Brother, Where art thou?
samsonfriskâ:
It was hard to get back to normal life after something like a fucking vampire attack. He had been shaken, terrified at seeing his sister being hurt in front of him. The adrenaline of the shift and the pain it brought on, not to mention the injuries sustained in the ensuing fight, it had all left Samson a little out of it when heâd finally reverted back to his human form. Evie and he had a lot to talk about, but neither of them had been in the right state for it at the time. But that night, as he tried to calm himself in his room, he felt as if he were high as a kite. Maybe the full shifting really did something to his endorphins, but he felt the best he had in years.
But as time went on, even though his wounds healed abnormally faster than he was used to, the time never seemed to come up. It didnât help that he was doing his best to avoid coming out of the apartment above the bakery. Fear at the aftermath kept him there at first, scared that his attacking Kolya might have grievously injured the man. And even if he hadnât, attacking the best friend of the guy he was kind of seeing was definitely not the best way to make a good impression. And then there was the depression, the self-hatred at how selfish he could be, turning the situation into something all about him.
And then he started tweaking. There was no other word for it, and as someone who had experienced withdrawal, he knew the signs. It took longer than heâd like to admit, but somehow heâd pieced it together. V. It was a drug, and heâd accidentally ingested a large amount of it in the fight with Kolya. And, well⊠it doesnât take much for an addict to hit the ground running once more. So with a quick visit to a friend at the vets, one he hadnât spoken to in some time, he had another dose.
The week went quickly after that. It was easy enough to stay away from the outside world, locking himself away in the apartment. And without a phone, since his broke before the attack, he didnât have to worry about the outside world coming in. Sure, he had to run the bakery, and when he was riding the rise of the high it was easy enough to maintain. And while he was riding the rise of the high, baking was a breeze, and he was able to make some pretty fucking fantastic pastries if he said so himself. The customers seemed to enjoy them as well, and the displays were empty at the end of every day.
The peak was, of course, his favorite part. Heâd heard of euphoria before, but even on the more mundane drugs, heâd never quite experienced it to this degree. It was something else, and for the first time in his life, he felt truly happy. Careless. Free. The hallucinogenic effect was something of a bonus, here, and he would lose hours after the euphoria wore off simply staring off past a book he was attempting to read, or even just at his ceiling as he lay in bed. It almost reminded him of getting high back in high school, or the good nights back in California when he managed to find something strong enough to last, but so so much better.
And then, of course, there was the fall. The crash. The end of the high. That was when he would pull away entirely. Lock even Evie out. She was the only one who bothered to check on him, anyway. Selene and Hadley were busy, and he couldnât face Peter if the man even did bother to show up. Heâd mutter to himself, or to whoever his drug-addled mind decided he was seeing in the corner of his eye. Heâd let the bakery run out of stock, not for lack of trying. All that mattered at that time was getting the next hit.
So, when the alarm wouldnât stop blaring in his ears, he smashed it with a rolling pin, grabbed the sheet out of the oven without caring that it seared his hand as he did, and stormed out of the bakery without caring that the oven was still on. If it burned down, it would save him some time in the future. Up the stairs, into the apartment. He had more left, plenty really. He just needed to be better at taking it, that was all. So he did, and soon enough he was laying on the not-so-shitty couch Selene had convinced him to get, calming down.
So when Evie burst into the apartment, screaming his name, he shot up and held the rapidly healing hand to his head as the movement made it swim. He could only answer in a groan as he lay back down.
âWhatâŠ?â
All the pieces were in front of her, but she didnât want to solve the puzzle. It would mean stepping into her sketchy past and reliving through the memories of her own addictions. Not to mention her abandonment issues held her tightly in place with no wiggle room for misinterpretation. There was more she worried about since that night. That she couldnât bring herself to think of. Samson could shift, but he shifted into a bear. Evelyn didnât mourn for her father, not really, but it was their father. She couldnât bring herself to ignore the small whispers in the back of her mind.
Stay with him and maybe heâll kill you too.Â
The self destructive conscious whispered to her. Samson looked out of it, and she almost wanted to leave him alone. However she caught the injured hair against his head and moved in closer with a frown. âA..are you ok?â She meekly whispered and set her purse aside. âLet me see.â Evelyn repeated a little more forceful than she meant it to be. Warmth and joy from her pending news dissolved into her nerves instead. Her meeting with Peter hadnât gone to plan at all, but it made her realize something important.
This talk needed to happen sooner or later, and for her own nerves she wanted it to happen tonight. However, now she second guessed it as she stared down at Samson. It was her brother laying there, but it wasnât the brother that had greeted her at the hospital nor was it the brother she used to play tea parties with.Â
âSammy..I think we..we..should talk.â
Knots in her stomach constricted and she could almost hear him leaving in her mind. She knew she had complicated things. Samson had a life here before she came, and from the evidence downstairs she was just a burden. Maybe this time she should leave and he would be happier. Maybe she was his problem, and part of her was frightened he would confess that to her.Â

Her first night after a long day. Classes and her job at the theaters. Sure things were a bit tense, but that was her own fault. Everything was her fault when ti came down to it. Had she not been such a blockhead and gotten lost, then none of these things would be happening. Evelyn tried to think of what she should do about the situation, if anything else.Â
Send Kolya a card?Â
Thanks for ruining my already fucked up life, signed Evie?Â
....What was wrong with her?Â
A frustrated sigh huffed from her lips as she made the turn towards the bakery. She heard a muffled noise and told herself to just leave it alone. Leave it alone. Yet instead of listening to her own intuition she kept forward towards the noise.  Each step that voice in her head grew louder. By the tenth time she scolded herself internally. What if this was a repeat? That would be insane right?Â
Evie paused next to a trashcan and sure enough there was a vampire enjoying their dinner in the cove of darkness. She felt the pins inside her prickle her flesh. Nope. This was a nope. She couldnât watch this. She should just walk away now. Evelyn Frisk was not some sort of vigilante set out against vampires. Nope, that was definitely not her.
She made an abrupt turn and collided with the trashcan. Evie glared as the trashcan rolled away ominously echoing in the otherwise quiet night. Whelp, no turning back now. Emotions reigned in she turned towards the back of the vampire and cleared her throat.
âSorry.. I .... didnât...Can.. you please like not?âÂ

Kolya was so lost in the blood flowing down his throat, down his chin that he failed to notice the approach of another until he was being physically thrown, and in that moment he was less of a person and more of a predator whose meal had been interrupted. He stumbled backwards and managed to stay on his feet, but only just. If heâd been a smart man, perhaps that display of strength from someone heâd always disregarded as harmless and the chilling roar would have had him backing down, but it didnât.Â
Instead, he was squaring up, giving a snarl of his own, fangs glinting in the dim light, but the manâs attention was drawn away. Kolya panted, watching the exchange, and felt petulant fury grow, his attention drawn back to the woman as she hissed at him.
And that just couldnât stand. He was sick and fucking tired of looking at threats and backing down from them.
Kolya was in motion again before heâd ever made the decision to strike, throwing a punch at Samsonâs ribs. Usually he was conscious of his gift of inhuman strength, usually he was careful, gentle. His movements typically held an air of delicacy, grace because for so much of his life, Kolya had wanted to bring beauty to the world around him, not further damage. But heâd been human, once. Heâd been a street rat, left to rot in the gutter as an infant and he hadnât lived through the cold and famine because heâd put the wants or needs of others before himself. He knew how to fight dirty, and he drifted back to those skills often enough that theyâd stayed muscle memory, and right now there was no hint of the man that had been shaped in high French society, only the one who had survived the streets of Russia in the twenties, thirties, forties.
A punch, a vicious shove and Kolya was back on the girl, biting her not for fun this time but as some sort of brutal message, sinking his fangs in to the delicate, tender flesh of her throat and ripping them through her skin.Â
@samsonfriskâ
Eyes. There was something about here eyes. But before he could say anything or even think hard on the fact, he was shaking his head. âEvie, you need to go, this isnât about leaving me behind, itâs about getting somewhere safe and getting this taken care of.â He motioned towards her neck once more, opening his mouth to say something else, but her hissing made him stop.Â
He heard more than felt the cracking of his ribs, the force of it tossing him aside like a ragdoll. He hit the ground with a solid thud, his body sliding a few feet before coming to a stop. The growl was already rising out of him, adrenaline allowing him to easily roll himself upwards, and when his hands hit the ground it was in the shape of two massive paws, the shift rippling across his body with a ripping sound as he roared once more.
A friend of Peterâs or not, Kolya was about to pay. Pushing himself up onto all fours, standing just above five feet, he charged forward once more, lifting the paw of his non-injured side to swipe at the vampire. Three-inch-long black claws dug into the manâs flesh, dragging from the left shoulder down into the middle, scraping against the back of the manâs ribs and spine. Thirteen hundred pounds was a lot of weight to have thrown at you at once, and the momentum of it all helped to rip Kolya off of Evie once more, almost spinning him around to face Samson once more, the bearâs dark eyes bright with fury.
Without a moment's hesitation, Samson lifted his right paw when his left hit the ground, steadying him, and let it tear across the manâs left arm and into his chest, skin ripping easily beneath his claws. He was going to rip this man apart, and at the current moment, nothing in his mind was fighting that urge. The sight of Evie behind them, covered in a fresh coating of her own blood, egged him on and he let out another roar into Kolyaâs face, massive canines dangerously close. Another warning. Back off. He just hoped Evie would be able to run away in her condition. She needed to get help, and he had to keep Kolya off of her. At any cost.
@evelfrisk
âNo, no. I canât.. â Evie tried to stubbornly counter Samson. She wasnât going to leave him alone with this monster. He couldnât save himself, she could help him. He didnât know she shifted, but she could help him. The future for herself was bleak in comparison. Sammy had so many things to live for, and Evie? She felt she had nothing except for Sammy. She couldnât lose him. One fault of her own was keeping this secret meant she wasnât trained in defending herself against larger prey. Once she saw Samson fly off, she already had started to scream before she felt the vampire on her again. Viciously tearing at her neck, and this time she almost felt like his fangs dug through the nerves of her neck. It sent a jolting shock pain down her body.
The horrified look on her face wasnât from the vampire she tried to weakly shove away, but the mass she saw come from behind him. Samson could turn? INTO A BEAR? Memories danced in a distance about the cabin and the corpses of her father and that boy. The aftermath of an animal attack they had said. The blood gargled and flowed like a crimson waterfall from her neck. Thereâs only one way out of this she told herself. Evelyn hadnât thought the transition through before it started, two of her arms extended to try to push Kolya away from them. Both arms having already morphed into paws with the force of the lioness. Evelyn kept the claws retracted as she had already witnessed the terrified scene of the bear claws striking the attacker. Samson was too close to his face for comfort, but she wasnât sure if her strength had formally transferred to her feline form to make a difference at that time.
The blood pumped out more coating the lionessâs coat in red, and as a large cat the bite from the vampire looked more severe than it had in humanoid form. In this form it even had chunks of the cheeks ripped off and gore hung slightly. The lioness gave a roar of her own which turned into a pained yowl towards the end. Â Meanwhile she tried to concentrate but she still wavered a bit off her balance. But she was ready for whatever happened next. Whether it was to help this stranger escape or defend herself against another bite.

peterwolfboylopezâ:
âKolya.â The word came from his mouth before he could stop it, spat out somewhere between annoyed and pained, and he quickly shook his head. âThe man who attacked you, thatâs his name.â Not likely that the girl cared what his name had been, but he couldnât quite help himself. Watching her actions could only cause him to wince, something akin to pity washing over him. He had no detail on the attack that had occurred, besides knowing what the vampire had looked like after Samson had gotten a bite or two out of him. He could only imagine what the baker boy, what this girl, had looked like in the aftermath. He didnât want that mental image, and quickly tried to wash it away with a gulp of his whiskey.
âIâm glad that youâre okay.â All of them, though he kept his words directed at the girl pointedly, didnât add that addendum out loud. It didnât matter what his feelings on the matter was, what mattered is that he was sitting and looking at the girl, that she hadnât been turned into a corpse. He could only assume that she wasnât quite human herself, if her relation to Samson and the fact that she wasnât sporting some nasty scars right now were any indication. Peter highly doubted that Kolya had stuck around to heal the girl with a drink of his own blood. âPhysically, at least. Iâm sure that emotionally youâre not⊠quite there. Itâs understandable.â His words had turned a bit more clinical, an attempt to distance himself from the entire situation. He sat up a little bit straighter once more, fixed his tie, his hair. That professional demeanor reappearing as he slipped into the mask of it to hide how he might truly feel about the entire situation.
It was easy enough to move on, however, when Evelyn finally offered her explanation to what a⊠fuck boy was. And⊠well. Peter winced once more. He was a bit guilty of that, wasnât he? Maybe technically he and Samson had only âhooked upâ as she said, once. But he did keep a rather nasty habit of not reaching out, not contacting the boy more often. And coming up with the worst excuses for it, as well. âNot exactly. Iâm just⊠not the best with friendships. A bit of an introvert, bad at reaching out. I assume that he will be upset with me becauseâŠâ He paused, wondered if he was about to scare this new hire out of his office. âThe man that attacked you isâ wasâ my best friend. And I didnât bother to reach out sooner. No matter, shall we take that tour?â Anything to get away from this topic of conversation.
Everything went downhill after his name.
âKolya.â
Evelynâs eyes went someplace else entirely back into the scope of her memory. The flesh and muscle being ripped by open by that monster. The pain she had endeared, all the blood she had lost, and that sense of innocence that a vampire attack would never happen to her. All of it gone. Her fingers leave the glass unattended on the desk and instead comb through her hair. The nails themselves breaking slightly apart as the claws came out from underneath them. Part of her thick fiery mane fall from her head as she tried to tell herself this was all over.
Kolyaâs attack was over.
Then that made her semi predatory brain wrap around another fact. Peter knew about the attack. He knew about it. Yet he hadnât even attempted to check on Samson to see if he was alright. A person that was supposed to be her brotherâs friend or fuckboy. It was still unclear. She tried to calm her emotions as they flooded to the surface like a tropical hurricane. Finally her eyes peered back at him. The nervous jaded girlâs irises become hidden under the diamond slit obsidian pupils.Â
âIâm glad that youâre okay.â The words repeated in her mind. The jawbone muscle cracked in and out of place, enough to darken the area around her neck. To make it visible, to make him see. Also breaking the way that she his assumption was right and she was definitely not a mere human herself. Thereâs a brooding guttural growl that retracts, as she takes the gentle reign back into her emotions.Â
âYou knew...â She whispered in a heartbroken tone mixed with the vocals of the cat. âAnd you ..just..â Her hands land on the desk as the claws scratch against the surface. Evelyn reminded herself that she needed this job, and surely changing into a lion wouldnât be helping her chances any. Hell she could have already blown it. She took in several deep fast breaths starting to hyperventilate as the partial shift started to retract itself.Â
Quietly she sank back in the chair and kept her eyes locked onto him. The eyes of a cat that hadnât turned back to her regular ones, but the tears that slid from the ducts were all human. âYou knew.. and you didnât.. you didnât even care to check on Sammy?â She stood up from the chair and found herself pacing behind it trying to dispel the feral energy inside her being that wanted to rip out. âIâm an introvert, too. But if I knew.. my friend might be hurt.. I would..have at least CALLED.â The word bounced off her lips in the volume of a lionessâs roar. The next set of words were full of her normal softness.Â
âYouâre a..a..coward. Sammy needs you, his friend.â On the defensive once more about it, as she ignored the image that flickered in her mind. Peterâs best friend had ruined her. He exposed their secrets, and he may as well have taken one of her nine lives. In all her slip she had failed to note that he said âwas his best friendâ. Her shoulders lift and fall with the pattern of her shuddering. Words werenât easily found as she vigorously wiped at her tears and motioned to the door with a slow nod. If he would still accept her they needed to get this tour out of the way.Â

Perhaps it would have been wise to be more cautious. But the full scale of his present situation had yet to settle in. There was his general reasoning that if he had managed to survive as long as he had in a city and supernatural community over quadruple the size of this strange little town that this would simply be a walk in the park by comparison. Time would tell. But one thing Anthony did know for certain was showing anyone fear was already a strike against your own chance of success. He wasnât interested in petty town gossip-mongering, sure, they entertained him, but he had no investment here. No reason to care about a bunch of strangers when there were people more important in his opinion outside the borders of this place. People he wanted to help and get back to.
Stubbornness was a rather defining trait of his. Though stubborn persistence only got you so far. âThere are other means of communication beyond technology,â he scratched his slightly bearded chin in thought wondering if perhaps a spell might be able to convey a message out. Though how he was supposed to know where on earth this town was located was beyond him. His sharp gaze returned to the girl noting how sheâd back-peddled, not that he minded, in fact he rather preferred the distance physically and metaphorically. Â
âMm, youâre right, sounds depressing,â and he was not intent on staying here. Giving in and going to this Hub place was a last ditch chance if all else had failed. He hadnât reached that point, yet, there had to still be options didnât there? Going to the Hub in his mind was admitting failure and one thing a Sinclair didnât do was fail. âPurgatory?â he snorted under his breath, âwell if this is purgatory it has shit onward convoy service and I for one donât plan to climb any stairs so just point me to the highwayâŠâ Perhaps religious humour wasnât the best thing to subscribe to presently but it couldnât really be helped.
âCrest Hill?â now that sounded positively ominous and his brows raised in curiosity that really couldnât be helped âand whatâs that when itâs at home?âÂ
Color her surprised at his short comment about communication other than technology. Evie blinked at the man and tilted her head curiously. She was younger and never really exposed to the supernatural. Mainly because her parents had assumed she wasnât born like them â a shapeshifter. Perhaps if they had known they would have made sure she was more privy to necessary things. âThere is?â She asked softly and stared at him with the instant hope blossoming behind her nervous hues. It was a game her feet played on her with each curious thing she took a step forward, and with each short comment from him she took a step back. âW..what do you mean? Beyond..technology?â She asked a bit more precise than her awestruck tone a few minutes prior.
Evie nodded towards him, âOh actually.. you should also be careful at night.â She whispered and realized how shady this sounded coming from her. Since she just pounced onto him figuratively. Though she was trying to help, and she hadnât tried to rip his throat out. âThere..there are vampires here. â She was sure there were other things that went bump in the night that were just as dangerous, but she wasnât really aware of what those might be. âYes, depressing.â She sighed through her nostrils with a frown. Â For being such a nervous and sad individual his attempt at religious humor had her laughing. A dry laugh one that rarely happened. Especially one that lasted a few minutes in length. âGood one. Â Jimmy Page and Robert Plant arenât here to hear it though.â The useless bit of information she had at her disposal.
âYeah itâs supposed to be the place where the tree is. Blood tree they say. Iâm sure if we got a reasonable distance we could see it, and then maybe it will help with processing?â Evie offered with a slow shrug of her shoulders. âI figure a blood tree would defy logic, and that would help with the logical part of the brain trying to find the way out.â Then it dawned on her that she probably shouldnât be walking around with a stranger, and so she cleared her throat her tone hitching back to her dominant nervous persona. âIâm Evelyn Frisk, by the way.â Â
Rooftop Melodies
hadleyxbowenâ:
Hadley was the type that asked for permission and then acted before the other person could say yes or no. Convenient that the answer was yes in this case, since the brunette was halfway to the ledge anyway. She kicked off her sneakers, preferring the feel of the wind pulling at her bare feet. Keen eyes took in the girl without being too direct. Shy, sad, on the precipice of some kind of emotional blowout, she looked like she needed a friend. Hadley could sympathize, had sat on a ledge or two with the same kind of look in her eyes. âAh well, people here want to feel rooted, I think. They think the ground offers stability and heights like this are unsteadyâŠ.all changing winds and intangible maybes.â The people on the ground below were not like them, Hadley and this is sad, nervous, creature beside her.
âWarning labels. God wouldnât that be convenient?â she asked with a chuckle. âThough do you think youâd heed them? My brain always tries to tell me that Iâm the exception to all red flags and warning signs.â This girl sitting beside her was a red flag, fingers nervously kneading, an unpredictable hurricane in the air around her. It reminded Hadley of herself. âFlying is exhilarating, itâs like running but thereâs nothing under your feet.â She smiled, suspicions confirmed when the girl mentioned landing on her feet. A Felidae then, how fun. âWell thatâs a valuable skill right there. Me and my wings donât always have the most graceful of landings. I excel at the takeoff though.â
She doesnât know this girl. Whatever is going on behind those sad eyes is most definitely not her business. But something in Hadley didnât want to leave her here on this ledge alone. Back when sheâd been a hurricane on the edge, she wished someone would look at her with understanding in their eyes. âIâm Hadley,â she greeted, offering her hand. âIâve probably on been here a little longer than you. Have you shifted since youâve been here?â
Evie didnât seem the mind when the girl didnât really wait for her answer to come join her on the ledge. Her hues still watching over the ants down below somberly. She listened to the other girlâs words and thereâs a slow smile that progresses across her lips before it flattens into a straight line. Evie is glad to have the company of someone else, even if she is dealing with her own existential crisis on the inside. She hummed thoughtfully as she slowly peeked again for better observation.
âMmm. Depends. And would the warning labels be correct or would they be defective because they wouldnât be able to predict what would happen? How a person would change?â Evie tilted her head curiously fiery curls catching on the slight breeze. Entangling the flaming tresses in the night air. âHave you ever been scared..to fly?â It was a silly question, because Evie had never been afraid to jump. Though Evelynâs reasoning was more her broken interior and lack of wanting to live than fear as a denominator.
Evie finally calmed her anxiety enough to instead lightly tap the ledge with her fingernails instead of kneading the fabric. âI guess I fly for a few seconds, and then I take a dive.â She blinked finding herself curious about something else. Canine teeth pressed into her bottom lip before she finished asking her question, âHow do you normally land?â
She stared at the hand hesitantly. One of her hands slowly moved from the ledge, and at the pace of molasses finally shook Hadleyâs hand surprisingly hard. Before she darted it back quickly. âIâm Evelyn, but you can call me Evie.â Grateful in this moment to have company, and not just any sort of company â but someone like her in a way. âI only got here..a..few days ago..â She whispered turning back to her nervous wreck of a self because she remembered the circumstances of when she had awoken in Ashbourne. âOh yes, I shift every night.. but my brother doesnât know. I.. I donât want him to know.â

Peter shouldnât have taken a drink exactly when he did, but apparently he was cursed with extremely rotten timing, because the moment the girlâs question was out in the air, he was choking on his whiskey, sputtering, coughing, trying to catch his breath. Was he a what now. A fuck boy. It took him a moment to regain his composure from his little coughing fit, taking another sip of his whiskey for good measure, and let out a harsh sigh through his nose. âAm I a what now.â He had to know what the girl meant by that, because if she was speaking literally than, wellâŠ
But she was starting to tear up. Oh, dear. Emotions. Peter felt something in his chest tug a bit as he watched the display and then she spoke up again andâŠ
I met one of those sharks⊠I got attackedâŠ
I took a bite out of someone he didnât want me to, apparently, so he bit back.
Pieces of a puzzle, snapping in place and Peter felt himself letting out a hissed groan through his teeth, hands coming up to press roughly against his eyes. This was just fucking great. âIâll drop by this afternoon, see if he wants to chat with me.â A pause, and his hand lowered to look at the girl again, opening his mouth again, only to snap it shut again. The part of him that wanted to defend Kolya, the part that wanted to tell the girl that the vampire wasnât⊠whatever he was doing right now⊠pushed against his lips but stayed quiet. He couldnât tell her that, because Peter himself didnât even know that was true at this point.Â
âYou have nothing to apologize for.â He took the paper from her, barely gave it a cursory glance before he set it aside, before he rested his arms on the desk and looked her over. âAre you alright? After your attack, I mean?â
Evelynâs cheeks had turned the color of her fiery red hair as it settled in. It was worse when he sat there and almost choked because of her. The redness tricked down to her neck as she tried to physically rub it off with her hand. Part of her found this funny, but not enough to sink into with her current state of being embarrassed. What was she thinking? She canât go around blurting out someoneâs a fuck boy without any receipts. Â The conversation had taken a turn, but she would revisit on what she had called him. Instead her the redness drained from her face and her neck and instead grew fairer than her normal tone. There was still a pink blush tone to her cheeks from the intake of alcohol.
She didnât take note of the hissed groan, but she did take note of him roughly rubbing the palms of his hands against his eyes. Did he know something that she didnât? âYes, please.â Evie pleaded with a slow nod of her head, her lips drawn downward into a small frown. He wanted to say more, she could tell. The way he opened his mouth and closed it was something she did too many times to count. âYou..you can tell me if..thereâs something I should know.â She whispered unsure if she wanted to hear the manâs words or not.
Before she could inquire more he had taken the paper, and his question.. Evie nervously fiddled with her fingers in her lap. âWe..we are alive..so thatâs good. Iâm fine. The shark and Samson both.. survived. So everything is okay. â She answered meekly and quietly rose a hand to her neck where the phantom pain came with the memory of it. She had never been bit by a vampire before, but there was a first time for everything it seemed.
Evie blinked and remembered what she had called him earlier and finally answered the question that got side tracked. Hoping to throw the conversation away from her, onto him. She swallowed and prepared herself
âA..fuckboy. You two hook up and then you donât answer him for a few days. Is that why .. is that why he would be pissed⊠at you? You just umm..just..talk..to him..when you ..want to hookup? Then ignore him?â The girl had slumped back in the chair. Way down. Almost enough to disappear, at least she hoped so. Did Peter even want to hire her after all this?
tonysinclairâ:
Denial was quite a powerful motivator. Running into Harlan and Carrington the day before heâd been told that apparently he was stuck here. Heâd laughed it off at the time of course, ridiculous really. You couldnât be stuck anywhere, there was always some way out. That was his speciality after all. Finding ways out. Solving problems that seemed to have no apparent solution. He was good at it, knew he was good at it too which just added to his frustration. This was just another puzzle to solve wasnât it? A test of determination that could surely be overcome. Heâd been too drunk the previous night to think about anything beyond crashing on the stiff mattress in the cheap motel room heâd rented for the time being. But now he was coming to realise the men the prior had hadnât, in fact, been joking.
Heâd been wandering the roads for hours, it was difficult to believe he hadnât noticed it or the oddness of certain individuals in the town when heâd first arrived. But considering the state heâd been in when heâd arrived it was also not that surprising either. The adrenaline had long since worn off and now he was able to think about things a tad more rationally. Like how much it hurt when he breathed too deeply, or the fact he felt like heâd gone and drunk ten coffees too many alongside the worse case of the flu ever recorded despite the Springtime weather.Â
The distinct sound of something landing behind him caused Tony to turn on the spot, straightening some as he eyed the unfamiliar creature that certainly didnât belong in these parts and thus marked this out as an individual. Heâd met shape shifters in the past but naturally averted his eyes initially as she shifted back more out of politeness than anything else aware that some didnât appreciate being watched constantly. Their gunmetal hues glinting in the low light as they returned to her features when she spoke, a young woman as much as he could make out in the low light. Though what she said was met with a slight shift of his weight to his right foot and crossing of his arms. âFigured that, was hoping it wasnât true through,â there was an edge of frustration to his words as he glanced back at the road heâd been headed down as though tempted to try once more, just in case. âThe Hub?â his lips pulled down into a thin line, considering this information but ultimately rejecting it with her latter addendum his attention returning to the young woman, âno, though if theyâre going to say thereâs no way out⊠I hardly see much point in wasting my time with unnecessary trips.â He harrumphed under his breath, âno offence, but who the fuck is the genius that makes a town you canât get out of?â
Evelyn kept her eyes on the stranger knowing the danger of the night or dusk of Ashbourne. Even now her mind rudely reminded her with the vampireâs face and she felt the phantom pain on the surface of her neck. However she remained with her composure but paused when he spoke. Truth be told, Evie hadnât tried to leave before. Since Samson was in town she took her elder brotherâs word that there wasnât a way out. At times she had followed people more out of curiosity, but she never for once thought there was a possibility of leaving. Nervously she clasped her hands in front of her and twiddled her thumbs. âI..mm..â She paused as her mind picked up on the frustrated tone which made her take a cautious step back. âI know my cell phone doesnât reach out there. I tried to call my mom the night I got here.â
Jaded hues turned fleetingly towards the road he had been meaning to travel to. Unnecessary trips? Yet he would continue to try to find a way out that didnât exist. âThe Hub helps you get ..settled.. in town. Jobs.. Housing. So it might help you acclimateâŠto being.. stuck here..â The frail voice carried in contrast to her appearance. Evie took a few steps towards him, but another backwards when she heard his next comment. âI..I..Well.. I just.. assumed it was Purgatory when I got here. Iâm sure.. â However, instead of taking her down the river of Styx, she somehow, someway managed to get trapped here.
âIt has to do with the tree if I remember correctly.. I was.. overwhelmed when my brother took me towards the Hub. I..I...have been meaning to go towards Crest Hill to get a closer see.. if you would like.. to see for ..yourself? â Evie perked up at the thought of having a companion to walk with, and hopefully once that wouldnât try to devour her seconds later.Â
Curiosity did kill the cat, but the tale goes that satisfaction brought it back.

A small tilt of the head, watching her carefully, and Peter offered a bit of a chuckle. âYou can speak freely here, you know. Iâve already decided to hire you, and I donât fire employees for having an opinion.â He reached for the bottle of whiskey himself, poured some into the other glass and brought it to his lips. It was, perhaps, the worst kept secret to the staff that he drank on the job, but when it took so much to get him drunk, it wasnât as if it hindered his work. He kept his sips small, however, not wanting to come off as the very blatant alcoholic that he truly was in front of, essentially, a new hire.Â
Peter almost couldnât help the twitch of his lips, up at the edges when the girl spoke again, and he offered a small nod of his head. âYes, I know Sammy quite well, as a matter of fact.â In that they had been on⊠three dates now? Peter was rather bad at keeping track, but as it stood, since heâd found Kolya ripped apart by Samson, he might have been pointedly avoiding the boy. Big can of worms, and heâd had quite a few⊠bad days in a row since then. He needed to reach out, to make sure that Samson was okay after that.
Then again, would Samson want to talk to him at all?
âWeâre⊠friends⊠Or something of the sort. He might be kind of pissed at me, at the moment, actually. I havenât spoken to him in a few days.â He offered a small pause, then he couldnât quite help chuckling again. âBut something tells me that, with how sweet he his, he wouldnât consider you anything close to a burden or a distraction. However, if thatâs how you feel⊠As I said, Iâve pretty much decided to hire you. I just need you to write down your school schedule so that I can work around that for you. Then I can give you a tour of the place.â
Was he just saying that? Or did he mean he wouldnât fire her. Jaded eyes widen as she flashed a grin for the first time in awhile. She could use this to lure Sammy out of his funk maybe. âReally? Youâre going to hire me?â For a second she was able to ample herself out of the fictional waves of anxiety that held her down. Evie slouched in the chair and brought her arms to hug her legs towards her chest. Â Why hadnât Samson mentioned Peter to her?Â
Wait.. Wait.Â
Evie coughed slightly to keep herself from asking a rather probing question of her own.He did say he would hire her though, and he had started the personal question. Evie glanced from him to the bottle of whiskey thoughtfully. She had mostly fallen silent as he continued. They were friends, but Samson might be pissed at him.
Oh my god. Iâm in the office with a fuck boy.
Evie blinked her eyes and sighed lowly. âOh..you..I..â She fidgeted in her chair and before she could catch her nervous energy it unleashed everything. The tears had started to swell in her eyes, âI..I.. He.. he.. you..â Where did she even begin? âBy.. friends..and being close.. are you a fuck boy?â She didnât exactly mean to ask it so bluntly and blinked slowly with a wave of her hand. The look on her face moved from concern to being mortified.
You did not just call your boss a fuck boy.
âNo.. no, wait. If youâre his friend you need to call him please. He⊠He hasnâtâŠbeen.â She took another deep breath and already felt the tears on the verge of falling.
âI met one of those sharks, you see. I got attacked and Sammy.. Sammy hasnât.. He isnât.. acting right. I wanted to give him.. good news.. to make it better, so thank you. But.. if youâre his friend ..can ..you..see..if heâs ok? Please? Sammy is sweet...normally.â Â Evelyn fell quiet and took a pen and paper with a sniffle starting to write down her school schedule. âIâm..Iâm sorry.â Evelyn whispered and diverted her gaze down to the paper in front of her.

Evelyn enjoyed people watching but rarely did she eavesdrop on conversations. Usually she could tune out the personâs voice and instead concentrate on just watching the world move around her. Evie was content on being invisible to those around her. Often seeming mundane, except now with her brother acting questionable. It had made her want to turn to an old friend. The substances that were her only acquaintance when Samson had left.
She knew once she tapped into the conversations around her that one day she would get gold. Today was the day when she overheard a passing student conversation as they headed off campus. The name wasnât familiar to her, but it wasnât as if she had met everyone in town yet.Â
Desperation was a new coat for Evie to don. Itâs one she hated to wear because of the weight. There was no other choice she had determined. She hurled herself into the other and apologized meekly as her eyes scanned over the meeting location on the other girlâs phone. Then quickly dispersed away from her classmates. A couple of hours she had beat the other girl to the meeting place.Â
Evelyn took a turn to face the man when she heard the footsteps approach. "Tiffany should be around soon, but I couldnât help myself... I have a desperate need...â to end my sobriety.
