fkgkfkfkgk π like damn
Anyways. Eventually Marie and Syd get sick, as does every other human, they try to find a cure, the cure is set the system back on. Cousin kills the Council and causes an uprising. Cousin and Liam are the only ones not sick because they were never part of the Proxy system so they remain immune.
The gang go to this gangs hideout, run by a little tyrant. Imagine my surprise to find the evil in their way of getting tech to reboot the system was like a 5th grader fkfkfkfk he had his gang of guards and made Syd and Liam fight which was very tough to read I won't lie, I felt nauseous.
The ending of the book was interesting and....idk how I felt. Like we did all that....for nothing.
The cure to reboot the system wasn't going to work and then we all go the camp where Marie's parents along with many others were only to find out that some of the "nopes" and people were getting better on their own. So like "natural selection" or whatever, the strong will survive the sickness? Idk how I feel about that, just feels like a odd way to end the plot. But Syd rested his head on Liam's shoulder and drifted to sleep, so I can only hope he'll wake up, feel better and live a nice gay life with this overprotective "if you look at him the wrong way I'll murder you in cold blood" boyfriend bodyguard.
A great book series, despite all the gaslighting of painting Knox as a good person because he ain't!
