definitely whitewashing but the depictions of Tiger Lily and her tribe were always racist anyway you slice it. In the original story they were called the Piccaninny tribe. Piccaninny  is a deragotary term used for Black children.  The Disney movie had that incredibly racist song “What makes the red man red?” So even if they used an actually indigenous american I doubt Hollywood today would have made them any less a caricature. 

I keep making this comparison and I feel like its important. The Oompa Loompas as we know them, due to the movie adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are bright, funny, orange and green men. What most people don’t acknowledge is that in the original novel, the Oompa Loompas were African pygmies. The moviemakers made the decision to uh…sidestep that issue by making them fantastical, whimsical creatures instead. Basically, the same shit is being done with this Pan thing. The original interpretation was already sooooooooooo racist that they are choosing to make them weird, fantastical white people instead. I don’t know if they’ll somehow avoid calling them “indians” or whatever, leading to a bunch of kids growing up without ingesting the stereotypical and frankly racist portrayals of Native Americans in the original works. (In my personal opinion, Pan appears to be such a heavy rewrite of Peter Pan in the first place that there was no reason to include the “indians”. Add a different plot device other than Tiger Lily.) If they DO still call them Indians though? That’s where things can get dicey.
