Euphoria Fandom Artefact

So I’ve just finished watching season 2 of this wild show and I NEED to share some of the theories I’ve come across!

Rue is dead

Okay when I first heard this I had no clue what to believe because it actually does sound wild. but we also know that Rue is an insane and, at times, hallucinating drug addict. I think we've all establish the fact that this is going to lead her to her fate right in front of us at some point but what we actually need to discuss is if its actually happened ALREADY.

Shoutout to you smart cookies who worked out the fact that Rue was in the role of dead characters in classics. is she really speaking to us from the grave?

2. Faye the fed? 

We love Faye but we all assume that she is a bit on the slower side. Let’s be real, we can’t just judge by the colour of her hair and the fact she speaks horrifically slowly. 

But judging by the way her intelligence sprung out in that final episode of season 2, could she really be spying on Fez for Mouse’s murder?

3. Fanfic - Maddy and Samantha? 

good things? 

- we love the creativity of today. if we have to thank anyone for how we can communicate as fans in this day it can be whoever created the internet and social media 

- embracing new positivities- we love to see sexuality acceptances, body acceptances, interest acceptances. we can actually not be called geeks or neeks for being fans. we can EXPRESS OURSELVES!

- the escapism - our minds go into theory and fiction mode after we’ve watched an episode of Euphoria. we don’t think about reality and that is completely okay because it’s so great sitting here and hearing the fans’ ideas. 

bad things? 

- I feel as if the audience is quite divided and there is an issue of people younger than 18 watching Euphoria, which is the actual certified age for it. I’m not disagreeing that Euphoria is a cool show (obviously - this is a EUPHORIA blog), but what I am saying is that regulation in this digital age is very inevitable and Euphoria isn’t exactly a show for the young. 

- I came across a blog on Vogue and the writer, Samuel Getachew, spoke about the actual issue with Euphoria itself- the glamourisation, the cause to reenact almost exactly what’s been shown on the show. Euphoria makes these halluncinations and this ideal feeling from a drug seem like its a norm and something we should all do to “be cool”. The aesthetic of Euphoria is pleasing to the eye but isn’t seeing the way Rue behave an eye opener? Bottom line is, drugs are not cool. 

Not exactly the worst thing in terms of communication - I’m all for the online communities being so big and so able to talk about reactions to Euphoria episodes so easily, but I would love to see fan communities maintain the older forms of fandom - like the Comic-con events :)

Let’s have a little theory lesson! 

Digital revolution is the transition of technology from the older electronics to the advanced digital devices we use today (thanks to Techopedia for the definition). Beginning from the 1990s and still continuing now, it has become a huge innovation in the digital age and that’s why we are enjoying technology, internet, and all the social medias we can think of. We have the luxury of expressing ourselves through this technology.

There was actual fandom before the digital revolution and this mainly involved the analogue forms of media. As this is involved personal and face-to-face experiences, fans had to be more devoted in their knowledge, otherwise there would often be a “weaker relationship” within a community (mentioned in Daniel Cavicchi’s blog on “Fandom Before The Internet”) if not all were on the same level as fan-crazy as we love to be. However, what I do envy about the traditional fan forms is the conventions, performances and the physical magazines- you know, the stuff that makes up a hardcore fan’s collection. It’s not completely extinct but I feel that, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic, everything’s online now. And as convenient as it is, I would love to go to an actual dedicated Euphoria convention. 

Ever since we’ve had this digital revolution, it’s actually allowed us to become  prosumers and that, my friends, is a producer and consumer. This is thanks to the digital media that actually helps us fans contribute to new media being produced and I think that's fascinating. How have we, as fans, become so powerful enough to now have our voice expressed, listened to, and actually taken into consideration for new media products.
