Henrietta Lacks primary and secondary 1
On page 79 of the book we meet Cootie, a relative of Henrietta’s. From the moment he is mentioned in the book he is kind, respectful and all around cooperative. When talking with day or Deborah or any other member of the Lacks family Rebecca is met with harsh tone. Based on earlier descriptions of how the press pursued the family not stop it can be inferred that this is the cause. However cootie throws me off balance. He is not quick to judge or to anger but instead understanding. I am not finding fault with the rest of the Lacks family because they have been treated unfairly in this situation. In my head there are three most likely options as to why Cootie is initially nicer to Rebecca. The first is that Cootie has not seen many reporters or talked to many of them for various different reasons. He would be less annoyed because of this. My second theory is that Cootie is just a man who is slow to anger and quick to forgive. This seems to be a trait he possesses. My final theory is that he enjoys talking to the reporters. He seemed eager and happy to go on and on about the lacks family and Henrietta. Maybe like Rebecca he wants the truth of who she was to be out there. I thought of this a while but until I read further I am uncertain of any future answer. “all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator” - Declaration of independence- I believe this is important when thinking of Henrietta Lacks or anyone people can’t wait to see for whatever reason. People act as though they care about the little parts in someone’s life. When in reality they care about a singular incident oR an exiting event and focus solely on that. Because we are all just people. People always want to focus on the special and gloss over the rest. This is why the lacks family were questioned so many times about Henrietta but with so little publishing about the woman herself. What I mean is we are all created equal yet these reporters feel they must pounce on the Lacks family after they have already suffered. One man makes it on the news with “his” new discovery that is a miracle of nature. While the woman who directly and wholeheartedly made possible for that miracle and paid the ultimate price got no screen time at all. That is a tragedy in itself.
