Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein), is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace. It was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. The palace was intended as a personal refuge but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his suspicious death in 1886. Since then more than 65 million people have visited the palace. It has appeared prominently in several movies and was the main inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
