          positioned  at  the  end  of  the  pick  -  up  counter,  aoife  tries  to  hide  the  impatient  shifting  of  her  weight  that’s  meant  to  hide  the  growl  of  her  stomach.  all  she  can  think  about  it  how  excited  she’d  been  to  leave  class  for  her  pasta,  which  is  perhaps  what  prompts  her  otherwise  unprompted  question  to  the  nearest  party.  or  her  inability  to  handle  the  silence.  both  seemed  entirely  feasible.     ❝  so  tell  me,  what’s  your  noodle  of  choice  ?  ❞     it’s  accompanied  with  an  absent  raise  of  her  hand  towards  the  menu,  the  same  way  her  brow  raises  expectantly.     ❝  and  don’t  worry,  there  is  a  correct  answer  and  you  can  get  it  wrong.  ❞

          a  collection  of  appropriate  answers  cycle  through  her  head,  any  number  of  which  were  true.  artist.  professor.  musician.  actually,  scratch  that.  she  learned  pretty  quickly  she  didn’t  have  a  musical  bone  in  her  body.  art  collector  (  it  sounded  better  than  art  thief,  which  was  arguably  more  fun  ).  happy.  happy,  happy,  happy.  loved.  safe.  but  she’d  never  say  all  that,  so  instead  she  offers  a  shrug.     ❝  a  lot  of  things,  i  guess.  but  i  mostly  just  wanted  to  be  an  adult.  ❞

          ❝  knowing  me  comes  with  a  price,  ❞     she  answers  with  a  cheeky  smile,  arms  folding  pointedly  over  her  chest.     ❝  and  unfortunately  for  you,  i  don’t  plan  on  giving  it  back.  is  that  such  a  bad  thing,  though  ?  i  take  pretty  good  care  of  the  hearts  i  hold  onto.  ❞

          it’s  a  valid  question,  of  course.  one  she  rarely  puts  much  thought  into  unless  she’s  asked,  like  moments  such  as  these.  there’s  a  quiet  hum  that  fills  the  silence  before  she  speaks.     ❝  my  siblings,  most  of  the  time,  giulia,  all  of  the  time,  and  when  a  bag  of  sour  gummy  worms  has  more  pink  &  blue  ones  than  all  the  others.  i  guess  capturing  the  perfect  moment  in  a  picture  is  on  that  list,  too.  i  like  nice  memories.  ❞

          ❝  like,  the  zombie  apocalypse  ?  ❞     she  can’t  help  wonder  if  they  were  being  serious,  if  they  had  genuine  concerns  about  her  ability  to  survive  the  dead.     ❝  i  mean,  step  one’s  to  not  be  a  total  dumbass,  innit  ?  and  they’re  slow,  right  ?  so  i’d  have  speed  on  my  side,  thanks  dad.  i’d  just  do  what  i  do  best:  steal  supplies,  make  a  camp  on  a  roof,  use  a  proper  feckin’  door  barricade.  they’re  dead,  not  superhuman.  ❞

          ❝  an  alliance,  you  say  ?  ❞     though  her  brow  is  raised  in  intrigue,  there’s  a  hint  of  a  smile  that  plays  at  the  corner  of  her  lips.     ❝  and  what  do  you  suppose  we  ally  over,  not  axel  ?  name  the  circumstances,  i’m  sure  we  could  make  it  work.  besides,  i  don’t  need  you  to  think  i’m  super  cool  to  know  that  i  am,  so,  no  worries  there.  ❞

          ❝  any  butchered  pronunciation of my name,  ❞     aoife  answered  with  a  roll  of  her  eyes,  though  expression  softens  just  slightly.     ❝  or  my  name  but  instead  it’s  pronounced like  wall-e  does  eve’s.  and  lucky  calls  me  aioli,  don’t  ask.  ❞

          ❝  oh,  man,  that’s  a  long  history  to  sift  through,  ❞     and  aoife  tilts  her  head  back  and  forth  in  consideration.     ❝  in  terms  of  size,  i  guess  probably  a  motorcycle  in  venice,  but  in  my  defense,  the  keys  were  in  it  and  i  thought  it  was  mine.  blasted  things  all  looked  the  same.  valuable’s  in  the  eye  of  the  beholder  and  all  that,  but  literally  speaking,  i  managed  to  snag  a  pair  of  jacob  &  co.  cufflinks  from  a  man  that  loved  to  talk  about  himself  too  much  at  the  bar.  it  was  a  pretty  good  payout.  i  considered  the  mona  lisa,  once,  but  that’s  probably  a  pipe  dream.  really  nice  piece,  though.  ❞

          ❝  i  think  i’d  be  a  completely  different  person  if  it  wasn’t  hermes,  so  it’s  a  bit  hard  to  say.  probably  athena,  maybe  ares  ?  in  terms  of  who  could  be  fun  to  have,  on  the  other  hand,  dionysus  or  zeus,  for  sure.  there’s  something  appealing  about  summoning  a  strong  drink  on  a  whim  and  giving  people  a  little  zap.  ❞     her  shoulders  rise  and  fall  in  a  shrug.     ❝  who  knows,  i’ve  always  been  a  bit  too  much  of  a  handful  for  most  people.  ❞

              “  not  so  fast,  ”  she  calls  out,  rounding  the  corner  with  a  sly  sort  of  smile  curling  upward.  her  gaze  flicks  from  her  target,  to  the  crops  they  linger  by,  and  back  to  them  once  more.  “  you  were  thinking  about  it,  weren’t  you  ?  picking  without  permission.  tsk  tsk.  ”  of  course,  she’s  the  last  who  would  ever  care  about  breaking  the  rules  —  but  it’s  fun  to  play  with  her  prey  like  this.  “  what’s  stopping  you,  then  ?  because  i’d  be  willing  to  turn  the  other  cheek …  ”  

          her  nose  crinkles  at  the  familiar  voice,  albeit  with  a  warm  smile  already  poised  on  her  lips.     ❝  speed’s  kinda  an  inherited  thing,  ❞     aoife  teased  easily  in  return,  fingers  falling  from  around  the  rose  stem  they’d  been  grasping  just  seconds  before.     ❝  are  you  going  to  rally  your  siblings  and  smite  me  ?  could  be  a  fun  bonding  activity  ?  for  the  shrubs  and  all  that.  ❞     facing  giulia  with  a  raise  of  her  brow,  her  arms  fold  across  her  chest.     ❝  technically  ...  this  conversation.  generally  ...  being  caught.  we  both  know  if  you  turned  the  other  cheek,  i’d  have  to  pick  an  extra  just  for  you,  which  is  fine,  i’ll  risk  the  wraith.  or  you  could  just  come  sit  over  here  like  a  good  friend.  ❞
