Right up until Ellie leans into Eadwulf’s face and chomps on his ear. “Ow!” Eadwulf shouts as he tries to pull Ellie away, but she doesn’t let go of the ear and Essek, springing quickly into action, has to pry her mouth open. When he does, Ellie bites down on Essek’s finger instead and he lets her. “Lovelight, no,” Essek scolds as Ellie, still held by Eadwulf, chews on his finger. Her fangs seem to have no effect on him. “No biting Papa.” Papa? “Are you alright?” Caleb asks. “Ja,” Eadwulf says, even though when he touches his ear, his fingers come back bloody. “Whatever makes her happy…” “Biting makes her happy?” “It’s morultahin,” Essek explains, “it’s an offering between parent and child.” He teases, “Unless you have weak, human skin.” Eadwulf rolls his eyes like he’s heard this before, like they’ve had this conversation before, like, “Yes, Essek, I know, you’ve told me, I agreed with you the last time.” But all he says is, “So, ja, biting makes her happy.”
