Itβs interesting to see how Noahβs character changed after the crash.
Mitchell becomes way more awkward around the crew after the crash. Not because of the crash itself, but just because it seems like he doesnβt know what to do with himself or how to present himself anymore. Before everything happened, he was overky confident, talkative, sarcastic, usually the morale force. Judging by how comfortable he seemed in this position, he was probably really used to it. Afterwards, though, he lost all confidence in indirect failure. He knows it wasnβt really still his fault, but you can definitely tell part of him still feels like it was. He acts the way he does because he knows he canβt go back to his old personality or else heβll feel like a faker

So instead heβs down around stuck himself in this weird middle ground where he clearly still tries to joke around, but it doesnβt come naturally anymore. An example of this is when heβs talking to Cernan. His joke comes off exhausted, forced, and he quickly follows it up with a personal statement. The jokes are clearly coming out forced. He knows people wonβt buy his act anymore.. or maybe he just doesnβt wanna face himself like that again. Itβs not because the crew judges him, but its probably more because of the fact that everyone is tired and knows heβs feeling the same no matter how hard he tries to cover it up
Heβs also probably really ashamed of how badly the crash affected him too. Especially if Stafford, his father figure on board, died during the event. Even if everyoneβs struggling, Mitchellβs continuing to compare himself to the others like Anders. He wants people to see that heβs okay like others. His eye bags and lack of happiness in his eyes says enough .. after the fire, heβs lost everythingβand he knows it

Dare I say thereβs also some indirect avoidance of Stafford and Brianna after the incident. When Brianna opts to talk to Mitchell, he keeps his head lowered, and seemingly does not want eye contact. After the crash, thereβs little there left between him and Stafford besides the scanner event. He probably doesnβt want to be reminded of how much of a failure he is compared to them. Heβs the type of guy whoβd always about his condition until heβs literally rotting in the grave
But thereβs also this really implied trait that Mitchell canβt be himself alone. When he has no company, he completely zones out (once again scene with the Cernan interaction on Tau Ceti). I imagine this is when heβs rethinking everything heβs done wrong because he genuinely thinks heβs the worst one on this ship.
Interactions with the crew shift in a pretty noticeable way too. When people check on him or try to be supportive, he clearly, over time, loses the proper ability to respond.
Because of that, the crew resorts to this awkward dynamic of control because theyβre lacking all of their previous links before the issue they endured. Their conditions become less and less of a conversation topic and more of something everyone quietly works around as a group
Overall, he probably feels like the crash changed him into the person he tried so hard to hide. Through Cernanβs interaction, Mitchell admits that he has a lot to work on, and that heβs really not proud of himself. He uses his jokes to cover up how heβs actually feeling. He knows this isnβt recovery anymore heβs just stuck like this
