Grace saves his brother (not sure who yet but yeahhh) from a life of pain at the hands of the beast after he steals a rose for him and gets caught

Takes his place, bonds with the PHM crew who are various utensils/wardrobes/tools and all that jazz

BUT THINK ABOUT THIS

Grace only finds out about the curse after the ballroom scene (no one told him because they didn’t know how he’d react) and his heart ultimately breaks because he’d actually been beginning to trust Eva and think oh she’s not that bad and I wouldn’t mind spending my life here

but no she’s lying to him, using him to get her own life back, her own body back. He’s pissed.

he looks at her heartbroken and all she can do is apologise with the most deadpan voice, and emotionless face (perks of the curse she can’t express her emotions well!) and it’s then Grace runs

Runs to save his brother from the village who have done nothing but hate them since their parents died

Leaving Eva with a broken heart full of guilt.

(and it would be up for interpretation wether or not thet get a happy ending or Eva dies or her heartbreak actually overpowered the curse but she still lives alone in her castle because Grace has either fled or won’t see her or she herself can’t bring herself to find him thinking she’ll hurt him again)

everyone gets onto eva stratt for the "think about it long time" vs. "you have three hours" thing but

operating on book canon a little bit: if grace couldn't do it-- if he said no*-- the alternative was to scramble and fly in the next most qualified volunteer, who had 0 training, 0 knowledge of astrophage, and was not an astronaut. three hours could have been three hours of training for that replacement. three hours could have been three hours of preparation for grace, if he said yes

eva stratt gave grace three hours. not to decide, necessarily, because the decision was going to be made the way it was no matter what. but three hours to come to terms with it, to grieve, to mentally prepare himself. three hours that could have been spent giving humanity a better chance to survive

she borrowed three hours that she didn't have to give grace space to process. to get himself together and come to her, teary-eyed but resolved, and say yes.

Because they both volunteered to board the Project Hail Mary to search for a solution to astrophage, they were both willing to die in order to give the rest of humanity a fighting chance of making it.

And they both died before ever even seeing Tau Ceti.

And it feels so unfair, because they went all that way for nothing, they died without even getting to try and save the people they were going for.

So they died for nothing.

Except they DIDN’T.

Because their deaths saved Grace, and in turn, saved Rocky and Erid. Without the surplus coma slurry, Grace wouldn’t have been able to go back and take Rocky home, and Erid would have had a much harder time with astrophage.

This isn’t particularly coherent, but I can’t stop thinking about these two people who were willing to die for their world, died before getting the chance to fight for their species survival, and yet their deaths meant the sole survivor of their crew could save both their home, and another.
