“올해 82살인데, 젊을 때 건축을 했어. 많이 하진 않았고, 평생 집을 딱 3개 지었지.” “어떤 건물이었나요?” “을지로에 있는 롯데호텔, 여의도의 63빌딩, 강변의 테크노마트.” “네?” “그 세 개 집을 짓는데 건축 본부장으로 있었어. 설계도 하고, 시공사를 뽑고, 건축 허가를 받고, 감독을 했지. 서울시를 설득하기 위해 이 건물이 지어지면 교통에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석을 하기도 했고. 엄청 고생스러웠지. 건물 하나 짓기 위해서 해야할 일이 너무나도 많았어.” “세 건물 모두 서울의 상징적인 건물이잖아요.” “그렇게 지은 건물이 랜드마크가 되고, 외신에 소개되고, 도시의 흐름이 바뀌는 걸 보면서 무척 기뻤지. 그만한 보람이 없었어. 하지만 이젠 다 옛날 일이지. 이제는 63빌딩보다 롯데타워가 서울의 랜드마크가 되었잖아. 이젠 그 앞을 지나갈 일도 거의 없어.” “요즘은 어떤 일을 하세요?” “정말이지 할 일이 없어. 몇 년 전부터는 더이상 언론 인터뷰나 자문 요청도 오지 않으니까. 무료한게 가장 큰 고민이 될 줄은 상상을 못 했는데 말이야. 다행히 오늘은 미술 수업에 가는 날이었어. 일주일 중 가장 좋아하는 날이지. 내가 건축을 시작하게 된 것도 꼬마일 적부터 그림 그리는 걸 좋아해서였거든.”

Today we have yet another opinion piece about modernized hanbok with a tangential discussion about teenage fashion at the end. I would say this is a bit of a harder text, but the writer gives an interesting perspective on the whole thing.

드레스처럼 부풀리거나 짧은 치마, 금박이나 레이스, 리본 장식. 이런 퓨전 한복을 입으면 더 이상 고궁 무료입장을 허용하지 않겠다는 서울 종로구청의 방침이 계속 논란이 되고 있다. 종로구청은 이달 초 국적 불명 한복의 전통 파괴를 우려하며 문화재청에 ‘한복 무료관람 가이드라인’ 변경을 요청하겠다고 밝혔다. 2013년 도입된 ‘한복 착장 고궁 무료입장’ 제도는 한복 대중화에 크게 기여한 것으로 평가된다. 지난해 한복을 입고 고궁을 찾은 이가 63만명이다.

부풀이다 - exaggerate, (formal) overstate

여론은 양분됐다. ‘꼰대 발상’‘전통 수호’가 맞섰다. 김영종 종로구청장은 24일 인터뷰를 통해 “그런 옷을 입지 말라는 것이 아니다. 그걸 한복이라고 부르지 말라는 얘기”라고 못 박았다. 이에 앞서 17일 서울시 산하 서울디자인재단이 주최한 ‘궁 나들이’ 패션쇼에는 패션 전공 대학생 100여명이 현대적으로 재해석한 퓨전 한복들이 대거 선보였다. 문제가 된 리본, 레이스 장식이 등장했다. 전통 대 퓨전을 놓고 종로구청과 서울시의 입장이 묘하게 엇갈렸다. 

양분되다 - 둘로 갈리거나 나뉘다. 

수호 - 지키고 보호함. protect

엇갈리다 - 모순적인 여러 가지 것이 서로 겹치거나 스치다. 

Today’s article is about how living arrangements are changing in Korea. The article is a bit long and contains a lot of money related vocabulary –words that for some reason I keep forgetting. I’ve been getting more into the whole savings & money adulting thing these days so hopefully as these things become more important to me I’ll have an easier time remembering. 

1인 가구의 거주지 점유 형태가 ‘자기 집’에서 ‘보증금 있는 월세’로 변화한 것으로 나타났다. 집값 상승과 저금리 기조로 인해 주택 시장 전반에 걸쳐 월세 수요가 늘어난 게 1인 가구에도 영향을 미친 것으로 풀이된다.

점유 - occupation, occupy

저금리 기조 - low interest (rate) trend

수요 - demand

통계청이 28일 발표한 ‘인구주택총조사에 나타난 1인가구의 현황 및 특성’에 따르면 1인 가구의 거주지 점유 형태 중 보증금 있는 월세는 2000년 21.2%에서 2015년 36.0%로 14.8%포인트 증가했다. 같은 기간 9.6%포인트 증가한 일반가구의 보증금 있는 월세 비중보다 증가폭이 훨씬 컸다.

비중 - 다른 것과 비교할 때 차지하는 중요도. gravity, weight

이에 따라 1인 가구의 주된 거주지 점유형태는 2010년 이후로 자기 집에서 보증금 있는 월세로 역전됐다. 2000년만 하더라도 1인 가구 중 거주지 점유형태가 자기 집인 비율은 32.1%로 보증금 있는 월세(21.2%)보다 10.9%포인트 높았다. 하지만 2010년에는 보증금있는 월세가 34.4%로 자기 집(31.9%)을 넘어섰다. 전세 비중도 2000년 30.0%에서 2015년 16.0%로 크게 줄었다.

통계청 관계자는 “집값이 꾸준히 상승하고 저금리 기조가 유지되면서 전체 주택시장에서 월세의 비중이 늘어난 추세를 따라 1인 가구의 거주지 점유형태도 자가 보유에서 월세로 전환하는 것으로 보인다"고 설명했다.

자가 - one’s own house

보유 - possession

Used to explain or emphasize an action which is made to be the main conversation topic. 

There are a few second clauses that are used very often; 쉬운 일이 아니에요, 힘든 일이에요/힘들어요, 보통 일이 아니에요.

It should describe a situation that is generally agreed upon by people; hence rather than providing specific details it should focus on the general situation. I.e rather than saying donating 1 million dollars is hard, you simply say donating a large amount of money is hard.   

~기란 attached directly to the verb stem.

 큰 돈을 기부하기란 쉬운 일이 아니에요.

외국에서 혼자 살기란 힘든 일이에요.

아이를 키우기란 보통 일이 아니에요.

직업을 바뀌기란 보통 일이 아니에요.

가: 수업 끝나고 아르바이트도 해야 하고요.

It is used when although there are a variety of opinions held by people, you are picking the one that you personally believe.

Used when wondering to oneself. An answer is not expected. Sometimes just ~려나 sometimes ~ㄹ려나, interchangeable depending on pronunciation.

VERB STEM + 게끔

“In order to do…” “So that…”

Used in the same way as ~게, but emphasizes that care goes into the action. This means it’s used more often in planning situations than casual situations, while ~게 is used often in either.

EDIT: Got a note from bbalgangyi that I want to include: ~게 is also shorter and easier to say than ~게끔, making it more frequently used.

그녀가 알아듣게끔 똑똑히 이야기해라.

Speak clearly so that she understands you

그는 늦지 않게끔 서둘렀다.

He hurried up so as not to be late.

Sometimes interchangeable with ~도록, except when ~도록 is used to mean “to the point/extent where” or “until (a result)”. Examples of when they are and aren’t interchangeable:

     ✓ 영희는 목이 쉬도록 소리를 질렀어요.           Younghee screamed until her throat became hoarse.      X 영희는 목이 쉬게끔 소리를 질렀어요.          Younghee screamed so that her throat would become hoarse.

     ✓ 죽도록 사랑한다.          I love you to death.      X 죽게끔 사랑한다.          I love you in order to die.

     ✓ 춥지 않도록 두꺼운 옷을 입으세요.      ✓ 춥지 않게끔 두꺼운 옷을 입으세요.          Please wear thick clothes so that you’re not cold.

     ✓ 철수는 존이 한국말을 빨리 배울 수 있도록 도와주었어요.      ✓ 철수는 존이 한국말을 빨리 배울 수 있게끔 도와주었어요.          Cheolsu helped so that John quickly learned Korean.
