white privilege does not mean that your life is easy. it doesn’t mean that you have never suffered, or that you’re wealthy, or that everything in your life has been given to you on a silver platter. it means that the colour of your skin will always afford you certain advantages, no matter your situation. these advantages are not always obvious because we don’t often have to think about them, but they include the absence of institutional racism, racial profiling, and racial police brutality. no matter how bad our circumstances become, as white people, we are protected from these things: this is white privilege. having white privilege does not make you a bad person and acknowledging white privilege is not racist. in fact, acknowledging privilege allows us to become better allies and to better recognise injustice when we see it. don’t turn away because you can’t reconcile your struggles with the word ‘privilege’, and don’t stop listening when you hear the word ‘white’ just because you aren’t used to being defined by your race, because once again, you are not discounting your struggles in life by acknowledging the privileges you have. but recognising them is so important and speaking out against the injustice of that privilege is our moral obligation as an advantaged group, because black lives matter more than our discomfort
