"Each and every time." 8'x8' mixed-media installation Winter is always the hardest time of the year for me, and spring is always a welcome relief from the cold, dark, dirty days of a downtown SLC winter. Spring washes all that away. Inevitably, the days grow longer and warmer, regardless of how dark and dirty that winter may have been. It's not always easy to remember that dark days won't last, but time presses forward (or at least appears to), and spring will always come. NOTHING LASTS - Part 1: Needing to Disappear In the fall of 2014 I was sitting behind a table covered in my prints and pins and whatnot in the lobby of the Downtown SLC library as part of some event. I didn't want to be there. I was feeling incredibly anxious and self conscious that day (a common occurrence for me). I wanted to be able to just disappear. If I was going to stay, I didn't feel like I could be outgoing and friendly. I needed to just focus on something else, and get through it. The only other things that I had to focus on were my phone and my sketchbook. The thing is though, when I am trying to draw something, I usually need to be able to see it in my mind fully before I'm able to get it down on paper. And sometimes forming that vision can take multiple sketches and drafts, and is usually the slowest, hardest, most sporadic part of a drawing for me. But in this moment in the library, I needed to be able to put my head down, and draw for the next 3-4 hours (I figured if I looked super focused on drawing that most people would just leave me alone). So I put the pen to paper, and I started drawing these squiggles. And I kept going until the paper was full. Finding a way to draw for hours without starting with an idea saved me that day. I was able to disappear. I was pleased with the final drawing, and thought I'd probably try using that sort of pattern again sometime. I didn't realize then that this drawing, and my experience that day would mark the beginning of a new era for me. And all of that doesn't even touch on the actual subject of the drawing, but, in the long-run the subject matter of it is less important to me than my personal experience of actually creating the piece. 2017 has been a momentous year. A difficult one for sure. I've struggled. I've grown. I've rethought some things. Changed some habits. Grew my hair out. I made a whole bunch of new work, which sort of magically made me work through some things. I think I've set myself in a good direction.
